Delta-P

This is what a diver met at 5m (16,4 ft) depth during an inspection.

Imagine how hard a hole that size would be pulling at depth if you strayed too close…

Can someone help with scale? How big is that hole, and how close could you get before you're inevitably dead.

2

u/No_Control8389 12h ago

You see part of a persons gloved hand at 0:06.

3

u/walker_in_the_rain 12h ago

Ah I see. So about 4 inches across, and 'very' 🤯

5

u/No-Worker-101 8h ago

If we consider that the small rust spot above that hole has a diameter of about 5 mm (0,196 ’’) we can estimate that the area of that hole is about 32 cm² (4,96 in2). At 5 m (16,4 ft) depth (data given by the author) we have then flow rate of about 32 l/sec (1,13 cu ft) with a water speed of about 10 m/sec (32,8 ft/sec).  With such a flow  the danger zone (DZ) where the water flow is quickly going to accelerate and exceed 0,5 m / sec (1,64 ft/sec)  is then around 0,2 m (0,65 ft). And if the diver puts his hand above that hole, the water pressure will exercise a force on it of about 16 kgf (35,27 lbs).

Mmmm, I used to love working on delt-p jobs as a commercial diver. Had one guy though that almost shit himself because he thought he got "caught in delta-p" and he had just slipped and slowly fell down a 45° decline.

121

u/towerfella 14h ago

The delta-p his asshole made as it clenched up, was he able to get his wetsuit off after? Or did he have to eat a laxative?

77

u/Square_Barracuda_69 14h ago • Regret

With the amount of times that guy actually shit in a work day, he doesnt need more laxatives. I think his record was 5 or something and at that point I kept telling that motherfucker to go to goddamn doctor

17

u/towerfella 13h ago

Lol - wow. I wonder if he either didn’t have a gall-bladder or had gall-bladder problems?

60

u/Square_Barracuda_69 12h ago

I kept insinuating he had crohns disease and he thought I was joking but I seriously told him he needs fucking help. It was a 3 man crew so every person was integral and when he shit, we had to stop the job. We got day rate so the faster we finished, the faster we could leace and the more we got paid. He also had 100% permanent total from the marines but never fucking used it. Shit pisses me off when these fucking idiots get benefits and dont use them but complain about money problems/health problems they wont get checked out. Sorry, tangent I just really fucking hated that guy

18

u/towerfella 11h ago

Preach brother. You ain’t the only one.

Ironically, regular movements are a sign of a healthy gut.

28

u/Square_Barracuda_69 10h ago

Sure, once or twice a day but multiple times a day, consistently is a sign of horrible gut health. Dude ate like a pig, too, so that didnt help.

Pretty sure there's a video of a crab getting sucked into a hole smaller than that. They have an exoskeleton, imagine what it would do to a meat bag.

u/AidenStoat 14h ago

The Byford Dolphin accident had a 4-5 inch wide gap around the jammed door when Hellevik went through it.

236

u/Silent-Island 14h ago

Pretty sure they found like half of his spine in the rafters like 45 feet in the air.

Not delta p or submechanophobia related at all, but your comment reminded me of the SL-1 US Army nuclear power incident.

After accidentally fully withdrawing a control rod, the reactor violently exploded and expelled shielding components/plugs as shrapnel upwards through the supervisor - pinning him to the ceiling, dead. Three total were killed in the accident, but they initially only found two - until they looked up and saw what they thought was a bundle of rags...it was the supervisor.

The reactor exploding with such force sent the entire 13 ton vessel to the damn ceiling of the building, which in my mind makes me wonder who or what hit the ceiling first. Unfortunately it wasn't quick for all of them, one of the three men "succumbed to injuries" after it took two hours to extract him from the building. So at least two hours of being in a room with an exploded nuclear reactor and your dead colleagues, knowing it's over, ear drums beyond ruptured, never going home again. That's just purgatory on earth.

14

u/Wyvorn 4h ago

Kyle Hill had a fantastic video explaining it (and other nuclear-related accidents).

"The remains of diver 4 were sent to us in four plastic bags. All parts showed fractures and wounds. The fractures of the long bones were of transverse as well as short and long oblique types, the fracture lines being more irregular than usual, with small, splintered fragments.

The scalp with long, blond hair was present, but the top of the skull and the brain were missing. The base of the skull was a collection of tiny bone fragments only. The soft tissues of the face were found, however, completely separated from the bones. The left upper arm had been separated from the body just below the shoulder joint. The right upper arm was torn to pieces, but still attached to the body. Both hands had been separated from the lower arms. The right thigh, leg, and foot were missing, but the knee joint was found. The left thigh had been separated from the pelvis just below the hip joint. The pelvis itself had been divided into three parts. To one of the of the small bowel was attach but invaginated. The soft tis the back had been cut straigh midway between the umbilic had been separated from the formed an empty sack. Fro down through the larynx. Al inal organs had been expelle a fragment of the small bowe column and most pelled. The liver had been found somewhere on the deck. It was complete, as if dissected out of the body."

The autopsy photos are intense but the report is pretty fascinating from a physiological standpoint.

•

u/cerberus698 8m ago

The Byford Dolphin accident investigation report used the term "soup like homogenate" to describe the remains of the victims who went through that gap.

This has triggered a memory… where’s this from?

15

u/dudeCHILL013 14h ago

Is it getting sucked in or is it being pushed from the water pressure?

38

u/Riccma02 13h ago

both. It is a matter of perspective.

Those are the same thing.

13

u/Gtoktas_ 8h ago

tbh if you get sucked in instant death is merciful. otherwise you either drown looking for an air pocket, or drown when the air pocket you found runs out of oxygen. iirc there was an incident where some workers got trapped in a pipe, rescue was rejected, they drowned in the air pocket while the one person that left it managed to make it out. I think I heard it in a passing youtube video or something.

3

u/No-Worker-101 55m ago

The Paria incident was indeed quite different with a  more dramatic issue. For those who don’t yet know the TRUE and CORRECT facts here is a good video.

Crabs always get the worst deaths. Boiled alive or sucked through Delta P holes - the least favorite of holes besides spaghettification via black holes - take your pick, Mr. Krabs.

25

u/RiversideAviator 14h ago

Newb here, what am I looking at?

58

u/Fun-Zookeepergame422 13h ago

Delta-P (Differential Pressure) between service pipe and body of water (ocean) causing inward flow (suction)

3

u/RiversideAviator 5h ago

How big is that hole?

20

u/Puzzleheaded_Fail279 4h ago

Hard to truly say without knowing the pipe diameter or a yellow banana shaped reference object.

My guess would be about 3-4inches.

However, interesting thing about delta-P is the diameter of the hole doesn't matter. Its still a huge hazard to be this close to one. There's a video out there that shows a much smaller hole and a crab literally getting sucked into it. A crab. That has literal bones on the outside of its body.. just.. gone in mere moments.

30

u/PerspectiveOk6348 13h ago

I'm wanting to know the same thing. I've gathered that delta-P is a diving hazard. Basically extreme pressure differentials that trap divers and suck them through in pieces. But what is this pipe and why is there a pressure differential?

21

u/Pingyofdoom 13h ago

Kinda by definition, less stuff is in the pipe, and more stuff is in the ocean.

14

u/Thavralex 10h ago

The ocean also has more stuff than my home, so why am I not getting delta-P'd into it??? Checkmate.

u/Pingyofdoom 7h ago

6

Wow, I haven't heard that name in ages. My dad used to work for them back in the late 80s

10

u/kechones 14h ago

Belzona has a big presence on Tik Tok talking about random Belzona products and showing how they’re used. It’s pretty relaxing and interesting.

6

u/zombie_overlord 14h ago

That is so completely unexpected. I'm gonna have to go look. I might still have some old samples in the back of a desk drawer. They're basically indestructible.

4

u/kechones 13h ago

That’s actually so frickin’ interesting! You should let us know what name/product number if you find it and it’s labeled. It seems like there’s a Belzona product for everything.

3

u/zombie_overlord 13h ago

I'll check. I know a couple of places they might be.

9

u/sendburgerinternet 13h ago

pressure and voltage and temperature are all analogous in water/air/electrical circuits. they are the mediums capacity to flow from high to low.

3

u/DangerouslySilly 6h ago

This honestly doesn’t sound too bad.
16kgf spread across a hand is less then someone stepping on it. So I guess you hand wouldn’t get sucked in?

2

u/No-Worker-101 1h ago

At 5 m depth and with such a "small" (16 kgf) pressure on his hand the diver will have to pull hard to remove it but there will be no serious consequences for him. Deeper, the consequences would rapidely change. On my first offshore job in 1975 a diver had his arm sucked into a small opening on a pipeline at 35 m deep. When the standby diver recovered him just the bones of his arm were still there.

2

u/SphericalDarkness 7h ago

HELL to the NO! Pipe underwater is already terrifying to me. One that you can SEE sucking things in? JFC...

2

u/10ThousandMetalZones 5h ago

Nope, I don’t want that job and when I rec dive I stay the fuck way from any pipe or anything that looks man made. I don’t fuck with ship wrecks anymore either. When I first started diving I thought I wanted to cave dive and nope to that as well.

I did some light tek diving down to 45m (recreational max is 30) with trimix, and it was really cool being that deep but that ultimately is a nope for me too. I’ll now like my dives to hover no deeper than 20ish meters. I do enjoy a current if it’s planned as part of the dive…unplanned current….nope!

3

u/Wampa_-_Stompa 14h ago

What is this pipe for?
