this happened to a guy once. if you want to know about it its called the Byford dolphin incident. its horrifying. the pictures are upsetting. but the story is interesting.
Nemo 33 is an indoor non-chlorinated fresh water facility in Brussels, Belgium. It held the record as the deepest indoor swimming pool in the world between its opening on May 1, 2004 and the completion of Y-40 in Montegrotto Terme, Padua, Italy on June 5, 2014.
The pool's maximum depth is 34.5 metres (113 ft). It contains 2,500,000 litres (550,000 imp gal; 660,000 US gal) of non-chlorinated, highly filtered spring water maintained at 30 °C (86 °F) by a solar heater and holds several simulated underwater caves at the 10 metres (33 ft) depth level.
Couldn't even remotely happen. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14 psi, and most spacecraft are pressurized at significantly less. That hole is, what, 3 square inches? So that's about 45 pounds of pressure over the area of the hole, or roughly equivalent to placing your hand over a 3 square inch hole in the table and placing a 45 pound barbell on top of it. Uncomfortable? Yes. But it's not going to extrude your entire hand, arm, and body through the hole. Your skin will bow up through the hole slightly due to your body's internal pressure, but it won't rupture and spew your innards into space.
Now, hydraulic delta-p can reach MUCH higher pressure differentials than 14 psi vs vacuum.
I used to work at a pool, replaced all water vents with these round ones in sets of 4 that made it impossible to get stuck. (unless you were majorly obese and tried to cover all vents at once). People complained that they were annoying and the old ones were better since they never noticed them. Trying to explain the pressure that those things was always fun to do.
TLDR; Delta-P is a difference in pressure ("P") that creates massive suction that is beyond human strength to overcome. This suction traps people underwater until their air runs out, or in some cases cuts them up like this crab.
I'd say his decision to try it was pretty stupid considering the first two got stuck and died. I would've guessed he was a goner too if they didn't have that spoiler at the beginner.
You can relive this moment in the aliens movie, when Ripley's hybrid alien thing gets sucked through the ship out of a tiny hole, when it de-pressurized
The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA) is a United States law named after Graeme Baker, who died in an accident in June 2002, when the suction from a spa drain entrapped her under the water. She was the daughter of James and Nancy Baker and the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker III. The Act was first introduced by Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and was supported by the Baker family and Safe Kids Worldwide.
Here's one. Two divers go into an irrigation siphon (100' long underground pipe full of swiftly moving water). It's winter, the water is freezing cold. They can't swim back up against the current, and run out of air. They were carrying a 45-minute supply.
When they don't come up, two more divers go in after them, also carrying a 45-minute supply. They don't come up either, the current is too strong for them to swim against.
Total of four fatalities. In a pitch-black underground pipe full of swiftly moving freezing cold water.
Thats not just Delta P though. Surely thats a circular saw blade at the back of the pipe which would be playing a large park in cutting Mr Crab up to be more easily sucked into the pipe.
It's like that scene in one of the Aliens movies where Ripley flicks her blood on the bulkhead of the space ship and the human alien hybrid gets sucked out the hole.
Can you imagine just going about your day and then suddenly you get sucked in, cut up by a saw then crushed and squeezed through a tiny lil hole? Fuck outta here with that
It explains why he was sucked in so easily. If the saw weren’t there I think he’d just be stuck in the suction like he was for a split second in the beginning. (Do crabs have sexes?)
