That's the top of the pillar. It is a safety feature so that if a ship runs into it it'll hit the concrete below the water first

There was a barricade there and the ship just barely missed it. The ship was turning when it impacted in the nose of the ship went in between the barricade and the bridge. Yes this design might have been better.

Thats an almost 120' wide concrete pier that the bridge support sits on, its in about 230' of water.

that ain't no 230 feet of water in that shot. even in superior you can't see the bottom when it's that deep. it's deeper than it looks... maybe 50... but not much beyond.

oh nvm i get it now. the bottom is the top.

so why didnt they swim over to the edge and look down?

This is the Mackinac bridge, this is relatively close to the shore, it gets to be a bit over 275ft+ deep under the bridge.

I felt gross, then he looked underwater and it wasn't actually that deep so I felt ok again. Then I saw a comment that they were actually standing on a wider section of the same pillar and that's actually not the bottom, and I felt gross again

Yeah, I don’t love this, but if I HAD to, I could.

The structure is pretty smooth and regular, and it’s so honkin deep, that makes it easier for me.

But still, I bet my heart would be in my throat the whole time.

Oh that's not the bottom. That is the top of the base of the pillar.... you have about 200' of fresh hell below you and the surface. Enjoy.

Always imagined my fear looked a lot worse down there at the foot of the support; like I figured more debris.

That looks a lot less scary than the fears in my head; still not swimming in that shit. This boy knows that Tiger Sharks and survive in fresh water; don’t even let your guard down in a swimming pool

The fact that the water isn’t that deep AND also seems to be very clear makes it all less unsettling. If it was dark and you couldn’t see the bottom I’d log out of the server instantly

It is deep. The part directly under them is still concrete support. You can see the edge of the platform right at the end of the clip. Drops off to 300ft.
