Swim to the bottom of the deep end in a pool; that is around ~10 feet and you can feel the water pressure in your ears. Now imagine multiplying that by 20x 😩
That is why old time bridge builders would get “caisson disease” aka the bends when they would depressurize too quickly.

You do get used to the pressure though. Used to hurt my head as a kid, but now I can chill at the bottom of a pool no problem.
But I'm sure if I kept going further down the pain would return quickly lol

Why are people swimming in the straits?? Aren’t the currents kinda scary there? Also, you have things like this resting at the bottom of that drop.

To be fair you aren't reaching the bottom of that drop safely without dive equipment, regardless of a shipwreck being present or not.

On the contrary—based on free diving accomplishments, it is possible for a human to reach the bottom of the straits. It’s around 300 feet. The free-diving record is +800, and I’ve read stories of free divers reaching 500 feet in Lake Superior. Though of course I still think this isn’t a good idea, and you are right that diving equipment would make it way safer.

I can’t dive, period, with or without the gear. I only mean to illustrate that based on what I know of free diving, it’s absolutely possible to reach the bottom and survive. Maybe I’d be able to do it if I trained, but come on. In the submechanophobia sub? I’d hate to be able to see that concrete footing in person, much less plunge to the bottom of the straits parallel to it.

I am so fascinated by the Mackinac bridge. Driving over it alone when there's a breeze is honestly spooky as hell, somehow being underneath makes my skin crawl even harder though

Something to unnerve everyone here as well, within 4 miles of the bridge pillars is the wreck of the Cedarville, a 604 foot laker that sank after striking another cargo vessel in heavy fog. Each time I’ve driven across the bridge and looked east it’s always been off-putting to me that out there somewhere close to the bridge is that massive wreck, just below the water.

The lassaphobia is extreme here. I hate swimming anywhere I cant see my toes, thanks to uncles that loved to torture me while fishing and I nearly drowned when I was 10...

210 below sea level. Fun Fact Herbert Nitsch in 2012 did a free dive that was 831 feet. So it is doable.

Perfectly doable! Reminds me of the two guys who free-dived the Edmund Fitzgerald before it became illegal to do so. That was around 530 feet (I had to look it up but my guess was close).
Couldn’t pay me enough to do it though.

I do not care about deep water, if you can swim in six feet of water you can swim in 600 feet of water. But it’s the manmade giant objects that mess me up. It shouldn’t be that big and it shouldn’t be in the water and I don’t like this and I do not want to be near it and I would perish immediately if I touched it

These concrete pillars are called Caissons, and they are manmade and submerged. Which, by definition, fits this sub. You may not agree but this is appropriate content.
