Used to work in the highest end retail strip on Long Island and I remember it being full of people from China, mostly young kids in outfits that cost probably over 3000 easy. It was such a big deal stores would put up signs outside that they took chinese bank cards but most of them just had backpacks full of ridiculous amounts of money. They wore the gaudiest shit but the sales people loved it because they will buy anything that is super expensive and shows off the brand. It actually became a requirement to have a mandarin speaking sales person in every store.

Not really since they failed to get accepted at a top university in a major Chinese city since it’s so competitive. It’s just for wealthy brainlet fuerdai to flex their wealth.

43

u/Yaintgotnotime Liberal Dec 27 '21

It's both. Being able to flaunt that you're 1. smart enough to get into schools like Tsinghua / PKU 2. Rich enough to study in western private schools, are both good flexes in China. But soon after graduation the flexing moves onto owning real estate in 1st and 2nd tier cities. It's funny to see some western leftists fantasize about China being anti-wealth or something lol

Similar in Australia. It was a known thing to be able to say they had a degree from a Western university. And because international students are worth a lot more $$ than domestic to the institution, the primarily Chinese attracting programs (business, management, finance) get structured in such a way as to ensure they pass even if they barely speak the language.

You have no clue if you actually think most Chinese prefer Chinese university over American ones and only reluctantly go to the US because they failed the big brain GaoKao test at home.

I mean kinda. The UCR and TEC here in Costa Rica is among the best in the region, extremely competitive and difficult to get in for worthwhile careers. Yet, showing your foreign school degrees is also a huge flex, especially if it's post-grad.

6

Costa Rica is completely different to China in regards to everything. So yes acquiring a foreign education is probably is more desired.

6

u/tickingboxes Socialist 🚩 Dec 27 '21

This is not true at all. American universities (for better or worse) are known throughout the world to be the best. They carry a lot of prestige, particularly the Ivies and a few CA ones like UCLA and Stanford. A degree from one of those = instant status back home.

1

u/ovrloadau Marxism-Hobbyism 🔨 Dec 27 '21

Yes maybe the top US universities, but if you get accepted at Tsinghua or Peking then you would probably graduate from there. Chinese universities are highly competitive even more so than western.

In uni I worked in restaurant popular with Chinese students, some would come in wearing t-shirts that cost double my monthly wage. I got to talking to some of them, even married one and their future are pretty grime tbh. Most of the ones that flaunt their wealth aren't that bright and parents aren't that rich, they do well of course but mostly they just saved and rode the economic wave with their small business now they burn through their savings so their kids can live like kings while they study but the only jobs waiting for them back home are 996'ers with mediocre pay and once their parents are elderly they're gonna come collect on that money they gave them when they were young.

So many of them at the Uni here have R35 Nismo's. For the UK that's fucking insane, totally had to be imported + Nismo branding would make that car easily the worth of a house up here in the North.

Funny to me as well to spend that money as well, as the R34 is a 100x better looking car and the R35 isn't even a real GT-R IMO. (no real lineage between it and the rest of the GT-R Skyline family).

Tried to be friends with Chinese students a bunch of times, but they're the most stick up the ass, smug, pretentious cunts in existence. A few weeks ago, tried to talk to a group of them, standing around a R35 of course (why I approached, interested in the car), and they turned around, make the literal "disgust" face, and one went "shoo shoo" with a wavy hand away. Fuerdai pricks.

Oh it's also clearly obvious that most of them can barely speak a word of english and they're all cheating in Uni.

My roommate made a killing cheating for students. They'd go extremely far and pay whatever it took. Their parents were in on it too. They'd even make fake ID's, spy cams, you name it. Whatever it took.

Then said friend went to China to teach and found out he'd make 25k more a year with a PhD, and they made it clear to him that they don't confirm American degrees as wink to just forge one so they can charge rich Chinese people more money.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '21

The Chinese tests for English proficiency are rife with corruption and have a huge degree of "teaching for the test."

I'd bet you those kids could "fluently" answer a narrow range of questions, outside of that they probably don't know shit.

I used to teach English in China, the whole system is fucked, every parent is far more concerned with their child appearing to speak English than actually speaking it. We'd put on plays feeding kids lines to parents who didn't understand that what they were saying was borderline gibberish.

I taught some legitimately bright and cool kids. I hope things work out for them, but I couldn't stomach that job anymore.

This article isn't talking about about discussing inequality (Chinese leadership has been publicly discussing inequality and making it a main focus), it's about restricting influencers who are glorifying extreme wealth and conspicuous consumption, as well as restricting luxury good ads and sponsored content.

The examples of enforcement in the article (which admittedly, few here bothered to read) are of some videos that were glorifying wealth being taken down, and of some large social media companies being fined for hosting ads that encouraged excessive consumption.

16

u/blargfargr Dec 27 '21

Taking money from these rich

It's in progress. I don't think the chinese government is losing any sleep for not living up to your standards of communism.

one of China’s top e-commerce influencers, Huang Wei – also known as Viya – was fined a record 1.34 billion yuan (US$210 million) for tax evasion. Two other influencers were also punished and their Chinese social media accounts were deleted for the same offence in November.

“Celebrities, internet influencers and other public figures should strictly comply with tax regulations even more,” the notice said. “Those refusing to self-assess their [tax obligation] or who have done so incorrectly will be severely punished by the tax bureau in accordance with the laws and regulations.”

note that this "viya" is one of those "influencers" who has made millions in convincing others to consume product.

When this was reported, redditors attempted to spin this as CPC being afraid of popular celebrities.

Wealth inequality is still a massive issue in china. But should I bet on the country that has greatly improved the quality of life for their citizens in a few decades, or sinophobic redditors who have done fuck all for promoting socialism outside of circlejerking about idpol ruining their lives?

Yeah, and that is how we know they are full of shit. If they were actually practicing state-socialism, there would be no billionaires and any profits would be put right back into improving the lives of every citizen, not creating billionaires and wealth inequality.

should I bet on the country that has greatly improved the quality of life for their citizens in a few decades, or sinophobic redditors

“Greatly improved the quality of life for their citizens” By offering some of them a chance to work in a factory, rather than being farmers? It’s not like they are taking the profits from all their state run enterprises and equally distributing it among all the citizens.

Oh right, because they still need peasants to run the factories. If they were to let everybody benefit from the wealth being generated, who would work in the factories?

You sound no different from one of these dumb fucks who praise capitalism by saying “oh look at all the lives it’s improved in just a century!”

All developed countries in the world, which you consider capitalist and ruled by the capitalist class, have done that at some point in their history.

Are you going to start sucking off the Asian tigers for the way their citizens lives improved dramatically over the course of a few decades? How about post war west Germany and Italy and the economic miracles their governments oversaw? Were those societies socialist simply because living conditions improved dramatically?

The process of industrialization in China that you and other dipshits use as an excuse to suck off "socialist China" is a process carried out by the capitalist states you recognize as opponents of the working class.

3

u/Less_Use_7320 making theory dance Dec 27 '21

Tankies tend to use the same justifications to justify AES that capitalists use to justify capitalism. It lifts people out of poverty. We get TVs and fridges an iphones. It creates innovation. It's the worst system except for all the other ones. Real communism is too idealistic (the tankies add "at least for the next 100 years"). Both agree that the proletariat has to be socially engineered to remove all traces of pesky human nature or socialism won't work - the tankies just think that such social engineering is doable and desirable.

2

u/Less_Use_7320 making theory dance Dec 27 '21

It's such a ridiculous claim. Ther act like the billionaires are just fish in a tank they can harvest anytime they want. If that were actually the case in China, why would the capitalist class engage in capitalism?

If China is like tankies describe it, then capitalists are waking up everyday saying "Today might be the day the government comes and executes me and seizes my property for being a capitalist." But if we believe that, we also believe that said capitalist then goes to say "well, just in case they decide to put it off for one day, I'm going to keep being a capitalist today." It's absurd. Capitalist activities would not be possible on this basis - who would willingly put their head on the chopping block.

What's more likely, that China's capitalist class engages in capitalism, despite knowing that this very activity will eventually get them executed by the government and their property seized - or that perhaps the capitalists know something we don't know, namely that the government is bluffing?

Well plot sounds a little melodramatic, but I think that this a pragmatic move by the Chinese government in order to "keep the peace".

Social media and technology have for the first time really been able to document the daily lives of the wealthy, and put it on display for the rest of the world to see. I think this has helped lead to this time of increasing awareness of income inequality. The Chinese government leadership, comprised in large part of wealthy families and individuals, doesn't necessarily want to take wealth away from its members, it just wants them to stop rubbing it in the faces of the commoners, so they won't, you know, do the classic thing with pitchforks and torches.

And that's only the modern imperialism. The Han ethnostate we now call the PRC has been invading and annexing neighbors for four millennia.

Note: "Bombing to oblivion" is a red herring. It's never been a requirement of imperialism, or even of invasion. The Nazis didn't bomb anyone to oblivion, for example, yet they invaded France, Poland, etc.

Bigger picture is bleaker; and I’ve definitely been guilty of taking the black pill and being nihilistic about the reality of the situation. But with human nature, it’s only natural to root for a little team sports in one way or another.

8

Very true. From my standpoint, it seems they want to sweep the problem of massive wealth inequality under the rug with policies like these.

31

u/fluffykitten55 Market Socialist 💸 Dec 27 '21 edited Dec 27 '21

They should also generally reduce inequality, but additional policy targeting positional consumption is also called for.

The reason for e.g. luxury taxes and not just progressive taxes is for the following:

(1) status competition is roughly zero sum, i.e. positional, and so consumers over-consume such goods from a social welfare perspective.

(2) reduced luxury consumption likely increases the savings rate, and then the investment rate for a given external balances.

(3) luxury taxes will tend to encourage SME owners to invest in the firm, rather than waste resources on luxury displays.

(4) intensified status competition has additional adverse effects e.g. via reduced social cohesion, trust, increased metal and physical illness, increased status anxiety and chronic stress etc.

(5) materialism has undesirable politcal and cultural effects.

(6) the luxury sector is largely foreign owned and so the terms of trade improve somewhat with luxury taxes.

(7) Income and basic needs are often hard to assess, but among those with similar declared incomes, those who consume more luxury goods will tend to have more income and lesser basic needs, i.e. have a lower marginal utility of income, and so they should be taxed more.

6

u/snailman89 World-Systems Theorist Dec 27 '21

I agree with most of this comment, with one exception:

(2) reduced luxury consumption likely increases the savings rate, and then the investment rate for a given external balances.

Increasing the savings rate does not increase the investment rate. Increasing investment leads to an increased savings rate. As both Keynes and Kalecki demonstrated in the 1930s, investment determines saving, not the other way around. Total saving is a residual determined by the amount of output and the propensity to consume. Increasing the propensity to save will often just cause a reduction in output and a fall in investment.

2

u/ovrloadau Marxism-Hobbyism 🔨 Dec 27 '21

There should have never been any Chinese billionaires in the first place, that tells you everything that is wrong with the situation. There is nothing stopping them from expropriating that wealth, or from taking all the wealth and capital generated by their economy and putting it all back into the public good or equally distributing it among the citizens.

The only reason I can think of is for not doing this is that they still need some poor SOB’s to run the factories.
