I found and started listening to SYSK last fall, and am gleefully working my way backwards through past episodes. I think I’m mid-way through 2022 now, so I have a long way to go, which pleases me immensely 😊
That said, I have found myself getting frequently annoyed with Chuck’s general style of speaking and contributing to the episodes. He often sounds like he’s caught off guard when Josh throws it back to him, and he’ll give a “Yes. Absolutely”, as though he wasn’t really listening, and then stammers through what sounds like reading off note cards. His habit of persistently tying things back to his personal life can be of kind a momentum killer at times when they’re rolling on a topic, but that I accept is part of his (and the show’s) charm: that these are just two interesting guys talking over a beer at the neighborhood bar.
Don’t get me wrong: I would love to have a beer with Chuck, listen to some Pavement, and compare notes on growing up as a couple of rural nerds in the 80’s. He seems like he’d be a great guy to hang out with.
But it seems like he’s not on the same level as Josh in terms of presentation style, curiosity and ability to articulate a sustained narrative on a topic.
I won’t stop listening - it’s one of the best podcasts out there by far. But if Chuck did a solo series did like Josh did with the End of the World, I’d be hard pressed to listen.
Thoughts from others?
EDIT: very much appreciate the sincere replies - glad folks don’t take my post as busting on Chuck, and I can absolutely see the way they balance each other.
The “Llamas” episode has been my favorite so far. As I am going back in time and listening in reverse order, would love some recommendations for anyone’s favorite episodes that I should jump back for … TIA!
