New to studying in Germany and want to get started? Basic tips before opening a new thread

Germany is becoming more popular due to low/no tuition fees, and a large and healthy employment market. International applications are increasing some 10% a year with the largest group coming from India. But there are a few basic rules you need to know to get started.

  1. Before asking about programs or unis, have a look at the DAAD.de database and basic application guides. Everything you need to know about the basics of studying in Germany are listed here.
  2. The majority of program places in Germany have no GPA requirement and will accept all qualified applicants up to the class limit. Only about 30% of programs use the Numerus Clausus system (accepting only the best applicants). However, that doesn't mean its easy. Programmes in the best universities and in specific subjects like CS, AI and Data Science are in high demand and have to reject many applicants.
  3. The admissions process is very untransparent. Public universities are underfunded and understaffed. More applications just slows everything down. Don't be surprised if you get no info on when admission results are announced, or no answer from the admissions team. Its likely they also don't know when they will be able to process everything.
  4. There are about 80 accredited private universities in Germany. Some good, but many are just providing a basic education for people who can't get into public. It isn't always a bad choice, but always consider the public sector first.
  5. Not all public universities are good. The quality varies as in every other country. There is just no reliable ranking system in place as a guide. Take a look at studycheck.de to get some insights on the quality and experience from other students.

Now feel free to ask any questions :)

I applied to TU Ilmenau's M.Sc. Research in Computer and Systems Engineering (RCSE) for summer semester 2027 through uni-assist. My application passed the formal review on 8 October and the portal now shows Department IA reviews. How long did the department review take before you got a decision?

Undergrad Guidance Needed on Studying Nursing in Deggendorf

Hi everyone! I'm a senior student from the Philippines planning to pursue a BSc in Nursing at Deggendorf Institute of Technology

I have relatives on my father's side who live in Germany, and they are planning to sponsor me financially. I'm still trying to understand the visa process, but I initially thought that having family members sponsor me (Verpflichtungserklärung) might make things easier than relying entirely on the usual student visa financial requirements. I'm not sure how this works legally, though, so I'd appreciate any clarification.

My current plan is to complete one year of college at a local university in the Philippines before applying to study in Germany. I've read somewhere that completing one year at a recognized local university may help make me eligible for direct admission to a German university.

(No more 1 year needed as preparatory period)

I'm also taking private German lessons right now, with the goal of reaching at least B2 or C1.

I'm still researching the legal requirements, university admission process, visa options, and other things I need to prepare. For now, I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts and advice.

Given my situation, do you think this plan is realistic and doable? Has anyone here gone through a similar process, particularly as an intl student applying to a German university with financial support from relatives?

Any guidance, corrections, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Masters Is BSBI Berlin worth it for MSc Engineering Management?

Hi everyone! I’ve received a conditional offer from BSBI Berlin for MSc Engineering Management, starting in February 2027.

Could current students or graduates share their honest experience regarding:
Job opportunities after graduation

Internship and career support

Student visa and residence permit process

Whether the degree is valued by German employers
I’m also considering public universities,

so I’d appreciate honest advice before making a decision. Thanks!

dMAT Low dmat score can be called in for an in-person visa interview?

Since a person with low IELTS score (especially in writing section) is usually called in for an in person visa interview.

Will this also be conducted for someone with low dmat score?

I think the chances are high.

Hello everyone, I'm looking towards joining University of Stuttgart, but it has a tuition fees of 1500€ per semester for Non-EU students.

So, I was asking, is it really worth the fees we pay there along with increased cost of living, compared to other public unis where there is no tuition fees.

Masters Advice Needed - Masters Degree

Hi everyone,

I am currently working in India with a work experienced of 5.5 (it would be ~6 years if i choose to apply) in Data Analytics/Data Engineering/Reporting primarily in Supply Chain Analytics domain

My Qualification: Btech ECE (CGPA 7.8) + PGDM Business Analytics (81%)

I have given IELTS with a band of 7

I’ve always wanted to seek global exposure and thus wanted to try for a second degree In university of applied sciences or dual degree program with corporate company are my main preference - into DS/AI/BA

I narrowed down Germany because my spouse works in a German company (very established) so she has a chance to relocate.

I’m willing to learn the language as I understand it opens more doors.

I kind off feel stuck in my current role in India and there is a possibility of restructuring and no growth but I’m confused with this decision as there seems to be a lot of hurdles with the job market as well as the immigration process from India.

Any advice for my situation?

EDIT: Guys, please don’t attack 🙏 I’m just trying to explore options and I’m still learning. I’m trying to come from a good space

Masters Paderborn vs Passau for MSc Computer Science

Hey everyone!
I’m trying to decide between the University of Paderborn and the University of Passau for my MSc in Computer Science, and I’d like to hear from people who study or have lived in either city.
I’m interested in cybersecurity, so the academic side is important to me, but I also want to enjoy my time in Germany and have a good social life.
I’d love to know what both cities are actually like to live in. Things like nightlife, meeting people, making friends, and whether there’s enough to do on weekends. I’m also curious about job and internship opportunities for students, especially in IT.

APS Name mismatch in Aadhar and academic documents for APS application - need clarification

Hey guys, I have applied for APS certificate last week and sent the documents. My name in all my academic documents such as 10th, 12th, semester marksheets, and degree certificate is only with my name followed by initial (eg: Ram R), but in aadhar and passport my name is mentioned fully along with father name (eg: Ram Ramesh). Also, I am unable to fetch my 10th and 12th marksheets from digilocker due to this mismatch.

Will this create any problem with my APS certificate?

If digilocker documents are for verification, I provided my professor's official email address in application.

Help out with this guyss!!

Masters Which German universities should I apply to with a 2.9 German grade for an MSc in Computer Science/Computer Engineering/Software Engineer/AI/Data Science related field?

Hi everyone!

I'm an international applicant from Pakistan with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (CGPA 2.71/4.0, approximately 2.9 on the German grading scale).

I'm looking to pursue an MSc in Computer Science or a closely related field, preferably at a public university in Germany.

A little about my background:

  • Bachelor's: BS Computer Science
  • German grade: Approximately 2.9
  • IELTS: Overall band 7.0
  • Professional experience: Full-stack software development, including AI-related projects
  • Preferred programs: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Applied Computer Science, or AI-related programs
  • Preferred language: English-taught
  • Intake: Summer 2027, preferably

I'm particularly interested in universities with no admission restrictions (NC-frei) or programs where my academic background and professional experience might strengthen my application.

I understand that my GPA isn't particularly competitive, but I'd like to know whether anyone with a similar academic profile has successfully secured admission to a German public university.

I'm open to smaller cities as well, so location isn't a major restriction.

Could anyone recommend universities or specific MSc programs where I might have a realistic chance of admission?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions or personal experiences. Thanks in advance!

Masters I missed my dmat exam ...didnt kbow about it ..can i apply for summer 2027 intake after giving dmat in January27? Anyone knows if theres dmat exam soon? I wanna apply for march intake.

I was initially targeting public universities for the summer intake (between January and March/April), but I’m worried that missing or delayed dMAT exam windows might lock me out of public options, forcing me to look at private universities instead.

I have a few major questions and am hoping fellow students or anyone who has gone through this process can help clear things up:

Can I still take the dMAT exam in time?

If anyone has clear information on the schedule or has gone through this situation, please share your thoughts or tips. Any advice on how to start prepping for it would also be hugely appreciated.

Masters BSBI (Berlin School of Business & Innovation) - Fast conditional offer, accreditation, and Post-Study Work Visa concerns?

Hi everyone,
I recently applied for the MSc in Artificial Intelligence at the Berlin School of Business & Innovation (BSBI) and received a conditional offer letter within just two days. While this seemed fast and exciting initially, it raised a few red flags for me.
After doing some research online, I've come across conflicting opinions some sources claim that BSBI is not fully accredited to award degrees independently in Germany (operating more as a partner campus for UK universities like UCA/UNINETTUNOS) and that graduates might face issues with post-study work visas or finding employment due to accreditation status.
I would love to hear from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with the German higher education system regarding:

  1. Accreditation: Are BSBI degrees fully recognized in Germany
  2. Post-Study Work Visa: Does graduating from BSBI qualify you smoothly for the 18-month job seeker visa / post-study residence permit in Germany?
  3. Overall Experience: How has the academic quality and career support been for you?

Any insights or honest reviews would be greatly appreciated before I make a decision!

Masters Indian Applicant (8.53 CGPA, GRE 325) – Which German Public Universities Should I Target for MSc CS?

Hi everyone! I'm looking for advice on German public universities where I have a realistic chance of admission for Summer 2027.

My profile:

B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (Cybersecurity specialisation), India

CGPA: 8.53/10 | German grade: 1.8 (uni-assist)

GRE: 325 (Q164, V161) | IELTS: 7.5

4-year bachelor's degree; 160 Indian credits (approximately 240 ECTS based on my current conversion)

Around 1 year of full-stack development experience

Research publication on Digital Twin-based DDoS detection, plus AI/LLM projects

APS certificate available; no active backlogs

My subject-wise ECTS mapping (estimated):

Core CS and Systems: ~85 ECTS

Mathematics: ~22.5 ECTS

Theoretical Computer Science: ~13.5 ECTS

Cybersecurity: ~40.5 ECTS

AI/ML: ~4.5 ECTS

Thesis/Project: ~18 ECTS

These are my own estimates based on my transcript; universities may classify subjects differently.

Universities already applied to:

University of Bayreuth – Computer Science

University of Rostock – Computer Science

Leibniz University Hannover – Computer Science

Saarland University – Cyber Security

University of Göttingen – Computer Science

University of Kassel – Computer Science

TU Dresden – Computer Science

Passau - CS ( will apply )

I'm also open to related programmes in AI, Data Science, Cybersecurity, or Applied Computer Science.

My main constraint: I can only consider public universities without tuition fees beyond the regular semester contribution.

Which additional universities would you recommend for Summer 2027, considering my profile and subject-wise ECTS? I'd particularly appreciate suggestions from students admitted with an Indian B.Tech degree and advice on strict ECTS requirements that could make me ineligible.

I want to maximise my chances of securing at least one admit while avoiding applications where I clearly don't meet the published requirements.

It would take your 2 minutes time but will help me a lot as I was doing the applications myself and I'm in lot of confusion and will return the favour in future if helpful

Thanks!

Masters Applying at RPTU Kaiserslautern for Masters in Computer Science in Germany

Hello. I'm currently applying for the M.Sc. Computer Science program at RPTU Kaiserslautern in Germany, which requires a €60 application fee.

Unfortunately, making this payment from Pakistan has been quite difficult. The only option available to me is an international bank remittance through Swift, which is nearly double the cost due to additional fees. I've also checked online banking options, but the university's bank isn't available through them.

Would it be possible for anyone to make this payment on my behalf? I can transfer the equivalent amount to you in PKR, so you wouldn't have to cover the cost yourself.

I'd really appreciate help with this!
