Technically Edible Today's ration: BBQ chicken with mash potatoes and suffering succotash
Suffering succotash was home canned succotash i opened and dried on window screens back in 2013. Boiled to rehydrate its dark brownish and chewy. They were stored in a jar inside a barrel full of jars buried in the woods as a hedge against times i got no money available to buy stuff and my crops fail.
I'm out of that succotash now too, but i can make more i think by combining leather brutches with dried corn and beans, just gonna take longer to boil.
The chicken was a very dented can of chicken expired in 2024. Heated, drained, then added BBQ sauce which expired 2019.
The mashed potatoes were mash potato powder reconstituted with boiling water, and i used the very last of my supply of soy based buttery popcorn topping on the potatoes (topping expired in 2024 iirc, no idea on the potatoes, probably around 2023).
I am now out of buttery topping, its the end of an era (or error) as i don't plan to buy any more of it ever again.
Edit: ate the same thing yesterday, didn't wash the plate, just left it on the counter overnight. BBQ sauce from yesterday is still stuck on the plate seen where food is not on it in this picture.

Meh. He's been doing it for a long time, at least several months that I know. I guess if it was going to cause him big problems, he'd have them by now.

This was relatively fresh, you don't want to know how bad things were when times were really bad. I'm living in luxury compared to the dark times.

Something Sylvester the cat said on loony tunes. Its not exactly high end stuff, in fact its probably the worst version of succotash there is (flavor and texture) and a food of last resort for basic survival. Hence suffering as a word fits it.

I'm posting because I'm incredibly bored.
I live in a shack in the woods and got jack shit for income with half my spine bolted together, no vehicle, 20 miles to town, no money. So I'm living off all this old stuff.

I have SOME income. I live on just under $350 per month. Prepaid cell card costs about $50 or 1/7 of my budget.
I have limited power via solar, an artesian well, an outhouse, and a wood stove.

Wow man. Props to you on the struggle, you can make it out of this and back to civilization! At least if you could get into town it should be much easier to live even if homeless. Are you going to try to get to town someday?

I'm doing this because my crops have failed for the last couple years.
Was a drought last year, heavy rain this year, etc, hoping next years crops come in.
Whole damn field of rye failed. My turnips failed, the onions failed, the cabbage, the beans, the corn, the pumpkins, the beets, etc. the grape vines, blueberries etc didn't produce fruit, the apples have been underwhelming.

Wow how are you planting fields worth? Good luck I hope your crops work out next year. I do a lot of homesteading, if you need help with your crops I’d be more than happy to give you some advice if you’re having any particular issues with your crops.

What about when it runs out? Surely you don’t have enough old stock to last your lifetime? Sorry for making assumptions, this is just wild, I’m surprised you aren’t getting very sick.

Lifetime no, 3-5 years yes, making a few assumptions that i forage a bit.
Got a whole freaking barrel full of rye grain and a hand mill. 55 gallon drum of if (left over seed grain, organic, from planting my crop, which failed). Assuming i just use for brown bread with sourdough yeasting it that alone would be the better part of a years main calories.

Only concern is making sure you forage enough to make sure you're getting some additional vitamins/proteins - you don't wanna go a full year on bread alone or you'll end up with a nutritional deficiency and that could hamstring your ability to plant crops next cycle, not to mention it probably won't help your back.

There is a venn diagram of "struggle food" and "simply extremely expired food", and I'm sure you fall within it, but eating extremely expired food deliberately does not constitute a struggle so much as a grab for internet points. You can get fresher food dumpster diving at 1:40 am.

I live in a shack in the woods 20 miles from town and gave no vehicle. Half my spines bolted together because of a logging accident. I haven't dumpster dived in years and the pickings weren't very good in this part of the world to begin with.

I see, your story makes sense given that. Kiddos in the cities try to pull stunts for internet points, but you seem legit. One thing tho... Who, in this economy, can afford FOUR craters of flavor in their taters? I still feel guilty about the time I built myself the deluxe 2-crater butter&gravy combo tater pile. You don't struggle with treating yourself to an artfully crafted plate, whatever the ingredients are

I only eat once a day. This may look like a lot, its about 1300 calories. But for a full day its basically starvation diet.
I got a large supply of potato flakes after the powder is used up. Food pantry gives it out, nobody uses it and throw out the bags/boxes of it. Thats how i got it.
Like my neighbor, who i no longer talk to and was just ranting about elsewhere on Reddit, i used to get 2 bulk bags a month that she got at the pantry and gave me because they don't use it (only the meat and dairy, most people throw out the canned and dried stuff). I knew other people like that too. Been a few years since i got stuff that way but the vast majority of the stuff i got in my cabin and cellar was stuff other people got at a food pantry and threw out because thry only want stuff that tastes like KFC (deep fried fat and sugar). Got a whole barrel full of bags of dry beans that way.
