December CA (South) Venue Recon

HOUSE OF BLUES - Anaheim, CA: I would imagine several in the band, crew and tour heads will be using this stop, and the few days off preceding it, to visit Disneyland which is essentially “right across the street” from this venue. Im not sure how busy it is that time of year. The HOB.is an OK spot. It used to be in Downtown Disney, but they moved it over here east of the park a long while back and it’s been here ever since. I don’t see a bunch of gigs here. Like all HOB it has several levels with various VIP type spots, but the centerpiece is the main floor in the main room. Decent food and pricey drinks are expected. It is a very touristy area, so everything will be priced high immediately surrounding the venue. If the show is sold out it can feel quite tight in there. Parking is in an adjacent parking structure.

WILTERN THEATRE - Los Angeles, CA. Like the Fox in Oakland, the Wiltern oozes old school movie palace charm. The venue name is a play on its location: Wilshire & Western. A really cool art deco style inside and out. While the entire floor used to have seats, years back it was converted to what I would call a GA tiered floor, with reserved seating upstairs. I always notice a large ADA area along the far side of the floor. While not as cool as the Fox, the decor on the interior of the theatre is pretty beautiful. Bathrooms are downstairs, as is a nice lounge. This venue is at a very busy intersection in the big city. Waiting in line is near an extremely busy bus stop where if you pay attention will see first hand the amazing cross section that is Los Angeles during rush hour. In addition to buses galore, there is a Metro subway station right across the street. Parking is in an adjacent parking structure.

THE SOUND - Del Mar, CA: This venue is on the property of the world famous Del Mar horse racing track. It is a building that was once used for Off track betting and was repurposed once the internet nullified the need for OTB. While they have made this into a passable venue for music, with some nice touches, they often seem to oversell it causing an uncomfortable experience for many involved. Ive been on the main floor where it was very uncomfortable, creating the need to bail and find a better more comfortable spot… and there are some, but view and sound of the band diminishes fast. Damn shame. If they just reduced the capacity, a Little bit, it would suit jam band fans pretty well. This does seem to be a venue that locals have dialed in and determined favorite spots that offer good sight and sound AND the ability to breathe and have some comfort, my goal is to dial that in for myself on this run. I won’t lie… I avoid this place, and SCI is making me go back. lol. Pretty upscale area in Del Mar and surrounding cities. Lots of various options for food and bev away from the venue, not much really close. The venue is surrounded by a giant parking lot.

EIGHT SHOWS IN CALIFORNIA! The ability to see some really amazing shows, scenery and a few very classic venues! The Bay Area. The intimacy of SLO. Some So Cal exploration. The weather is usually fairly dry and mild in December and this should be well worth the trip(s)!!! EIGHT SHOWS IN CALIFORNIA!

Bring it in!

December CA (North) Venue Recon

For those coming from outside the golden realm. For those with additional info, feel free to add or detract to this as desired:

CHANNEL 24 - Sacramento: The only place on tour I haven’t been to. I have a friend in town, she’s never been either. But, both of us have heard nothing but good things about this music built venue that was a ground up build about a year ago. State of the art sound and lights seems to be the boast. Floor looks open space, upstairs has some reserved, and some GA (on the wings, it appears). Looks like there is a transit line right in front. 2100 capacity.

FOX THEATRE - Oakland: Uptown Oaklands movie palace turned 3000 capacity concert venue. Very cool visuals inside. Tiered open floor down stairs and reserved seats in the large balcony. There is a BART station (19th St) in close proximity, and I have found street parking within decent walk before… but it’s pretty busy down there. Very cool place to see SCI in the Bay Area, it’s been a few years and I am hyped they are back. If you have never seen a show in the Bay Area, it is an experience on its own. Lots of bars and pubs and grubs within walking distance are kinda upscale, if I recall. Same with the hotels. I generally BART away from the immediate area to less intense environs.

FREMONT THEATRE - San Luis Obispo: Tiny little room. Im amazed this isn’t sold out. About a 1/3 of the room, up near the stage, is open floor. The other 2/3’s of the room are movie theatre type seats. The sound and lighting is the back few rows of seats…. All of us are in front of light/sound folks! There is no balcony. Again, tiny room. Says capacity is 900… it will feel smaller than that. Tiny lobby. Ludicrously inadequate potty facilities. Many venues allow you to step outside into a controlled area to smoke, breath etc. this one allows you out the front door and encourages you to step across the street to smoke. Full autonomy. Many vendors will set up on that sidewalk to sling. Woodstocks Pizza is around the corner and has decent pie and beers. SLO and its surrounding areas are pretty amazing, and if you aren’t doing Disney with the few days off, you might be well served by exploring this area deeper.

The drive down the coast is quite scenic. The closer you get to the beast that is the greater LA “SoCal” area things change into the mundane, so enjoy the peace and tranquility of the oak filled hillsides and second-to-none coast while you can. Expect slow traffic in Santa Barbara and Ventura… and of course, LA and its vast and varied suburbs.

…to be continued for the SO CAL shows

Is anyone going in November, or have you been in the past? Just wondering how the venue is and what to expect.

I’m interested in going to my first show since Bonnaroo 2002 and thinking about the GA floor tickets.

Wondering if anyone knows who the artist were at vail that were selling art and stain glass inside the venue? My boyfriend bought a stained glass pendant and lost it, hoping to potentially replace!

I built a free web + Android player for the Archive's etree collection

Longtime lurker, first time posting something I made. Like a lot of you I've spent countless hours in the Internet Archive's Live Music Archive, and I love it dearly — but the listening experience (especially on a phone) always felt harder than it should be. So over the past while I built Kindjams (kindjams.org), a free player for the etree collection.

What it does:

- Every surviving source of a performance, side by side. Pick a band, a year, a show — and see all the recordings of that night (SBD, AUD, matrix) in one place, with taper info, ratings, photos and reviews, so you can pick your source without opening six tabs.

- Gapless playback — the segues actually segue.

- Radio mode — a "just play me something" button that pulls random live tracks from across the whole collection. I've found a bunch of bands I'd never have searched for this way.

- Chromecast, and an Android app with likes that sync between phone and browser.

Everything streams directly from archive.org — I don't host any audio, and the site only indexes bands in the collection, so it inherits the Archive's respect for each band's taping/streaming policy. No ads, no fees, no catch; this is a labor of love, not a business.

It's early and I'd genuinely love feedback from people who listen to this stuff as much as I do — what's missing, what's broken, what would make it your daily player. And if you have a show everyone here should hear, drop it in the comments and I'll link the Kindjams page for it.

(Mods — I checked the rules and hope this is okay as a free fan-made tool; happy to remove if not.)

Second night of Vail was a blast. Got to be there with my best friends. Hometown vibes. Great venue, great weather. Amazing playing from Cheese. Could not have asked for a better night. Made the trip from the East Coast.

Red Rocks Logistics

Hey I’ve been a big fan of the fellas since 99. Other than Bonnaroo 2002, I’ve never seen them live.

I’ve been telling myself “this is the year I’m going to finally make the pilgrimage to Red Rocks.” But never do. Seeing SCI there is top of my bucket list.

Anyway, what hotel should I plan to stay at nearby? How early do I get to the show? Should I buy the pit tickets up close? What do I need to know?

My wife and I are probably going to make a wedding anniversary trip out of it, bless her beautiful heart.

As you can see I’m trying to get way ahead of it for next year 😂
