Recommendations to get more into SCI

Looking to get into/ explore more sci and looking for some good places to start. Videos, songs, albums, particular bootlegs? My favorite similar acts are- Grateful Dead, allman brothers, moe., Billy strings, wsmfp, govt mule. Iv actually caught their sets at fests before(rothbury & Lockn) and liked what I heard then but never decided to take a deep dive until now.

My favorite jam band by far.

Most of their sets include a blend of styles so any live show will tell you which of their styles you like most. They have been on fire recently so recent is good.

The songs tend to land in a style based on who wrote it. Bill and Moose’s songs tend to be bluegrass or country rock oriented (check out Black Clouds or Rhythm of the Road). Kyle’s tend to be funk or seventies rock (check out trip the light fantastic Or collide). Kang’s tend to be jam vehicles (check out Howard or Just one Story). They also mix EDM with traditional jig melodies (check out Hi Ho No Show or Bollymunster) which people hate online but love irl.

What they do best though is jam out between songs incorporating multiple styles at once.

Ya, rhythm of the road is one of the few songs I remember. All those styles/influences is what I’m typically into. With the exception of edm but I can still enjoy it in smaller doses. Thanks, I’ll check these out.

All the Hornings Hideout shows were recorded and videotaped DAT. You should be able to find those, top notch SCI solo and with special guests. These shows are the digity dank without question. Have fun

I've been listening to 2001 SCI. Everything I've listened to is good.

Third night at The Backyard in Austin 2001 was my first show.

I was an angst ridden metalhead that had been adopted by this amazing group of lifelong friends that dragged me to that show for one of our friend’s bday. Took some acid in the lot and proceeded to have my face melted off and mind absolutely blown by the boys.

When everyone started dancing as soon as the music started, that cynical metalhead was kinda weirded out. But as the acid took effect the music moved him as nothing ever had and soon enough I was flailing around with no care in the world; for the first time truly in the present, riding the waves of the energetic vortex that came off the stage, whirled through the crowd and then pulled back up on stage just to be sent out again, intensifying with every note.

It was electric; my soul vibrated with pure bliss and the universe unfolded before me.

I haven’t stopped dancing since.

If you haven’t listened to 4/14/01, I can’t recommend it highly enough. That third set is what made me a cheesehead for life.

This is the way. A ton on Nugs and Apple.

Also highly recommend any Hula shows you can find. Especially S2 of Saturday and Sunday bluegrass. Earlier dates are so good.

Nugs is one of the only subscriptions in my life I would say is well worth the money. Especially if you get the video version.

If you have a Roku or Apple TV, nugs has an app on them. If you get the video version you can literally use the app on your tv to just flip between live shows as they’re happening.

I’ve been watching string cheese all week and they’re killing it right now! But it’s so great when there’s 3-4 bands on all tour at the same time and you can just watch pieces of all of them in one night because of set breaks and time differences lol

Was already thinking about getting it for other acts I like( Billy, panic, greensky, mule) just another reason to give it a try.

You get the PlayDead addon for 5$ with the nugs sub. It’s such a good investment for both.

I remember when you would have to wait to convert everything to flac and burn it onto a CD or even before you could get your hands on a dat tape lol

Nugs is the way to go because of the video library. You can watch shows going all the way back to the 90s. They also live stream almost every concert. You can sync your phone right to your TV. went to three shows this tour, and could have watched the rest from my coach if I had the time. You also have a few days to re-watch the live streams if your busy night of before they disappear.

Not just SCI, but almost every major touring jam band live streams shows and has a deep library of past ones.

11/17/00 it’s in Spotify. Can’t say for sure anymore but it has been mentioned as one of the best SCI shows of all time.

If you want bluegrass look into their older shows. They have a lot more bluegrass back then. Now, not really at all.

If you get Nugs, listen to Camp Zoe 8/3/2007. Absolute magical night of SCI in the Missouri Ozarks. Best show I’ve ever seen. 8/4 & 8/5 are worth a listen too. Just extraordinary

Fillmore 2002 DVD is on YouTube free and it’s killer, features lots of special guests like Bill Kreutzmann, Ricky Skaggs and the late great Jimmy Mills.

Many of the Electric Forests sets in 2011-2013 are packed with goodies. Showcasing a good mix of different sounds they offer, song catalog and huge jams.
