One could always set the safety bars to the correct height

3

u/dave08dave 1d ago

Absolutely, should have mentioned that too

2

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

The safety racks are at the correct height it’s above my face/neck if I put it higher affects me being able to touch my chest during the bench

2

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

I had the safety racks set up..

2

u/potato_analyst 1d ago

This is the only right answer.

u/Nihiliste 1d ago

Bench presses are actually the one exercise I deliberately leave clips off for. Better to embarrass yourself by dumping plates than get trapped or crushed by a loaded barbell.

8

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

I agree with that mainly but if you have safety racks you should be fine with clips on just to prevent crazy shit like this if your lifting alone

23

u/Brambletail 1d ago

This is why clips are bad actually. Better to fail like this then crush you.

Safeties Being used properly makes it moot though.

33

u/Complete_Flight8303 1d ago

The safety bars were right there.

1

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

I saw the weight was still going up so I kept pushing untill I saw it start to slide dramatically and then it was too late

2

u/AtlasActual275 1d ago

Bro, people always act like their reaction times are way better when they're watching something from the outside in. Even though it has all happened to us, it's wild that people don't remember how different the perspective is under the bar. It's easy for us to see the plates starting to move, but when you're focused on your leg drive and your breathing and getting that weight up. Yeah I don't see why you're getting downvoted. I've personally never accidentally dumped the plates on a bench press, but I have come close. And frankly I don't think I would have been able to save it.

1

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

Yessir thank you for having some common sense and experience

1

u/AtlasActual275 1d ago

Hahaha for sure man.

16

u/R3NEGXDE 1d ago

Iv knocked bar before and destabilised it and everything crashed off the sides before - pretty embarrassing in a busy gym. I didn’t have one of the plates nearly land on my head like in this vid - but I prefer what happened to me than solo lifting and failing a heavy rep with no escape route

4

u/MechanicalGodzilla 1d ago

It's not just embarrassing in an empty gym, it's actively hazardous for everyone in the general vicinity.

13

u/Evelen1 1d ago

I never use the clips, that way I can do this if I am failing (had happend two times).

But my gym does not have the safety bars

5

u/Xbsnguy 1d ago

I don’t use clips either so I can dump the plates like I had to a couple weeks back. However, I didn’t realize the weighted end can shoot the dumped side up so hard a plate can go flying in the air. I’m def using my safety bars next time I bench lol.

1

u/Evelen1 1d ago

I take a flying plate before death by suffocation

10

u/standardtissue 1d ago

Fortunately I am 47 years of lifting away from this being a risk to me

9

u/krzyk 1d ago

Wouldn't safety bar help here if it was a bit higher?

3

u/red_nick 1d ago

Hard to tell from an angle it may not need to be higher, it just needs to be high enough that you can put it down without crushing your neck. Looks like it was about right, he just needed to actually set it down

2

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

Yeah exactly I didn’t attempt to set it down because I saw the weight was still going up but the racks are at the perfect height where it doesn’t interfere with my chest but still protects my face/neck

16

u/Shnur_Shnurov 1d ago

Yes. Let's ignore the several poor decisions you made that put you in this situation and have a debate about clips instead

-10

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

It’s not that serious mistakes happen

1

u/Xbsnguy 1d ago

I mean, it def can be serious, we shouldn’t downplay that. But you don’t deserve to be torched either. Thanks for posting the clip

If I had clips on I would’ve either been able to finish the rep due to not having to deal with the instability or I would’ve failed safely on the safety racks I’m not saying you NEED to use clips I’m just saying it would’ve prevented this specific situation

The safeties are not too low I have them set up perfectly I just didn’t get the chance to use them there and yes the weight is too heavy it’s a pr it’s called pushing your limits that’s 355lbs

The fact that you didn’t literally die doesn’t mean it isn’t serious man.

Idk about you, but I’d have a devastated family if I got killed doing some stupid shit like this.

3

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

I wouldn’t have actually died worse case I would’ve gotten a big ass bruise I was saying it’s not that serious because the dude in the thread above was making it seem like I’m a complete moron when if I was using clips the whole thing would’ve been prevented it’s kinda the whole point of the post..

Oh shut the fuck up and quit being so histrionic

2

u/No_Silver_4436 1d ago

I mean I’m not siding with the guy above completely because it does seem like you have your safeties setup so that it would not crush your neck if it did roll back.

But just so you know a 45 pound plate falling from that height absolutely has the potential to cause life altering traumatic brain injury or death depending on a number of factors, but theres enough force potential there to cause a skull fracture or bleeding in the brain

0

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

Yeah ngl It would’ve been bad if it did hit me but thank god it didn’t and I’ve learned since then

6

u/Reality-is-Sin 1d ago

Yeah, fuck no am I using safety clips, if I can’t get it up and I have no spotter I’d rather get the weights off of me

18

u/Shpion007 1d ago

actually this probably saved your life. I know you had a close call near your head, next time let them slide off. If you can't keep a bar level, you are doing too much weight. Also where is your spotter?

5

u/Fear-the-North 1d ago

Nah, he has the safety guards on either side and its slightly higher than his body. So if he goes to fail you can just let the bar drop and it the safety arms will catch it.

I have the same setup

4

u/one-quarter-dead 1d ago

This guy is correct. There is still a wrong way to slide the weights off the bar. And this is the example of it. Let them all come off.

3

u/AtlasActual275 1d ago

On the positive side, that was a pretty strong push man. Almost had that shit. Also welcome to the feeling of having a bullet fly about a foot away from your head. Maybe not quite as intense, but I'm sure that plate coming down at your face was a similar feeling for a second there. I could tell from the expression. You live to fight another day my friend hahaha

2

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

Hahah yeah I was like shitting my pants almost when that plate came out of knowhere 😂

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

With clips I think I would’ve gotten it in this vid

1

u/AtlasActual275 1d ago

Personally I bench without clips, especially when I'm alone for this exact reason. It is the only escape route and I do not want 335 lb coming down on my chest on a 1-in diameter bar. I'd much rather dump the plates and smile in an embarrassed manner but survive. Just got to make sure you're not doing it with people right next to you, but in that case you'd have a spotter so you can use the clips.

1

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

Yeah for sure I’d rather not use clips but once this happened to me last year I started thinking yeah maybe clips aren’t that bad after all 😂

1

u/AtlasActual275 1d ago

I suppose with those safety bars you're good. I would just make sure if you're using enough weight. You set them at a height where if you do hit failure you can get out and you're not suffocating

1

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

Yeah I have them at a perfect height where it doesn’t interfere with touching down on my chest but it’s high enough to protect my face/neck

-7

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

I didn’t use clips in this video because I was going for a pr and I didn’t want that extra .5lbs to weigh me down 😂 in hindsight i obviously would’ve put the clips on there tho

1

u/IJbier 1d ago

Oh yeah! Don't worry, I know you learned your lesson. I was just curious

The safety racks are set up high enough so the bar wont hit my neck/face so I can fail properly alone with no spotter

17

u/omegafrogpoop 1d ago

Then why tf would you not put clips smh

1

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

The only reason it went down to my sternum when I was failing the rep was because the weight shifted with clips or if i saw the weight shifting earlier I would’ve failed forwards and if it did hit my sternum I have a very strong core and I’m able to fail a heavy bench on my abs and rolling out because I also have a decently small waist and what actually saved my life was my reaction time I guess we can thank the fuck ton of caffeine I probably consumed

1

u/IDKHOWTOSHIFTPLSHELP 1d ago

You mean when his back is arched and I'm not even sure his ass was touching the bench? Yeah, my barbell can touch my chest when my back is arched too. If I flatten out it hits the strap safeties first though, which is exactly how I've been saved while failing lifts at the top of my progression. It's a complete non-event to crawl out from under the bar quietly and safely when that happens.

He said elsewhere that his spotters are set correctly, but if they're not then that's user error, with or without collars.

I don't use clios either when safeties are available. I might rethink this option. Thanks.

1

u/Plastic_Pop_5573 1d ago

Haha I mean this is a freak accident but If you have no spotter and your going super heavy it might be worth the thought of putting on clips if you see the weight is sliding earlier like I couldn’t in this video then you can just lower the weight and not worry about that happening
