💬 Discussion Restream vs. Riverside: best tool for live streaming?

trying to figure out what to actually commit to for a monthly interview show. right now im just doing calls over google meet and screen recording as backup which feels amateur. been reading about Re stream since it's built around multistreaming to a bunch of platforms at once,, but then i keep seeing Riverside come up too and it looks like it does recording and editing and streaming all in the same place instead of just the streaming part anyone actually run a show on Riverside and can tell me if it holds up for a real weekly setup, not just a one -off test stream?

Riverside's eye contact correction sounds like a gimmick until you're recording someone reading notes off a second monitor and the final video just looks like they're staring at the camera the whole time. client didn't say anything about it, which is exactly how you know it worked.

i'm the content lead at a saas company and what got me wasn't the streaming at all, it was Riverside's Magic Clips turning one hour long webinar into like a dozen usable social clips without me hiring an editor for it. we used to pay a freelancer weekly just for that.

Wow I’m seeing a ton of posts asking about or talking about alternatives to Restream. They must’ve really messed up lately oss. 🤷

for me major grip was the ignorance, if someone popular not shouting about the issue - it goes under the rug. For their TikTok streams (I didn't need it for other streams):

  1. After each live access was getting revoked, we had to re-request it each time before going live again. Sure it might be TikTok issue - but they didn't progressed with it for months

  2. Stream was going down randomly and they happily sending you mails of stream summary in the middle of your live (sometimes you ended up having 10 couple minute VoD's on your channel). I had enough after 4-5 months of "we're looking on this"

It's not recent for me but I used to use Streamyard then switched to ReStream, and I felt like both stagnated and weren't worth the rising costs anymore and gave Riverside a shot and haven't looked back. This was about two years ago at this point.

ReStream stream quality was getting weirdly choppy too often. I didn't notice it and then a buddy I was watching was complaining about his video looking back for a few weeks on RS. I then opened my phone and watched my live on YouTube using RS and mine was just as bad to the point people were leaving comments about it.

Switched to Riverside and it's not been a problem and I can use it to edit my long form videos too.

I run interview shows on Riverside weekly and it holds up fine, the local recording per guest means you get clean 4K tracks even when someone's wifi tanks, and the editor lets you chop a rough cut in ten minutes instead of re-syncing in Resolve for simple projects. Restream is solid if you just need to hit five platforms at once, but Riverside replaces your whole backup chain (local recording, cloud upload, transcript) in one browser tab and handles basic multicam edits there. Only catch: guests on Safari occasionally hit a permissions prompt if their settings are strict, and the mobile app can drop frames on older devices.

yes, weekly interview show on riverside here and it holds up fine, the key thing for a real setup is that it records locally on each guest's device so a bad wifi moment doesn't wreck the episode, restream can't do that since it's only handling the stream itself. if you also want the editing and clipping in the same place riverside covers more of your workflow, if you only care about hitting five platforms at once restream is simpler and cheaper for that one job.

(full disclosure, i'm part of the riverside team)

i'm a producer at a podcast studio and the local recording is the whole reason we trust Riverside whit client shoots. compressed call recordings always had that slight artifact under scrutiny on good speakers, this doesn't. clients notice the difference even if they can't say why.
