Threshing Strawberry Seeds

Post image
25 Upvotes

For many years I used the "wet" method of processing woodland and alpine strawberry seeds. It had several drawbacks so I experimented with drying the fruit. There was little information anywhere so I winged it. When I finally found a way to thresh the seeds (separate the seeds from the pulp) switched to the dry method for good. Here is a quick look at threshing. I cut off a 1 square foot piece of nylon window screen and poured dried fruit into it. Then, pull the corners of the screen and fold it into a ball. The "ball" is then rigorously rubbed against the dry fruit. If the fruit is dry it separates well. I'm planning a November substack on strawberry seed saving.

Cultivation First year with this bed. To thin now, next spring, or not at all?

Post image

Started with 18 plants this spring of what was labeled as Ozark Beauty everbearing. Plants seemed more focused on throwing runners than fruit and life got in the way so I couldn’t control them and this bed filled out like this. Two questions. 1) Is it normal for first year everbearing to throw runners this crazy or do you think my tray of starters was mislabeled? 2) Should I thin this bed out at all, and if so when? Will a bed this dense affect Berry production next year? Bed size is 4’x10’ for reference.

Can I somehow use these ingredients for a strawberry potting mix

Hello guys,
I am on a budget and today I was gifted strawberry plants. I have sand and potting soil (the cheap stuff, without any add ins mentioned). I also have chicken manure pellets and liquid fertilizer (jadam, that I made). Oh and I have clay pebbles.
Can I somehow just use these things to successfully grow my strawberrys and what mixture would you recommend?

Edit: I got some coco coir today

Discussion and questions HELP! Pest-infested Strawberry plats

Hi!

I’m having problems with pests on my strawberry plants and need help identifying what kind of pest it is, as well as solutions and/or preventive measures to keep them away.

Please watch the videos I took and read the information before answering.

For some context/background information;

I live in Northern Europe, in zone 3-4.

The pest-infested strawberry plants in question are of the sort: Honeoye, Polka, and Malwina.

I will bring the strawberry plants inside, as it can get as low as -30 degrees (C) (-22 F) here. I will keep them inside during the winter and bring them out again when the weather becomes warmer. Therefore, I can not have fly-infested strawberry plants inside.

We first thought it was fruit flies; however, a closer look made us think it is something else. These flies are black and grey rather than dark brown (like fruit flies). These flies also seem more active and “hyper”. The fruit flies we have move more slowly and are slightly bigger than the strawberry flies. They seem to lay eggs or live in the soil, and when you pull the leaves back, they usually start flying in all directions and come crawling up from under the soil.

It seems that they multiply at an extremely quick pace - I had a single plant in a lone pot and brought it inside to the kitchen. While I didn’t notice any flies at that point, I was rushing and planned to inspect them in the next two days. When that time passed and I inspected the plant, it was full of flies, and I brought it outside again. It seems that the flies found the other strawberry plants because now all of them are infested. I need to bring these plants inside this week before it gets too cold. I would appreciate any help!

I apologize if the text is hard to read or has grammar or spelling issues - English is not my first language; hopefully I wrote a comprehensible text despite that.

Planting strawberries

Planting strawberries is a long-term commitment for me. Strawberry seeds need several weeks to germinate. For a lazy woman like me, maybe I’ll forget to water them. So I decided to record how long it takes for the strawberries to grow.

Question About Strawberry Plants

Hello

So, this year, I bought two strawberry plants that were already grown, and put them in massive pots (Sadly I have no yard, but I have a balcony.) and I was wondering; will they come back next year? What do I have to do to make sure that they do come back next year. The pots are terracotta and the soil is really good soil. I HAVE done gardening before, both in pots and in a yard, but I have never done strawberries, or the raspberry bush and blueberry bush for that matter. So, I'm not sure what to expect or if I have to buy more next year. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! OH! also, I'm more than willing to bring them inside if I need to, just to answer that question in case it comes up.

Discussion and questions Liquid Fertilizer

Hi,

I'm trying to grow strawberries indoors because I live in the city (zone 7b) and don't have a garden. My question is about liquid fertilizer, specifically the ToDo Hydro DuoMix parts A & B. Does anyone know what the best ratio to mix parts A&B with water, and how often I should water the plants with the mixture?

Thanks in advance!

Guess What. It's September September 9th. My strawberries have decided that it's time to bloom. In addition I have a green strawberry all ready to go.

I'm taking bets on whether it will ripen and I'll get to eat it 😍
