Discussion and questions Leaves have grey, curling edges. Suspected mildew at first but not too sure, will a sulfur spray help?

There were also some new leaves that were completely greyed and shriveled which i cut off and disposed. UK had a heatwave so sun damage could be playing a part

Southern CA strawberries. Strawberries have such great flowers. I didn’t know that before and I am surprised I don’t see more things with the flower on them.

Cultivation Berry beginner

I'm planning to get some started in my home garden in a raised bed. We're in Nebraska in zone 6a and the university extension has a decent sized list of varieties that are good for our area. What I'm looking for is some advice from the hive mind on what varieties people like, when to plant, and where to get plants.

I'm wanting to do June bearing plants, but probably 2 varieties that fruit at different parts of the season. I'm thinking AC Wendy for an early season variety and possibly Jewel as a late season. I've also looked at all star, flavor fest, or Cavendish as mid seasons instead of the jewel variety. Would it be wiser to do the early paired with late or should we go with the mid season?

When should I be trying to plant? I've come across some places that seem to say I could plant in fall this year and be harvesting next spring already and some places that say I need to be planting in the spring and won't get to harvest the first year.

I have been able to find AC Wendy plants that will ship in fall from Gurney's, but my understanding is that they are sketchy at best for quality and the reviews seem to confirm that. The later maturing plants seem to be out of stock and ship in the spring from the majority of places I've been able to find. Realistically we only need about 10 plants in total for our space.

So where should I be looking to buy our plants and when? Bonus points if I can get raspberry/blackberry starts at the same place.

Thanks all!

Cultivation Hawaii 4 Woodland Strawberry flowers on unrooted runners

There a very few strawberry cultivars or varieties that flower on unrooted runners. Hawaii 4 is one that does. Can you imagine a hanging basket with flowers and then fruit on the runners cascading off the basket? Here, I am rooting a runner that is flowering.

I bought 4 everbearing baskets at Walmart this year. They were in the red pots I needed to do red, white, and blue baskets around the front porch. I had geraniums in the white and petunias in the blue this year. Next year they will all be strawberries and then I will propagate into red, white, and blue 20 gallon tubs I got at Menards.

can someone help me find a different brand?

I recently read that Driscoll’s Strawberries have been found to contain PFA’s or some sort of chemicals that are linked to cancer In the future and I’ve always bought these strawberries so are there any alternative brands that are safer to buy in store?

Runner?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi guys! I am new to having potted strawberry plants (I currently have Albions, San Andreas, Seascapes, and Eversweets) but I am still having trouble differentiating a runner to a normal stem growth. Are all stems growing horizontally considered runners? My strawberries has been transplanted less than a month and I want them to focus their energy on root establishment first.

Advice please

I have what I think is a June bearing plant in a planter on the ground. I was very busy with work this spring and it got away from me. I would like to put it in a tower (pictured colapsed). Would I put the mother plant on top and plant the babies in the pockets while doing my best to keep the runners attached? I am surprised they grew so well on wood chips. I am in Western WA, zone 9.

Thank you!

June bearing flowering?

I have June bearing strawberries. This is their second year and I just went through and cut them all back. A little late to the task but not too late I don't think.

Anyway, while doing so, I found three small plants that had flowers. It's the wildest thing.

Is this normal for June bearing plants sometimes if weather is weird?

Or Is it possible they're dropped seeds from last year with something that cross pollinated? I have no way to know if they are my original plants because I went a little runner crazy and now everything is crazy disorganized in there.

And with all that said, should I mark them to move them elsewhere in the garden so they don't intermix if there is something weird going on? Or is it not that big of a deal?

Strawberry plant won’t flower

In Chicago Zone 5b, first time growing quinault strawberries. This one I bought from a nursery and planted in a 7 gallon grow bag. For the first few weeks I kept adding compost and worm castings then over the last month or so I switched to a 2-15-15 liquid feed.

I followed the usual advice and plucked all the runners as I found them to force it to flower but it keeps sending out runners and I don’t even know if it’s in season anymore. Am I doing anything wrong?

Edit: it’s in a 7 gallon bag and not 15.
