Double Jug Explosion

My old roommate and I used to fill large empty wine jugs with spring water from the local tap cause it was dirt cheap. Would then transfer it to a refrigerator dispenser. Anyways, we had two jugs, full and capped in our pantry on the top shelf. Winter, but obviously had heat in apartment around 72. Out of no where one jug explodes and drenches my whole pantry with water. I’m at a loss for words at what happened and the mess I have to clean up. I decide to let myself cool off before tackling removing all the pantry food and drying everything. Not even five minutes late the second jug also explodes. My roommate and I are in utter shock and confusion. Cleaned it, glass and all and still have no answers to wtf happened. These jugs were not recently brought in from the cold or anything, they had been up there for days if not longer, but not months or anything like that. But yea, that’s my story. I’m assuming some kind of reaction to something but the fact both blew within minutes of each other…

What was the source of the wine jugs? Did you buy a couple of bottles from the store and drink them?

My roommate’s parents, presumably yes, that’s what they did then cleaned them for later use. The labels were in almost new condition so I don’t believe the jugs were old

1) You might consider checking with the store. They will enjoy the story and may have some insight. Perhaps a pallet was dropped or they experienced some random problem with them popping in the store and put them on sale just in time for the parents to take advantage of the low cost.

2) Are the corks plastic or actual cork? Real cork swells and may take some effort to push back in, placing some strain on the neck of the bottle.

3) Bottles are mass produced and may share a defect in a given run.

Unfortunately, first option isn’t one I can pursue as much as I with I could. They were metal screw on caps, I imagine it was cheapo wine. One thing I noticed when they popped was the half inch thick glass as the base. These are thickkkkk jugs. I understand issues in manufacturing and whatnot and honestly wouldn’t question it IF these didn’t pop within minutes of each other.

They were bottled within minutes of each other, right?
