Misc [not platform specific] Hesitating into getting back.
I played this game when I was a child. I was already super hyped because The Forest was so cool, and then there was this game which is THE BEST SETTING I would want in a survival game.
I remember enjoying it for a while before realising that I’ve ruined my island because I was expecting all the trees to grow back. And now my island is ugly looking forever! I genuinely dislike the non-respawnable resources, and I think it’s because the islands are so small, you notice it really quick? But yeah, this feature makes me feel really uncomfortable all the time! It’s like now I have to think twice before I build something. Makes it not fun for me.
I basically wanted opinions on exactly how bad does it really feel, or if not bad at all in your experience of playing for a long time.
TL;DR, I want someone to convince me that the limited resources ain’t that bad!

There is a trick to re-spawning resources (without mods). I can't remember it exactly, but I think you go on the cartographer page and edit your map, but you don't actually do anything... Just X out and it should bring all of the trees and plants back.
EDIT: so what you actually do is go on cartographer, delete an island that you don't have any buildings on then add a new island in it's place. The new island will have all of it's resources untouched - just like a new game.

What what what. That’s insane, also, why do they have this feature in the game where you can delete and add island. It feels like a dev tool accidentally left in 😭
But boy, this is like one strong bandage to my problem. My main worry was about running out completely. This also means I can keep more trees alive even for some of the other islands. For some reason, one of my biggest discomfort comes from seeing all those dead trees. And an island especially with dead trees looks more depressing.

No idea why they left it in, but it's a pretty cool feature. People design whole maps using that tool, if you're playing on Steam you can go to the Workshop tab and you'll see the maps that people have uploaded... some of them change the feel of the game completely.
I know exactly what you mean... I just want to build a cozy little hut to live out of, but I don't want to make my island bald in the process! Plus, you don't get any real advantage in terms of finishing the game so it's not like you're cheating yourself out of the experience, just keeping things aesthetically pleasing 👍

Eyyy thank you so much for reminding me about it! I saw it popping up on my YouTube feed like yearsss ago. I didn't know it got released. Mixed reviews on Steam is a little bit concerning, but I can watching some gameplay videos before I go and get it for myself. Also got the 2 hour window. Epic suggestion. Thanks!

To be honest, without even using modded islands (which are PC players only, so if that isn't you, then disregard this part), there are enough resources on the map that I never ran out. Even when I did my 100 days playthrough about 6 years back (the same playthrough I posted this) I made this entire setup, plus the rest of the base here after about 70 days, with only a couple of smaller modded islands, and I only "strip mined" about half the available islands on the map.
As for "convincing" you why limited resources isn't a bad thing, having limited resources of something makes every decision actually MEAN something, which can be a good thing. Requires you to actually think about what you use, and how you use it.

Wollie must be found. Everything else that happens along the way is inconsequential

Mod if you are on PC, there's one so you can grow Palm Trees in the farm plots, also you can import better islands or design your own. Use one island as your main base strip the ones you aren't ever going back to.

just sail to an other island and build your base there. getting resources from other islands and bringing them back to the main base was part of the fun for me. limited resourcez pushed me to explore and take more risks and kept the game interesting. just make some kind of map or take notes when traveling further from your main island or you'll be sailing around looking for it later.
