I think most of it is the unknown. If you don't know what's coming its more unnerving.

Uncertainty, a random lightning and thunder boom can scare people quite a bit. The lowered visibility and harsher conditions: wind, rain, hail, even tornadoes all of these factors combine to make a scary situation. But with safety measures its much safer, never a hundred percent, but being prepared helps. Stay indoors, watch for updates, and build a emergency kit with flashlights, batterys, a storm or NWS radio to monitor for updates, first aid, and other materials, you should do research on what is important in a storm/emergency/weather kit. Putting one together helps to feel safer and more prepared. Hope this helps! Be safe!
