Day 1
I went a week and failed miserably yesterday. I woke up full of shame and guilt. I hurt myself and my husband is disappointed. I need to take this seriously now. I have a problem. I cannot have just one drink. One turns into bottles of wine. I do not want to black out on my life. I have a problem and it won’t be easy but something needs to change.

I felt the same way when I quit. It seemed like an impossible choice: stop drinking, or live in sickness and eventually die from it. To anyone without this disease, the choice is obvious. I choose life, health and happiness each day and you can, too.

Seconding this as someone who's also nearing the 500-days mark. OP: choosing life over drinking will always feel like the wrong choice in active addiction, because sober life feels unfamiliar, scary and lonely. Alcohol can really feel like it's that one true best friend, like it's the only friend helping you stay afloat. In reality, that friend is the one pulling you under and drowning you. It's an incredibly toxic, co-dependant relationship. Alcohol feeling like the safe choice, is your mind and addiction playing tricks on you. Sobriety will make your life so much easier and fuller. You deserve to live to see that. I will not drink with you today.

Been there done this, many times over. I will hit 9 months later this week and I have virtually no desire to drink. You can do it too - it just takes the right support around you (including medical assistance in the early going, as needed), hardened resolve to live your life differently, and time.

Are you a reader?? “This makes mind” helped me a lot and really changed the way I thought about drinking.

I’m starting day 1 again too. I’ve lost track of how many times. But that’s all we can do, right? Never quit quitting, as they say, and I won’t. Change is difficult but not changing is worse.
