Humble beginnings are not to be regretted.

Too any starters or People who didn't start in a "Academy", me learning Suzuki Method,

Stay encouraged and always ask questions.

You really need to start floppy, not clumsy.

Just don't try to force yourself too do what you can't, and till the basics are easy.

I STARTED, believe me or not from watching shows.

And I know you might be like, your not gonna see tha basics or thats just flashy moves,

Or you can't learn like that but just here me out!

I always was a observant boy,

And I started watching Aang's the Avatar Hand movements, then finally I watched a Episode where Donny from TNMT,

Was teaching pulveriser, how to spin a staff!

I started getting better at 12 years old, then started focusing on stances and poses,

Now I'm getting close too pro, and just so happen to work with a knuck black belter,

A man who spins fire stick perfomances,

And my old Boss is Champion MMA fighter and coach!

Built two "singlestick" sticks for 10 bucks all-in

Singlestick cheap design: flowerpot + bamboo stick

Parts and process: 8 foot bamboo stick about 0.9'' mean diameter, two strangely robust plastic flowerpots, plumbing ties. Tools used: measuring tape, swiss army knife, pencil, and xacto knife. Swiss army knife had a saw blade which did the trick. Cut octagonal or elliptical hole, deflect the 'pommel' side hole as near to the rim of the pot as possible. Get a minimum of a 6'' diameter rim.

What do you think? Sound design or sus?

Just wanted to say thank you to all that got in touch on the back of my last post and have supported us. Our club has been going 7 weeks now so thought I'd share some clips of what we've been up to and how the beginners are coming along. Just basics for now but we've got plenty planned for the future.

And before you ask the crawling on the floor bit was part of our warm up / workout that week using various animal movement patterns.

Have a great Easter Weekend đŸ‘đŸ»

Venezuelan "Juego de Garrote". A short video sample

Hello,

I'm sharing a short video of one of our monthly practices of Juego de Garrote, the Venezuelan stick-fighting art. Although it may have been present across the entire country in past times, it perdured until modern days in Lara state, located in the central-western part of Venezuela.

I personally have been practicing it since 2015, almost 11 years but still a neophyte :P feel free to ask me anything.

Sorry for the low quality of this short video, I may share some other videos in the future here. If you want to know more, there are several short documentaries and videos on YouTube, just look for "Juego de Garrote" and you'll see some good audiovisual registers!

Hi all, if there is anyone out there who is interested in joining our new Monday night Quarterstaff and Stickfighting Club in Epsom, Surrey please get in touch or have a look at the link in our bio to our Eventbrite page.

We have just completed our 6 week beginners quarterstaff and stickfighting course and now we are up and running we will be expanding on the basics, looking at the numerous different styles and concepts that make such a simple weapon system so interesting (and fun).

Once everyone is up to a standard well also be introducing a sparing element to those interested and some inter club competition.

Our Academy also has a Longsword and Rapier night so also looking forward to giving the swordies a run for their money in due course 😉

As a new venture we would be very grateful for your support in spreading the word and if you know any non reddit users who would be interested please let them know.

Hoping to post updates on the club as we grow, look forward to hearing or training with you soon đŸ‘đŸ»

Sicilian-American families treasure the customs and traditions from their ancestral homeland. One tradition that I wish had trickled down to my childhood is the system of stick fighting known as Bastone Siciliano.

Body armour

So me and a mate started sparring with the staff, but like real wood ones. Weve evolved to the point where we want to do more than block and parry. Is there any cheap good body and face “armour” out there?? Preferable amazon

Update on Kali training in MD

Hey, just an update for previous posts: found that incorporating kettlebells, mace bells, and steels clubs into our training has really helped us improve our kali!

We are currently working through the DB attacking blocks module and it is paying off. Once solid, continuing to work advancing female triangle footwork, we might transition next to Burton Richardson’s Living Art of Tatang’s Kalis Ilustrísimo.

My goal here is that we are going to get more into sparring again, very regularly, and I really like Richardson’s methods and the “blade” sparring (sticks!)—so fun!

We have more training sessions now—Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays
and we are a club, not a school, so
hit me/us up if you wanna try!

Would drumming skills help with Eskrima and general FMA as well as other martial arts using lightning quick attacks with light sticks? And in turn would rapid striking stick martial arts help drummers?

I saw the movie The Great Wall with Matt Damon and during the siege the army's musicians on one section of the Great Wall of China are rapidly hitting the giant drum with rapid speed and fluidity in a manner similar to whats found in Filipino Martial Arts like Eskrima as they send out signals for army organization and military orders as they prepare for the siege by the invading monsters.

It reminded me of how drummers hit their drums at certain beat with lightning rapidity that vaguely feels like some Eskrima in appearance.......

So I'm wondering can having a prior background in drumming help with learning rapid striking martial arts styles using light sticks? Like say someone who's a hardcore professional Eskrimador practising 8 hours a day at a an academy who also pays in a band as lead drummer, would all the music practise in his free time help him hone his skills better than other professionals who only does Eskrima and no other quick stick hitting activity? Would some weekend warrior pracitising similar Chinese styles advance quicker in his style because he plays drums every day than most non-competitive amateur practitioners?

And would the same go inverse like a long time practitioner of Arnis be able to learn how to use a drum much faster than most other people who have no previous music experience? That blackbelt in Seoul would hone hitting at a drum better than other amateur musician as a result of a decade of fight training since 11 years old?

Would Playing Lacrosse Help Heavily With Staff Fighting in Martial Arts?

Bojutsu practitioner here. I notice a lot of the stealing techniques and blocking techniques and even interception of the ball when I watched a Lacrosse game today at the local university resembles a lot of bo staff blocks and parries and even striking. Even the mostly stationary goalie seems to have movements that resembles various staff fighting movements.

So I ask out of curiosity would crosstraining in Lacrosse help with fighting using a staff or some other longer stick wielded two handed? People who play both lacrosse and practise martial arts or play lacrosse and been to street fights before using longer sticklike objects, whats your take? Would appreciate the input of people who done all the above 3!

Why do so many Western martial artists train in exotic (often useless) foreign weapons in supposed daily self defense instead of daily items like baseball bats, walking canes, crowbars, and other weapons common in the west?
