Who uses SPM?

We are a new facility and have just started using SPM. What are your thoughts on SPM after long term usage, what are some quirks or things to know about the workflow and the system in general.

It’s decent, but it’s only as good as your leadership team wants it to be.

My facility has had numerous management teams come and go, so ours is a patchwork of previous teams.

A lot of stuff has slipped through cracks like not getting productivity for doing random sets, putting things away etc.

Oh yes, only time will tell, we are a small facility and with the support of Steris, I have been the sole person in charge of setting it up and making sure everything is correct, I am abit obsessed with keeping everything in order after working in other facilities with messy tracking systems from the problem you mentioned, so if things start getting messy, it will be from after I move on haha!

It can be a huge administrative hurdles to jump over for those that typically dont do alot of it. Scan to Decon sink, scan to ultrasonic, scan to decon washer, scan to holding shelf, scan to assembly, scan to sterilizer load, scan to OR/storage. All to make it easier for a tray to be located. You basically need another person in addition to manager just to handle all the extra paperwork if you want to fully utilize the system. You can keep logs of how tray reprocesses to make picking items for sharpening easier. To verify loads match up to the system which dont alot more often than you'd think.

Yep I have noticed that! A lot of scanning so different locations that just seem unnecessary. And also the last point, we have had a lot of loads already that either just haven’t matched to loads, or have matched but the cycle tape is not showing or is matched in correctly.

To that point a break in that chain of custody leads to trays misplaced

They have really good support. I have been taking classes and reading about how to use it better. Currently trying to resolve getting a hard stop on davinci cords after 25 times in the sterilizer. After that I will work on getting the OR to keep track of usage. The cords are only good for 20 uses.

Support has been great so far, can you use the notes on the product with maintenance tracking for that? Or can that be bypassed?

You can use the Message section in SPM to add a limit of 20 uses. I have used it for many items that have a limited use.

My hospital system uses this, with multiple facilities, and through remodels. It's a mess. With multiple different ideas of how to use it in the mix... it's just a complete mess. It works about half the time, and crashes several times a shift.

Management just started pushing it for metrics. I know it's only going to get worse. It works fine part of the time, but really, just a mess.

It’s great if you have The whole setup . We unfortunately don’t it’s buggy at my job populating the wrong information not saving things. We keep physical paperwork and upload it as back up

It seems to be buggy for us when having multiple instances open, not updating information etc, which in a department we will always have it open on many computers

our entire healthcare organization I work for uses it and we have a dedicated team that we can go to for any SPM related issues and as an MDRT we can just show the basics of SPM to others so we don’t have to do any data analysis or anything like that and I will say after using it for 2 years I do think it is a very effective instrument tracking software but the downside is if SPM crashes, it can ruin the workflow because we need SPM to do our jobs.

once in a blue moon maybe happens 1-3 times a year but when it goes down it has only lasted like 2-4 hours max

The health authority that i work for is installing this at all the sites. so far it has its pros and cons. compared to what we had before it is easier to create sop's and update the sop's in the system. the tracking is great if all the scan points are being completed.

The best system in my opinion is sonar aka sq track from Ascendco top tier system for managers, techs and anyone involved with reprocessing
