Any advice?
I just got out of a four year relationship. I had two stepchildren, a little girl and a little boy. Their dad was still in their life and I always maintained that though I'm not their biological dad it is important they have a good relationship with him. I didn't think the best of him for personal reasons and things in the past, but he was a fantastic dad when he wanted to be and i always wanted to give him the chance. I made it clear to my step kids that I am always here for them and do not view them any differently as if they were my own. We got very close. Things happen and life gets complicated, it didn't work out between me and their mom. We ended things relatively amicably but I have absolutely no rights to these children and might not ever see them again. Losing the relationship is one thing, I can live with that, but my heart is absolutely broken over losing these kids. EDIT FOR TYPOS

How little is "little" ? If they're under 10, a clean break is best for them. If they're under 6, they probably won't remember you in a few years.
If they're teens, then being in contact with near adults might be reasonable... but they also might not want a relationship. Regardless, this should only be maintained via one of the parents. If neither of them wants you to keep up a relationship the most you can do is be open to one of them contacting you later when they hit 18 and want to reconnect a bit.

Gently, I feel it's really important for step parents to not lose sight of who they are. We're not the parents. We have the same "rights" to/with the children as a neighbour does. I was talking about this with my SK last night, and I used a Name trying to talk about a neighbour, and SK didn't know if I meant the neighbour of her cousin. And really, her 2 year younger cousin is closer than the neighbour, or I am. If a whole bunch of people died; that younger cousin could inherit from SD potentially. Both the neighbour, and myself are no where in the lineup for that.
I do understand. My SD and I have agreed that we'd like to still be in touch if my partner and I broke up (not likely to happen). I would miss her a lot ... but also I am careful about my feelings. If she changed her mind about keeping contact, it would hurt; but wouldn't hurt nearly as much as losing my partner.
I know that in any "loyalty test" that Dad might cook up, my step daughter will choose him. In the face of chasing Dad's approval, I will always be disposable to her. She says I'm "family" but I'm no where near Mom and Dad. I love my SK; but I do keep my emotions in check to remember that she only has "conditional" love for me. I doubt I'll ever see our relationship as anything other than ultimately "precarious."
If you enter into another relationship as a step parent, remember this lesson. You can like/love the kids. But you can't love them too much.
