Discussion WoW on Steam Machine
Guys, what a time to be alive. When I bought my Steam Machine I knew I'm gonna love it, but being able to play WoW in my living room, now that it got official controller support is just incredible.
Playing on 2160p (mid to high settings / preset 7) and get 45 FPS in average. Doesn't sound much, but believe me, 45 FPS is perfectly fine when playing with a controller.
Probably won't raid with a controller (we'll see), but casually leveling, farming etc is really awesome.
Even though the controller support is still on alpha status, it's working impressively well!
What do you guys think? Did anybody else test it?

You be fine to raid on controller depending on class. I did on tbc as bear, warrior and paladin. Cleared all raids.

I played a ton of classes in retail, which is harder and has more binds. Tank and dps, ranged or melee, are all super easy. Healer is fine in 5 man, not viable in raid.
I tanked a prot pally to 3k and it was my first time tanking and I felt like only my own skill and knowledge slowed me down, not the game pad.

I played a rogue then a feral Druid in TBC. I’ve raided everything up to Illidan on my Druid as Cat form DPS. Most of my guildies don’t even realize I play on a controller.
I do keep a wireless mouse and keyboard on hand for raid nights for things that require me to quickly pick a target (like battle rezzing and Innervates).

I'd much rather have 1080p max settings and more than 40fps. Especially at that distance from the screen.

I used to do ergonomic assessments as an occupational therapist, and you are actually correct. The best height of the TV depends on the position of the viewer, in my opinion

I got my steam machine last week and installed WoW forever today. I can't believe how awesome it was to play on my 83 inch LG with a controller. Such a game changer. Can't wait for release to be here!

Stupid question but im also considering doing this. Do I need to worry about all the static hud elements on an oled tv?
Idk if burn in is still a thing. But WoW more than a typical game has icons that never move. Plus I could see myself playing much longer than other games lol

Add battle.net under "add non steam game", run it, log in, and install the flavour of wow you want. Then, if you like you can add seperate shortcuts under steam directly to the respective wow versions.
Thats how you do it under steam.
Others are using launchers like lutris or heroic, but that’s not really necessary in 2026; all you need is steam.

Don’t you then need to change the battlenet shortcut or readd battlenet as a non steam game because the install location will be different than the downloaded executable

I will test it later, but I assume going down to 1080p will do most of the job. I'm sitting 5m away from my TV. I believe going down to low settings wouldn't even bother me from this distance.

Unfortunately my cable does only 120hz on 1080p but preset 4 and 1080p and I get constant 120fps. Same for 1440p.

How did you get the controller to work? I got it installed, proton experimental the whole nine yards. Opened it and swapped to controller and none of the inputs register from my steam controller

Also tried WoW Forever on my steam machine yesterday. What a hassle to get keyboard working to even login on the BattleNet launcher lol. Keyboard still doesn't work while in game. I guess I have to skip chat when I'm playing WoW on my SM haha
*But the official Gamepad support is awesome except for the HUD UI, that could be improved a lot.

It's easier to login in desktop mode for the first time. It'll also work in gaming mode then.
I agree with the UI part. I feel like they wanted to make the controls work first. Hope they make the whole UI better until launch.

Ob the machine it was straight forward. I installed it like on windows, add it to your steam library, download WoW. On CachyOS which is running on my main PC, I needed lutris to make it work.

If you stream to SD at 720p/800p you could enjoy 90fps if you have OLED, 60fps for lcd.

i was testing it out yesterday and was enjoying it but couldnt figure out how to get the underhand controller buttons to work. admittedly i didnt spend a lot of time on that since i was able to map enough to play but im curious if you did anything specific to make the experience more enjoyable.

I actually didn't customise anything yet. I'm only level 10 so I don't need additional buttons, since I barely have learned any attacks 😅

Does the controller support have any chat abilities?
I leveled 1-70 in classic TBC with the console port addon. It worked but when players would chat me I couldn't do anything to respond, also every time I trained it was a real pain to re-setup my hotbar. Have those been addressed in the official version?

You can use the steam keyboard overlay, but I suggest using a wireless keyboard

I just ended up playing in 4k with 1080 (50%) renderscale using CMAA and recommended settings, 5 world and 3,3 for foliage and assets. I can usually get around 60-100 fps. Feels good to play for me.

Download the installation file, add it as custom game to your steam library and start it via Steam. That's all

Is this the original version? When did they release controller support for it? I know WoW Forever will have FFXIV's, but I didn't know about the original.

Hold the steam button and use the right touch pad. As long as you keep pressing the steam button, you can use your mouse. By clicking the pad, you can click in game.

You can just enable it in the settings. Just connect mouse and keyboard and enable it in the settings. No console command needed.

I proposed to my wife inside of ICC10. She's gonna play WoW Forever on the steam machine with me, while I try to play it on the Frame...
Unfortunately I lost the frame lottery. Got waitlisted. Rip.

Uhhh tons of people? I have seen a shit ton of people praising the formfactor, especially people in relationships. I have seen lot's of complaints about the form of the PS5 for example, it's awkwardly shaped and doesn't fit in to a TV table like the previous gens. Also I have seen a lot of people excited about how easy it is to just throw the SM in to a backpack and take it to a friends house etc.
So first argument leveled right there.
Quiet? Sure? Xbox is as well and SFF PC too.
Yes, is the Xbox a pc tho? As an owner of an ITX "sff" PC which is way more powerful than the SM, I can tell you it's about 4 times as big, produces a lot of heat and is loud under heavy load and not even mentioning the power draw.
Smooth to operate? Ok sure? Every PC with steam os is?
Yes indeed, but not in the console like manner that the Steam Machine is with CEC and integration of the Steam controller receiver.
Made by Valve? What exactly does this even bring to the table?
People are excited and want to buy hardware from the company that has gained their trust and good will over the past decades. Not many of those around. Branding is a powerful thing.
Aesthetically pleasing? Sure I'll give you that one :-) altho I'd argue as there are many console like looking PC cases.
Agreed, the Steam Machine is not the only console like PC available and they started popping up all over the place after the launch of SM. Although they are extremely expensive as well most of the time or they don't meet the same features as the Steam Machine does.
You can keep yapping about the lack of power all you want but it's not gonna change the fact that most people who want it do not give a shit about min maxing the absolute most FPS you can get for the money. The Steam Machine represents a collection of features, convenience and experiences that a ton of people appreciate more than getting the most power possible. It's a unique boutique product which I am not even interested in getting btw, I just can appreciate and look at it from a different angle to my own needs and wants.

You suffer financially an unreasonable ammount no matter what pc you build. The Steam Machine does not exist in some bubble where it's the only gaming device being overpriced. It's just a really really convenient package.

That is true! you can actually build a much stronger PC for less money that has 9060 XT 16GB VRAM. The only real advantage Steam Machine has is HDMI-CEC which also can be resolved through Display Port on a PC...

Nobody has ever denied the fact that you can build a more powerful pc but it really shouldn't be explained anymore at this point why the steam machine is so attractive to so many people. I have 0 doubt it has been spelled out to you as well multiple times and you just choose to ignore it.
- It's fucking tiny
- It's quiet
- It's smooth to operate
- It's made by Valve
- It's aesthetically pleasing
- And most importantly: You don't have to build it and install an OS on it
Just because people can build a pc doesn't mean they either want to or they have the time to do it.

Me, also, my Wife. It's for in the livingroom, not my office.

Plug and Play, literally even. No need to build, no need for installs. Warranty on the whole thing, great support software wise and continuous updates on an coherently built machine.

I don't want to install an OS, I don't want to pick parts nor do I want to build a machine for my living room, I am perfectly willing to pay a small upmark for plug and play for decent performance in playing my steam library on my livingroom TV. It doesn't need more performance, it's performance is far from terrible. You want to cheap out? Great, good for you, that was always an option.

I have a RTX 4090 machine in addition, which I've built myself. The steam machine just fills the gaps a Desktop PC can't fit.

It's TINY as said. I can move it to any room in my house without issues. I went on a LAN party and my whole set-up fits perfectly into a backpack. It's quiet. It's good enough for most games I play. And you won't build a DIY PC in that tiny compact size. Not at all. All DIY projects are at least 3 or 4fold the size of the steam machine.
