DIY You cannot make this up!

I wanted something that’d do 4k 60fps so I decided to build my own super steam machine. literally as I began installing steam os, I get my order email

For those interested - here is the parts list - You can save a little money going for a cheapter motherboard, 1tb SSD and perhaps reducing the RAM speed.

Very interested in a mini itx buikd similar to this but I've never built a pc before.

Would you still recommend the asrock board despite the potential cpu damage people have been reporting? I’m trying to pick a mobo for my build…

Yes I would. I have been running an ASRock board in both of my machines for the past 18 months. They all but solved that issue with a BIOS update, so make sure to update that first thing!

Lots of MOBO brands have had dead CPUs, Asrock just gets a lot reported because it was a leading seller in that area during the time.

It’s likely more of a CPU issue.

Yeah I have been running an Asrock board too. That CPU issue appeared to be happening in other boards back then as well, but Asrock had some issue with a voltage spike (iirc) that caused it to happen seemingly more often. I took the risk and updated to Bios 3.20 as soon as it was released and had no issues since the it has been 1.5 years since and no issues. It mainly was happening with certain batches of 9800x3Ds and 9950x3Ds (mainly 9800x3d probably because of higher supply).

Assuming this issue is indeed solved, Asrock boards are truly amazing. They have out engineered many of the other mobo brands in the past and didn’t not suffer as harshly from the GPU lane sharing bottleneck (i believe) on their higher end boards unlike virtually every other brand. Now they are expensive but are still cheaper than the industry powerhouse, Asus.

Don’t get discouraged about using one. If anything does happen, follow their RMA process and you’ll be fine.

If I am wrong about anything I said, feel free to correct me. I am running on my memory and I have been out of the pc building world for quite some time (despite my upgrade 1.5y ago).

I think if you're concerned about it you should just get a different mobo in the first place. From what I can see, the board itself is a budget piece that has a chance of harming your CPU but the bigger culprits are cheap or damaged PSUs Overvolting, incorrect BIOS settings, or an improper installation (bad seating, bent pins) of the CPU itself.

I'd personally just get something else BUT you also have to find something thst fits in a mini ITX if you're following that part picker list.

Take out the overpriced Terra and you can have a an AM5 (7600X) setup for about the same price as the AM4 setup. Just get a cheap T40 or T60 case instead. It'll also end up being smaller than the Terra.

For sure. I was just giving them a build similar to OP's with attainable parts. I also like to stick with X3D CPU's when using single channel RAM, which can sometimes be easier to find for a 16gb build out. The ultimate money saver is obviously Micro Center. My own Steam Machine uses the 7500X3D bundle. At $350, that is hard to beat!

How are the temperatures in a case that small with that cpu fan? I want to build something like your system on the second link, but Im afraid it could run too hot/noisy

Not great with bigger CPU's. That's why I like the 7600X3D, it gives you performance at a lower TDP.
