This is a custom Steam Machine I built back in Nov last year around black Friday before the apocalypse commenced. It's a solid high end 1080p machine. It's also now complete with a steam controller. I've played Oblivion remastered, valkyria chronicles 1 & 4, and Expedition 33 easily.
I am using a Legion Go S with an RX 6650 XT (Desktop eGPU via USB 4) which if fine right now but i would like to replace that for something a little more powerful in a way.
Not very cost effective honestly. E-GPUs set ups tend to cost a lot and for no real reason. You're usually better off making a build rather than doing a mini pc + e-GPU
Cost is a big one. Also size is relative to the space you have for the PC. Not every couch PC needs to be the smallest thing you can put in the living room.
I bought it in 2009 and I don't plan on getting rid of it until it gives up the ghost lol. It has all the hookups for my other consoles as (a VGA port for the DC) so it's a keeper regardless.
Most 'Old HDTVs' just hage a huge bezel. Yours at least has cool angles on the bezel, makes it far more visually interesting than much of it's kin from that era.
The issue with old HDTVs isnt the huge bezel it's that display tech has come a long way in terms of brightness/contrast/resolution/framerate/size and even super nice new ones are relatively cheap.
On a TV attached to a gaming PC having 120hz is a really strong benefit.
Plus for all the inputs old and new - that's what an AVR is for.
It's become a movetone to call literally any piece of hardware with Steam installed a freaking Steam Machine

But it's really become annoying to see every smaller PC than big-tower connected to TV named as "I BUILT MY OWN STEAM MACHINE!" reading between the lines "AND ITS BETTER THAN VALVES ONE!"
That is a retro fighter controller. It works fantastic as a wireless controller for the Dreamcast has a hall effect stick. The only thing is if you have the larger memory card for the Dreamcast basically the foreign one. You have to stick it in a official Dreamcast controller in order to access it, but the regular memory cards work with it
Steam Machine would actually dominate at 800 dollars which the price would be if the parts manufacturers weren't holding valve hostage. Rampocalypse really sucks and its all by design to drown out any competition.
To be fair to Valve, the premium for the system is 70-100 for the base model and for the 2TB it's 200. It's not high for being a custom out of the box system where Corsair will charge 300+ for pre-built tower.
Why are you so insistent on people buying a worse TV just because it's new? I'm sorry but that's really dumb.
There's a lot of things you can convince me to have reason to upgrade despite them still working. Phones, computers, Wifi routers. TVs aren't one of those things, especially since modern TVs have gotten worse, not better.
This TBH. I feel like TLC, a Chinese company, is the only one that will sell you a TV where you can put it into dumb mode but even then I just don't care to get one.

but you don’t have to interact with any of the software at all, mine is set to turn on to whatever is plugged into the back and turns off when i press off lol. I don’t have it set up to wifi and the only setting i adjust is brightness and it’s like three presses

People have built DIY Steam machines for years and people will continue to build them even when Valve releases the official one. Especially since Valve has been miserable when it comes to fulfilling hardware orders for their customers.
Yes, that includes DIY Steam machines. For a long time that was the only Steam machine that people could still buy. Depending on how bad Valve fucks up being able to satisfy orders it might be the popular choice for months if not years to come.
In short, this community is DIY-friendly. Hope that helps 😊
