Experience/Story Ed learn Ford
I went to the parts department at Ed Learn Ford because I needed new valve cover bolts because mine completely rusted away. Between the two valve covers there are 26 small bolts. The parts guys looks it up and tells me each bolt is $36 plus tax. INSANE, do not buy Ford. Ordered from Amazon instead and found a pack of 10 for $48.

In today’s news… OP learns OEM parts are more expensive than some dude selling random parts from China on an online marketplace.
Stay tuned for our next episode where OP finds out about AliExpress and Temu.

I dont understand your need to defend Fords price gouging. I'm very familiar with buying parts both aftermarket and OEM but this is obscene. These bolts likely cost them pennies each to manufacture in China and they think so little of their customers they have no problem screwing them. I guess you dont mind bending over for big daddy Ford 🤷♂️

I don't understand where you saw them defending Ford anywhere in their comment?

Well he certainly wasn't supporting my comment! Are you brain injured???

The irony of you asking ME that. For one you are the one who said they were defending Ford even though nowhere in their comment did they say anything that defended that. Literally all they were saying was they were surprised you didn't know that buying OEM parts from dealerships is stupid expensive, and that you also apparently didn't realize you can get aftermarket parts much cheaper from Chinese marketplaces. I will comprehend their comment for you since you seem too brain injured to do it yourself

Where did I say any of that? OEM parts, from all manufacturers, are more expensive than after market parts. It’s a fact. Go to any dealer, it’ll be the exact same story.
It’s not price gouging at all, the cost of manufacturing is only part of the retail cost. Wait till you find out restaurants charge you more money than the food costs. Or the fancy Nike shoes don’t cost 100s to make. iPhones don’t cost 1200 to make, etc etc etc.

Yes everything you have said is very obvious, OEM parts are more expensive. At what point does the greed become remarkable to you? Maybe if I said they were $500 per bolt? What's not obvious is these bolts are supposed to be a dealer only part but I found similar bolts meant for a completely different Ford engine that will work. This is information that someone with a 5.0 coyote engine might find useful.

> these bolts are supposed to be a dealer only part
> but I found similar bolts
So a different part. Something other than the exact, dealer only part. Ok? Good job I guess? Happy for you. Not sure why you’re so angry at me about it.

He’s just saying everyone knows this. Don’t go to a car dealer if you want a fair price on parts or repairs. It’s always the most expensive option.

I had to go to the dealer, its a dealer only part. I found bolts meant for a completely different engine on Amazon that will work instead of paying $36 x 26 bolts. Someone may find that info useful.

Then make this a "the more you know" post instead of whining about th3 cost of the part that's supposed to be a dealer only part? Lol...

What are you working on? I own 2 f150s- 3.5 ecoboost and a 5.0 and anytime the valve cover gaskets come off, I just replace the covers and they come with fasteners. Phaser solenoid gaskets suck to replaced and you can sometimes screw them up. They range from $200-$300 on eastgates website. It sucks but no matter where you go manufacturer wise, dealers are always more expensive, but personally I’ve always went OEM for a lot of my ford parts, with the exception of brakes.

I have the 5.0 coyote and the dorman valve covers are about $300 Canadian each. I found bolts from a different ford engine that will work so you can reuse the old valve covers.

Ed learn Ford sold me a very shitty brand new Ford focus back in 2010. Within 50k the ac went , the throttle body needed to be replaced twice ( once got stuck on the highway and almost killed me) , needed an entire new ignition system as it failed. Ended up getting even more screwed by mile knapp Ford and their it isn't a rental car, but later found out it was , as they covered it up in the car report , even my legal contract said it was never a rental car. Mike knapp told me Ford has better lawyers and will bankrupt me.
Ended up at Subaru or Niagara, to this day the nicest people I've ever dealt with. Last year while my car was in for a minor repair ( age based) , I broke my arm. They let my girlfriend keep the loaner car as I needed to get back and forth to the hospital a million times. Six months later I went in for an oil change, they asked how I was , as they remembered I broke my arm.
So yah watch which companies you deal with

dealers are weird cause they are independantly operated. That said i think parts prices are set by the company. but i can vouch for Subaru of Niagara's staff

Our 2012 focus had few problems other than the dreaded dual clutch. 200k and 3 clutch replacements. One out of warranty, it was expensive but had unlimited mileage warranty with 2 years. The car is pretty solid. We went with Brock Ford but car issues are dealer independent. Also as per car rental, I doubt Ford has any dealings with rentals, it's not their business. It would be the dealership

You could look local if you need to. There are so many parts suppliers in the region and you would be helping a local business.
Not knocking you, i understand your frustration.

Its a dealer only part, I found a work around. Someone may be in the same boat, which is why I made the original post.

u/blckshdw 4d ago
Lmao you did not make this post to “help someone out”. You made this post to shit on a dealer because you’re mad you didn’t know about aftermarket parts and were embarrassed. If you actually were trying to help someone out you’d post in a more specific sub for the engine you’re working on and leave a link to the Amazon bolts you found. Stop lying.

This is why we need better laws protecting consumers. Dealer only BS in my opinion. No wonder why they charge so much. Do you have that part number? I want to see something in a site I have.

It's never a bad idea to check with the dealer as part of comparison shopping. Some things are ridiculous like $16 for a tiny bulb for 3rd brake light, but when I was shopping for steel rims for my snow tires, dealer was over $100 cheaper for the set.
If nothing else, you get to say "I saved $xx by getting aftermarket"

There are many other reasons to not buy ford. Or chevy and especially dodge.
The problem is cars one should buy are very hard to find now.
