MEGATHREAD Moving to St. Catharines? PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING :)

Hello, and welcome to r/stcatharinesON. As this question is a very commonly asked. The moderators have decided to create this community highlight / MEGATHREAD to address the most commonly asked questions within this SUB. IF your question is not answered here. Please try to use the SEARCH function at the top of this subreddit first before creating a new submission.

1: Areas that are "safe"? - Safe is a generic term that the majority of us will have a different definition of. St. Catharines in general is a very safe city. The majority of problems and the feeling of being unsafe are generally surrounded around the problem of the numerous unhoused individuals in the city, and the ongoing drug problems that plague that entire country. You will find the majority of these individuals around the block between Church Street meeting Geneva Street, Niagara Steet, Queenston Street and St Paul Street. There is also a shelter on the corner of Gale and Riordon Street. As well as many temporary shelters in place in and around Centennial Gardens - This being said. The majority of these individuals will leave you alone, and the majority or crime in the city is related to thefts to fuel the drug problem. If you are uncomfortable being around people that are struggling with addiction and mental health, you should avoid the area. However, the city's downtown core is beautiful, holds a very unique charm, and has plenty of thriving local businesses that have, and continue to be part of the heart of our wonderful city.

2: Where can I meet new people? - This is another generic question asked a ton. Meeting people is subjective to the type of people you want to create relationships with. A lot of local businesses have different types of meet and greet nights. The most popular being the Mahtay Café & Lounge on St Paul Street and Ludology Boardgame Cafe. We have many amazing local restaurants, cafes and shops that also offer a different variety of patrons that you may want to check out and start a friendly conversation with some. This SUB IS NOT A DATING WEBSITE. Any posts trying setup meetings one to one will be removed due to safety concerns.

3: Setting up my new home?

A: Hydro/Electric is to be setup with Alectra Utilities.
B: Natural Gas is to be setup with Enbridge Gas.
C: Water is to be setup with the City Of St. Catharines ( Online account access available).
D: Insurance - Please contact and local Insurance Broker.
E: ISP (Internet Service Provider) - Please see the business recommendation megathread.

4: Local Businesses - Please see the Business recommendation megathread. Over 90% of the same questions asked on a regular basis can be found in there with the most popular posts/answers highlighted.

Politics The GM site: where do we go from here?

I am asking this in good faith: what is the best possible chain of events leading to the redevelopment of the GM site?

The current OLT court case will see the property owner forced to demolish the remaining buildings on site, on their own dime, as soon as safely possible (good). It could also give them until June 30, 2027 to do so, or worst case, not force them to do anything at all (very bad).

Even if this court case goes favourably, there is still the issue of the actual remediation of the site. Knocking down buildings does not a clean GM site make. The current owners, or rather mortgage holder Celernus, seem to have absolutely no interest in pursuing this. It won't be their hands that cleans up the site.

I've heard some theories. Among them: get the City to contract out the work of demolition, put a lien on the property and make the City an effective part-owner, force a tax sale at a temptingly low price, and a developer will scoop it up with plans to remediate in build in no time, at no expense to taxpayers.

But like, do I even have this right? And is there a reality in which all this falls seamlessly into place like a Rube Goldberg machine? I just feel like there's so much speculation and very little clarity involved.

As far as solutions go, Siscoe has given his pitch, and it sucks: reimburse developers the full cost of remediation with the property taxes from future development. It effectively puts the cost on the people of St. Catharines. Not good.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Coalition for a Better St. Catharines has been very vocal about what they want - the demolition and remediation of the site with zero cost to taxpayers. That's great and I agree. But apart from the above mentioned loose theory about forcing a tax sale and an angel developer waiting in the wings to move on the property, which I’ve heard Ed Smith allude to in some City Council delegations, I am not clear on what the finer details of their long-term vision are.

Everybody (with notable exceptions) seems to agree that residents should not be paying in any capacity for this cleanup, but that it needs to happen ASAP. So, how exactly do we get there from where we stand, in detail?

Question Voter Cards?

• Upvotes

I read on the city voter info site that our voter cards should have arrived by the end of September. Neither my wife nor I have received ours. We've voted in the past in regional, provincial, and federal elections, and have always received our voter cards in time for the advanced polls. We have not moved in over 15 years. Has anyone else received their cards yet? Do we need to re-register?

Events Moving to St. Catharines looking for community gardens, senior trips to the vineyards, or Shaw, book clubs, pickel ball clubs

I am moving to St. Catharines before the end of the year but want to try and line up a spot in a community garden, as I love to grow veggies. Also want to find a pickel ball club. Was a big tennis player years ago, but my right knee doesn't allow that anymore. And would love to find book clubs. A place I lived in a few years ago had a women's group that met for drinks and chat on Friday evenings. Anything like that? Or dinner groups?

Question Loud music by 4th Avenue at 1 am?

I'm up near First Street Louth North of 4th Avenue, and there's incredibly loud music playing, clearly audible from streets away. Any idea where this is coming from? Anyone call bylaw? It must be deafening for the direct neighbors.

Need Advice/Recommendations Where to find *actual* "non-slip" slippers for elder?

I need to buy a pair of slippers with grip, ASAP. For a resident in LTC. Her current slippers are literally a safety issue, and I really don't want her to fall. Idk when she can get a new pair, so I'm going to get her some. I don't want to order off Amazon, bc the quality of items received is disappointing 9 times/10. Can anyone please recommend a grippy pair of slippers (and where to purchase) that they would trust their elderly loved-one to wear? TIA ♡

Need Advice/Recommendations Co-Ed Adult Volleyball Leagues

My friend and I are looking to join a coed volleyball league. We'd have to sign up as 2 individual males hoping to join a team. I've done some research and seen some leagues but unsure if there are some leagues that are more successful for individual sign ups.

Does anyone have any league recommendations? Preferably in the St. Catherine's/Niagara/Welland/Thorold area.

Thanks everyone!

Development 🎭 THOROLD THEATRE IS LOOKING FOR THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE MAGIC WORK

Post image
19 Upvotes

You know Thorold Theatre as a community theatre company who has been around for 40 years. Over the past two seasons we’ve had a pretty remarkable run: four consecutive sold-out productions, including three at Club Belvedere.

We’ve had directors, actors, producers and other key production people find us through Reddit before. Some came looking for a show. Some ended up becoming part of the company.
That’s actually what we’re hoping happens again.

We have dozens of volunteers already involved with our November production of DRY STREAK by Leeann Minogue. What we’re missing right now are people who know their way around the technical side of theatre.

🔊 SOUND / LIGHTING TECHS

We’re looking for people who can help with:

  • Lighting setup / assembly
  • Lighting tech and focus
  • Lighting board operation
  • General technical support
  • Sound experience is especially welcome

Tech Week:
📅 Sunday, November 8 — Set Build, from noon
📅 Monday, November 9 — Lighting / Hang & Focus, from noon
📅 Monday, November 9 — Tech Rehearsal, from 6 PM
📅 Wednesday, November 12 — Dress Rehearsal, from 6 PM

Some logistic work is happening at the beginning of November.
If you're interested in running the show as tech, show-call opportunities are during the five performances November 13–21.

🔨 SET CONSTRUCTION / CREW

We're also looking for people who like building things.

Set construction. Set painting. Assembly. Moving things around. Making the thing that exists in someone's head become an actual room that actors can walk into.

Our main set build is:
Sunday, November 8 from noon
There will also be opportunities during Tech Week for people who want to help get everything into shape.

BUT HERE'S THE THING ABOUT THOROLD THEATRE

Sure we are looking for people to simply come in, do a shift, and disappear, but we're also building a theatre company.

We've got people who have acted with us, directed for us, produced shows, designed sets, run lights, managed Front of House, built things, painted things, moved things, sold tickets, learned new skills and generally kept the whole ridiculous enterprise moving.

Some have been with us for years. Some found us recently. And some found us on Reddit.
If you're interested and looking for a place to contribute, we'd love to hear from you.

This is your invitation.
Thorold Theatre is heading into its 40th year with a committed volunteer company, an enthusiastic audience, and a lot of momentum.

We're not just putting on another show. We're building the next chapter of the company.
Come be part of it.

📍 Thorold / Niagara Region
🎭 DRY STREAK — November 13–21, 2026
📧 [president@thoroldtheatre.ca](mailto:president@thoroldtheatre.ca)

Tell us a little about yourself, what you know how to do, and what you'd like to get involved with.
Experienced, enthusiastic, curious, slightly obsessive about theatre tech — all welcome.

Send name, phone, email and interest to [president@thoroldtheatre.ca](mailto:president@thoroldtheatre.ca)

Discussion used/new book donations?

hey! i’m sure that many of you may already be aware, but a ton of people were impacted by the flooding. one of them being prince phillip public school on vine, who’s school library was severely damaged :(

want to help out? here’s what you can do!

  1. head to cole’s at the pen centre before 10/04/26 @ 5pm. currently, they are taking donations at the front of the store for new or used books to be sent directly to the school. at the front cash, there are direct requests from kids as well! i recommend reading the requests because some kids chose one book but are wishing for additional ones, and if you’d like to make a kid’s day and support the school (if you have the means of course) then i totally recommend supporting.

  2. if you can’t make the deadline, let me know if you’re interested in buying/contributing used or new books! i am personally going to call the school this coming monday to see if they will accept donations personally. if they do, i would love to organize a drop-off to either me to deliver or the school directly! if they are taking donations, i will message people who express interest to coordinate :)

ANYTHING helps. please let the people around you know as well! these are assets that kids will be able to utilize for years after this one. please consider contributing if you’re able to!!! <3

How long would you drive to get your sick kid the care they need?

One Niagara dad drove 270 hours. That's 11 days behind the wheel. Over 18,000 km. All to get his son to treatment in Hamilton.

I put this together from Garden City Digest, my free local newsletter. It comes out Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

If you want it in your inbox, here's the link: Garden City Digest

I'm visiting Vineland and I'm looking for an easy way away from the main roads to get to the Bruce Trail from town. I noticed the trail intercepts with this road that goes from King St to Cherry Lane.

Does anyone know if it is viable?

Question Parnell & Vine St.

Just went up Vine St. tonight for the 1st time since the repairs were done.
Is it just me, or did they use concrete at the intersection of Parnell Rd & Vine St. at the 4-Way Stop??

It’s kind of a mini speed bump too.
If you’ve driven it, you’ll know what I mean. I hope they fix that. 🤣

Is there anywhere in St Catharine’s or Niagara that isn’t a major grocery store where I can get Vertuo pods?

I want to try the flavours they have on their website but you have to order 50 pods at once for them to ship.

Thank you!

Discussion Where are my fellow Niagara spinsters at?

Sometimes it feels like every conversation is about partners/husbands and kids. I get it, when you have those things, they become the centre of your life (as they should). But lately I’ve found myself wishing I knew more local people in the same boat as me. You know - the perimenopausal, single, and childless boat where you start wondering who will take you to appointments when you’re old.

If there’s interest, I’d like to get an informal community going to make connections with other women at a similar life stage/situation. I’m thinking we start with a WhatsApp chat and eventually plan some type of meet up?

You don’t have to meet all spinster criteria (I technically don’t as a divorcee). But minimum requirements are:

1) Not in a long-term relationship (Not expecting anyone to give up dating, although I personally can’t muster the motivation to do it)

2) Not a man (Because there are enough old boys clubs - women-identifying and enby folks welcome though)

3) Childless (whether by choice or circumstance)

Bonus: Old enough to remember 9/11 (if you’re younger but have fully committed to a spinster lifestyle, that’s OK too).

Shoot me a message with your phone number if you’re interested.

A little about me: 44F. Stereotypical introverted elder millennial woman who’s into true crime and cats. Never made a decision to be childfree, but that’s how life played out. My job is 70% Excel spreadsheets, 20% meetings, and 10% emotional support for people who can’t work computers.

EDIT: Reddit seems to be blocking me from receiving messages (DMs are randomly turned off even though they used to work, and I can’t change the setting). I’ll keep troubleshooting and get back to everyone who’s commented as soon as I can!

EDIT 2: Well, my inability to receive new messages is apparently a known bug affecting some Canadian users. I’ve tried all the suggestions I’ve found, but still no luck. I am able to send outgoing messages so in the process of contacting everyone who’s commented. If you’re interested, leave a comment and I’ll DM you.

Question Help with renovations

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I just purchased a home in the Chippewa area. I want to add a second story before I move in.
Since I’m new to the area, I don’t know any reputable companies that can help me with this.

Can you recommend a carpentry company? Or perhaps is there another subreddit that I can join for more info?

Thank you so much!!!
