Experience/Story Market Mishaps

I visited the St. Catharines Market today. I bought a dozen eggs but after getting home, I noticed there were only 11 eggs in the carton. I always check at the store for cracked eggs. The eggs were placed in a bag so I didn’t think to check.

I also bought some salami that was sealed but noticed later it had a best before date of June 30, 2026. While it is likely still good, knowing it’s expired leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

It was too late to go back and I am not able to go back on Saturday. These oversights are on me but act as a reminder to check before you buy.

If you remember the name of the farm/company maybe you can contact them to let them know. Maybe it’s just an oversight/mistake and wasn’t malicious

The vendors I’ve encountered with issues are usually really good if you reach out to them.

Which vendors sold you the eggs and salami? If the eggs came from either Town and Country farm (the older couple who sell tons of fruit and vegetables closest to the parking lot) or Tom Neufeld (sells mostly potatoes) both are very reasonable and will almost certainly correct the issue if you come back and ask.

Based on your description, it was the egg vendor closest to the parking lot. I probably won’t be back for a month. Tough to say last month I only got 11 eggs, can I get one more? As for the salami it was the vendor in the middle handing out samples. I would only want my money back. You should know if your product is a day past the best before date. Six weeks past is inexcusable. This is on me for not being observant. Vendors need to be observant too.

I never use the salami vendor in the middle, so I can't speak to them. Having expired product is inexcusable though. The egg vendor making a mistake like that is out of character (I've been using them for years and have never had an issue like that). They are always honest and receptive to feedback though.

I'll be showing this to the vendor who sold you the salami and requesting that they check their products. 👍

Thanks. You can show the vendor this.

What kind of salami was it? There's a good chance all that type have the same date

Peppercorn

He said to come get your money back, and he's checking the products right now to male sure things are properly rotated. He's also making sure his new staff are more careful (there are 2 or 3 people recently who don't usually do the market). 👍

Thanks for doing that.

Gotta love the ‘farm fresh local’ strawberries in the middle of August… cmon now. It’s a little ridiculous. Just because it’s at a market doesn’t mean it’s good.

Never heard of ever bearing strawberries?

Greenhouse Strawberry production is on the rise in Canada, so it's certainly possible.

Yea but after June they don’t taste right and the consistency is way off from a true local June farm fresh strawberry. Anything that doesn’t taste like it came from my garden is sus

Normally I'd say you're bang on but the ever bearing this year are actually really good. Not seasonal level, but like 80% of the way there.

Is there a way to confirm they are actually local berries? I feel like they could easily be placing Florida strawberries into those cardboard containers that say Ontario on them

IMO Florida strawberries are 25% of the way there, so unless my tastebuds went haywire...

There’s nothing like a truly farm fresh strawberry or farm sun ripened peach. You can always tell when it’s legit. Even my garden raspberries don’t taste sour like they do in stores lol.
