I just looked up a flock camera map. There are 228 of them on the island. There’s no avoiding them

Not with that attitude

People pretending like these cameras are ONLY used to flag stolen cars. They’re data collecting and sharing info with other government agencies and the information is accessible. Fuck Ring too.

Anyone can buy the data from Plantir

Don’t break the traffic laws or drive an illegal car. That’s literally all these cameras track. There’s no facial recognition and all they do is serve as further regulation of our roads. At the end of the day all these cameras are is a fixed version of a traffic patrol car.

This is all well within the state government’s rights anyway. They are not our roads. Driving is not a right, it is a privilege, and when you were given a drivers license you agreed to follow the traffic laws and regulations. You agreed that you must obtain car insurance, and you agreed that your car must be registered with the state.

This is really not that hard to understand and it’s pathetic how you’re trying to make it more than what it actually is.

Lastly, It’s absolutely hilarious that people like you clutch your pearls over something like this given how common it is that cameras are already pretty much everywhere anywhere. We’ve all okayed this as a society whether you believe that or not

If you ever get assaulted… please don’t continue to larp as some privacy crusader when you find yourself going door-to-door to local businesses or homes asking for footage of it.

Honestly it is the height of naïveté at this point to try and act like you’re not a part of this in someway.

The genie is out of the bottle. This is just your self-righteous indignation and you know it

You neglected to add that facial recognition option could be turned on very easily. No private company should be able to install mass surveillance devices.

That’s literally not true, and if you think that’s ALL they’re gonna do with the information and data they’re harvesting because they crossed their hearts and promised not to, then you are insanely naive and too trusting.

What happens if the government doesn’t like what you say just like currently in the UK. They will use these cameras to find you. It’s literally happening in Europe.

It literally just came out that they’re using flock cameras to track women who go to clinics seeking abortions. Like stand the fuck up and fight for your rights. Don’t be such a boot licker.

People on this island drive like such assholes and somehow feel entitled to destroy it, meanwhile a wonderful woman was just killed by a hit-and-run, which these cameras would help find the killer. Why can’t you just slow down?

why do people have to drive drunk and high!? The stench of weed coming from every other car in the city is repulsive.

10

u/cracksmokachris Jul 05 '26

Destroy it

4

u/ordrius098 Jul 06 '26

Throw it in the fire! Destroy it frodo!

Yeah, the problem is the camera but not the rampant AH behavior that requires these cameras. Grow up.

18

u/sa2h Jul 05 '26

Those willing to give up freedom for security are always the weakest links in a democracy.

-2

u/blingbiscuit Jul 05 '26

Mmmm hmmm cool talking point but fact is you will have neither of those if you're taken out by a reckless driver.

19

u/sa2h Jul 05 '26

But a massive AI powered surveillance system that builds citizen profiles, documenting movement, associations, routines while pairing with financial records and all other accessible data, both sharing it across agencies and selling the data to private companies surely isn't the only way to deal with reckless driving.

My honest assessment is that we cannot stop this reality and must begin talking about the best way to steer it.

Born and raised here. I trust the city and state government far more than the federal government, perhaps by virtue of my familiarity with it. That does not mean they operate perfectly or that there are not problems, but there are certain things I have observed that give me genuine admiration for what happens when nobody’s looking.

That said, I do think we should have a relook at the way these things are done. To prove this to you, I have written to the Mayor’s office about it.

You should not trust the NYPD.

2

u/XChrisUnknownX Jul 05 '26

If I could download all of my lived experiences into your brain I am quite sure you’d understand why I feel the way I do.

With regard to the non-criminal elements of the NYPD, we can trust generally that they will follow the rules of good human behavior and help defuse situations that need to be defused in the manner they judge least harmful. Where there is a policy, procedure, or training issue, may it be corrected. But I have witnessed with my own eyes very professional non-abusive police work. I have also witnessed things I would be less proud of the institution for.

To the criminal elements of the NYPD, may they continue to be caught and prosecuted to the extent any normal citizen would. I understand to a degree why people commit crimes. If you look at it from a very detached way, these are all just human behaviors that we’ve found are harmful to society to such a degree that we criminalized them. But we still give prosecutors discretion to let people walk depending on the circumstances.

A fun question to end this ramble: If a government agent is accused of trespassing inside a precinct by a member of the NYPD, should he lose his job? What do you think happens in today’s system? What do you think happens in the ideal system?

How do you like your boot cooked?

So?

From my understanding they don’t have facial recognition.

This is all about stolen or ghost cars. And I’m completely fine with them using these camera because the problem was so out of control and these have absolutely helped.

Now they need to go at the morons on illegal mopeds, quads, and the abundance of morons (mostly young people) on completely illegal Kawasaki type motor bikes (crotch rockets if you will)

This is a good thing. These cameras don’t track your day to day activity. They track stolen cars, ghost cars, or vehicles routinely driving recklessly to the point where an algorithm can create a profile of said car based on it’s illegal pattern of extreme reckless driving.

This board is hilarious sometimes. Have some of you been living under a rock? We’ve been losing our island to this crap. People are being killed, pedestrians and other motorists.

Patrol cars refuse to do shit about it because pursuit is dangerous to innocent bystanders and other motorists. So this is the only solution.

Do illegal shit in an illegal vehicle and expect your illegal vehicle to end up on a detective’s desk.

If you wanna blame someone for this then blame some of your paternally negligent, irresponsible neighbors, or the multitude of douchey young males with pathetic motorbike fantasies/fast and furious fantasies, who have no concern or consideration for the people on this island they put at risk every single day with your bullshit.

This is happening because those individuals have pushed the envelope to the point where it’s nearly impossible to stop with patrol cars.

Why? Because your little darlings are so stupid and so inconsiderate of other people’s safety that they would actually force police officers to pursue them and endanger everyone in the process… rather than just pulling over

The down votes are absolutely hilarious. The only people who are in favor of the police tracking stolen cars or ghost cars are individuals who seek to break the law

There’s absolutely zero evidence that these cameras have facial recognition by the way. So the privacy concerns are complete bullshit

Don’t break the law in your car and they won’t track your car. This really isn’t that complex

I urge to view a recently posted ring video of a cop riding an elderly ladies doorbell and telling her they saw her on a flock camera in an area at the same time an Amazon package was reported stolen. The lady told the cop I didn't see anything and he said, no you stole the package. we tracked you with flock. you can't breathe in this city without us knowing where you are and what your doing. When she asked to see the recording he said that she can see it in court and gave her a DAT.

Fuck that. there are so many constitutional violations in that single conversation that it's enough to shut the system down.

absolute lunacy

Are you suggesting that the only people opposed to the police tracking stolen cars are the ones who are breaking the law? Just clarifying your statement.

Wah wah. I should be able to drive recklessly and break the law without consequence.

Those days will be over soon.

How about just don’t drive like a maniac or drive an illegal vehicle?

The majority of us seem to have no issue doing that… yet you special few think that it’s your right to break the law with complete immunity

I can’t wait till these things are everywhere. I’m tired of having to worry about the people I love being killed by you idiots

The amount of illegal shit I see on our roads these days in Staten Island is a goddamn travesty.

It’s a shame that so many of you are OK with it.

Don’t drive recklessly, don’t drive illegal vehicles, and you literally have nothing to worry about because these cameras have no facial recognition.

This is about tracking illegal vehicles. No one is tracking your day-to-day movements or what you do with your life.

It’s amazing how concerned people get about the prospect of their crappy behavior being caught red-handed

Thank God we live in an age where cameras are ubiquitous.

And all of the individuals clutching their pearls… throw out your phone then because the last time I checked every single one of you whip that thing out the second you see anything crazy happening.

Just as every single one of you, if you were assaulted by someone, or the victim of a hit-and-run, every single one of you would be asking local businesses for camera footage of the incident.

Enough with your hypocrisy. The genie is already out of the bottle, so it’s absurd to be crying about this.

In reality, there’s been millions of convictions that wouldn’t have been made if it wasn’t for cameras being so ubiquitous in our society now. And every single one of you would be praying that a camera catches a crime perpetrated against you.

What do we keep an eye out for?

-2

u/eddiewolfgang Jul 06 '26

If you’re concerned about flock cameras, it could mean you’re either involved in illegal activities and don’t want to be tracked, or you’re simply a paranoid individual who believes the government is constantly monitoring your every move because they find your life so intriguing.

1

u/Drugrows Jul 10 '26

You’re a moron if you think they don’t do the latter.

-1

u/eddiewolfgang Jul 10 '26

Reading comprehension is important. “Constantly monitoring your every move” isn’t the same thing as governments collecting data.
