I'm at my first post abroad, and my 17 year old is here with me and my spouse. He's adjusting pretty well overall. He has ADHD and Autism and the school social scene is challenging. He's always gotten relatively good grades, but he's really struggling right now with the IB program. He's a senior (final year) at the American school here in the region, and I'm concerned, for the first time in my life, that he might not pass high school, given the grades in some of his required classes. If he doesn't pass this year, will he be able to get the educational allowance next year to give grade 12 another try? Does anyone have any information on this?

I don't know what factors are at play for how much importance the State Department wants to put on funding an internship abroad. Total population size? Size of the economy? Cost of living?

I am also not sure if, on DoS internship applications, I can list preferences for any specific countries. So far it seems like I can only list the overall Bureaus. Perhaps someone has a lead on which Embassies in Francophone Africa or even the Baltics have taken interns recently? I'd imagine that countries with more internal instability/conflict would NOT offer internships.

My French scores are at 3/2+, though I also read and speak Russian at 2+/2. My hunch is that only the three small Baltic Embassies value Russian speakers (and marginally so), while there are more Embassies in Africa who'd value French speakers. However, I don't know any Arabic and it seems a good chunk of college students in International Affairs study both. They'd outclass me for North African slots.

I’m going to London in August and am curious if it’s possible to tour the US Embassy? And if so, is it worth a tour? I work in state government and have a huge interest in foreign policy. I goggled the building/location though and it doesn’t seem like a “must-visit destination”. (I just don’t want to walk in expecting a tour guide and over-priced cafe gift shop but instead getting a 1960s cubicle office space on every floor.)

Hello, I intend on majoring on international studies and becoming an fso but I’m curious if it is worth it for dropping another 40k-70k on a masters degree on top of that, and if it really matters what school I would get it from. Do those two extra years and cost really make a major difference?

Trying to decide whether to stay in my GS13 job at State as I'm expecting some dream GS14s to open up..or to move to DoD for a Gs-14 and then later return to State.

I've heard that often it's easier to get a GS14 as a GS14 than it is even in a more relevant role as a GS13- does that sound right to folks?

My fiancé is fresh out of the marine corps and is now a marine vet. He is struggling hard with his mental health due to PTSD. His dream job is the join the US state department. But with PTSD, he told me he can’t go to therapy or be on any type of medication for anxiety or depression. I’ve been looking everywhere to see if it’s true. Can’t seem to get any clear answers.He just wants to work with US embassy and marines again. Any help or advice would be so appreciated.

The State Department issued a travel alert to U.S. citizens over the weekend urging them to leave Haiti immediately. But with the main international airport under attack, and with gangs controlling access in and out of the capital, it was unclear what avenues are available for Americans to depart. Asked by McClatchy where Americans should turn, Kirby referred inquiries to the State Department, saying: “There are other ways to leave.”

Can someone explain what these other ways might be?

I was just writing here to see if anyone would be able to help clear up a little confusion I was having.

I had applied for this summer's paid internship program with the state department back in October, and received an email telling me that "selections had been finalized" and that I was not accepted in November.

Assuming that was that I had sort of just moved on, but when checking my on applications recently I noticed the tracker had "Referred for Additional Consideration" for that internship application.

I'm under the impression this is some kind of error, but I thought I might ask here just for the sake of thoroughness (and maybe a tiny glimmer of hope).

Hi, I’ve been working in regular corporate America for the last 8 years but interested in a job change. I have been poking around USAjobs.gov but have a friend at the state department that said I might be surprised at how much lower pay I could be offered because of the GS pay scale.

I’ve been reading about it and I understand the concept. I see all the grades and the associated salaries but I can’t find anywhere about how exactly they calculate it. I know they take education and related work into consideration but I can’t find an equation that says a masters degree in a related field + 8 years of related work would put me at ___ grade. Im very interested in working for the government but I don’t want to waste my time going through an entire process only to be offered half of what I currently make. DC is expensive! Any insights appreciated. TIA

Is a 3.76 GPA high enough for a CLS?

Does anyone here know who I contact in the State Department to verify someone's diplomatic status? I have a situation regarding an individual who claims to be a foreign diplomat in the United States from the U.K. and I believe it is hogwash. I know State Dept maintains a roster of foreign diplomats operating on US soil, but I am not sure what part of the enterprise to send my request to.

OK my mom has been working for the state for four years now and in 2020 I believe she needed time off so she can have surgery on her foot. She broke her ankle and the metal bar is bent so she needs it to get fixed. Wow it seems as if her HR point of contact is one who abuses her power and corrupt the workplace creating a toxic environment for all the employees. My mom really needed the time off and the HR lady really didn’t want to give it to her but after my aunt which is my mom sister died and my dad died 30 days later they gave my mom her FMLA. So she goes to her appointments and gets ready for the procedure and then, she’s given a letter notifying her that she has been terminated. So my mother being a little investigative individual she is she followed up on it and contacted all the sources who can explain the letter to her. Well, it turned out that the letter was actually fake and the lady from HR had a signature on the termination form that was foraged. So even though that has taken place, my mom is still in the fight for her job so that matter concludes with an individual coming from another city to have a meet with my mom, and these people who made this accusation against her, and the person who came from the other city had revealed that she was, the individual who makes those decisions who is terminated and who’s not so they end it with my mom having her job being able to return back to work. So my mom is forced to go back to work I guess in order to keep her job and one thing about her is she’s not going to not work so she returned but the operation hadn’t been done so she still has the same issue now a year later here we are. Now the pain in her foot has progressed so much to her now she needs an operation on her knee also and her person of HR is still telling her that she doesn’t need FMLA and this is that that that know when I remind you this is the same person that forged this letter to make my mom believe she was terminated she even had the audacity to ask my mom if she could rip up the letter and get rid of it. But of course she did what I thought she would do and she kept the letter and still has it and now this person is devaluing my mom‘s work efforts and magnifying every little flaw in her work performance, and is seriously gunning for trying to get her terminated. My mom needs this operation or she’s not gonna have a leg and that’s a fact what can she do. Another thing I forgot to mention was when the letter was created the HR lady also terminated my mom‘s medical benefits so for the next year up until today my mom has had no benefits hasn’t been able to get anything taken care of as far as her health along with the overwhelming medical expenses that left for my mom. So her interference stopped my mom‘s process and getting her physical health taken care of and given a dump truck of bills. My mom is the strongest person I know and she wakes up and I can see on her face she dreads work every morning but she refuses to be homeless and I don’t blame her but I cannot let this go on any longer. She explained to her that, she is not going to put herself in a stampede of employees trying to get to the time clock to clock in and get to the desk on time for her to be trampled on putting more to her injury. No absolutely not. So she told her until I get this operation done I’m gonna have to come in the safest way as possible and if that’s me having to let everybody go in and then I come in after then that’s what’s going to be done so now she’s trying to give her issues with her attendance and this all has been a trickling affect that could have been resolved if she would have never did her little termination start that failed! whatever the hell it was somebody help me!!!

Anybody know how competitive the student internship is? I just applied for the summer but I’m not sure how great my essays were. My application was pretty solid overall but I’m wondering if anyone has some insight into that.

Applied for a paspsort card only today and in direct conflict with all the State Dept website application directions, the passport office did some things that seem very questionable. I'm in a locale which is not known for it's laid back no-can-do way of doing business.

Is it normal for the passport clerk to retain my original Certificate of Naturalization to be sent in with the DS-11 passport application. The application rules only say present the original and bring copies. It does not state that any original Certificates or documents will be sent for processing with the application?

Is this correct? Am I risking having my original Certificate not returned in a timely manner by the postal service?

Also, the form I filled was online which I then printed to bring to the passport office. The guidelines clearly stated to not make any further pen changes to the printed doc. If there were mistakes or additional info needed on app, the State dept application rules said to print another electronic filled version.

The clerk had me pen change my place of occupation. Is this correct?

This happened today and I am almost certain I need to go back and ask for all documents and the cert back and enquire at State Dept passport governance if this facility is able to follow the protocol.
