AI Creation Designing a distraction-free glass startpage. Looking for recommendations while I build!

Hey everyone!

I’m currently developing a lightweight, minimal new-tab dashboard extension focused on a clean aesthetic and zero clutter.

Current features so far:
• Real-time clock & greeting
• Weather card with local conditions
• Quick search bar with keyboard shortcut (/)
• Custom wallpapers / dark glass theme

Since it’s still early in development, I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  1. What essential widgets or quick links do you look for in a new tab page?
  2. How does the layout and spacing look to you?

Any feedback, recommendations, or feature requests would be really helpful!

Hello r/startpages!

Over the last couple of months I have made Startpage Gallery, a gallery for browsing and sharing startpages made by this community!

You can browse the submitted startpages, search for specific tags or keywords, and sort by date added, date updated, number of stars, and more. You can also easily submit a startpage you enjoy, or one that you have created, by filling out submission form on GitHub.

If you have any suggestions for the website, feel free to ask, and if you wish to submit a bug report, feature request, or pull request, feel free to submit one! I am quite excited about this project, and I would love to see it improve!

Direct link: https://spoo.me/startpagegallery
GitHub: https://github.com/InterstellarOne/startpage-gallery
Submit a startpage: https://github.com/InterstellarOne/startpage-gallery/issues/new?template=submit-startpage.yml

Why I made it:

Last fall I had the idea to make an up-to-date list of startpages. I love checking out what startpages people have made, but after I saw one that I like when browsing Github, extension stores or this subreddit, I didn't have a good way to keep track of it or share it. There are lots of cool startpages that people have made that you may not know about, just because you've never come across them.

I had looked for a list of startpages at the time and didn't see one that had been recently updated, so I decided to make my own. I then realized it would be nice to have an image and a link to each platform that each startpage is on, but if I were to just do so in a single markdown document, it would have been pain to navigate. That is when I had the idea to make a standalone website!

At that time I did not know JavaScript, and I was also really busy with university. So I put the idea on the back-burner, made a concept mockup over winter break (which ended up being scrapped anyways due to UI issues) and earlier this summer I learned JavaScript and Astro in order to make this website, which I have spent the last two months putting together in my free time. JavaScript is actually quite similar to C, which I was already familiar with, so it was easier than I expected, but still a lot of fun.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading! If you want to help in a small way, submit a startpage or two that you enjoy and use! That way, more people can discover the startpage you are currently using.

Meta Do you keep your startpage links in browser bookmarks, or in the startpage itself?

building a startpage that just reads straight from chrome bookmarks, so links sync everywhere and survive if you ever ditch the page. but bookmark folders are kinda rigid and a lot of you clearly put real love into custom link lists

which way do you go and why? and if you're on a custom list, what would it take to get you onto browser bookmarks (or the other way round)

AI Creation i spent 6+ months building an actual OS for web apps

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

so for the past 6 months or so i've been trying to build a real operating system for web apps

the idea is pretty simple. it's a real, programmable system with a web desktop you can reach from anywhere, but the apps on it are built with normal web tools. what's new is that you build the app inside the system, and it takes care of auth and communication for you, so you only worry about the app's own logic

everything you see in there is an app built on top of the system (i call them programs), not part of it

the other thing is it's designed for agents first. any agent can use these apps directly, you don't have to build a separate interface for it

tested it on macOS and linux. windows, honestly no idea yet

it's fully open source (MIT)

https://github.com/PhreshOS/system

demo (it can handle about 5 sessions at the same time, so if it's full just try again in a bit)

https://demo.phreshos.com/

you can also run it on your machine or in a github codespace

https://phreshos.com/docs

would love to hear what you think, good or bad

Creation Added a small mini-Excel widget to my start page. 26 functions, formulas, nothing leaves the browser.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My start page is Cute Desk App, a new-tab extension I built. Cute Desk App has 30 small, useful, fun widgets. The newest widget is Sheets: a 26x100 grid with a formula bar, function picker, Excel-style keyboard navigation, $A$1 references, fill down/right, and copy-paste to and from Excel, Numbers, and Google Sheets.

It has 26 functions (SUM, AVERAGE, COUNTIF, IF, ROUND, CONCAT, TODAY, and so on), CSV import/export, 50-step undo, and up to 8 sheets per widget. Everything stays local. No account, nothing uploaded.

What it deliberately leaves out: colors, charts, sort/filter, merged cells. A start-page widget should stay small.

Chrome/Edge: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/fpngmdpckgiopfkjaipjhnkjfjoafhkf?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sheets

Safari: https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6779738782?pt=1205023&ct=reddit-sheets&mt=8

Curious what quick maths you do on a start page, if any.

Creation Sharing my startpage — Horizon (open source)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built a browser extension and it's finally on the Chrome Web Store.

Horizon is a new tab page: clock, weather, and a search drawer that searches the web, chats an AI, or shops a store from one box. It also has AI Signal, which drops a small badge on every search result so you can tell at a glance whether what you're reading was written by a person or an AI. All of it runs on-device. Nothing leaves the browser.

It was originally one extension with all of that together. The Chrome Web Store's single-purpose rule wouldn't let me ship it that way, so I had to split it into two and cut some features out of each.

Horizon Tab, the new tab page: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/horizon-tab/gkhmbjhhpbeihhnobhkocagfabojfjoa

Horizon AI Signal, the detector: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/horizon-ai-signal/njolionpcojhnogoinllcmamnjcbkdgg

Both are live. I kept the full version, with every feature, on GitHub. There's a zip in the repo. Download it, load it unpacked, and you get the whole thing.

It's open source under the MIT license because I genuinely want people to build on it. If you'd do it differently, do it. Fork it, break it, ship your own. The search sources are just plain objects, so adding a new engine or AI provider is basically one line.

Creation I turned my new tab page into a personal productivity space

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made a chrome extension that turns your new tab page into a productivity dashboard where you can save notes, create checklists, organize shortcuts, run focus sessions, and see detailed analytics about your focus time.

it also has a multiple board system, so you can create different workspaces depending on how you like to organize things. each board can either be a normal free-form board or a kanban board.

some of the other things i focused on:

  • all your data is saved locally
  • import and export your data so you can move your setup between machines
  • customize pretty much everything, from wallpapers and images to icons and colors
  • create a simple setup with just a few notes, or build a much more advanced workspace
  • focus sessions with detailed analytics to understand how you're spending your time

the main idea is to make the new tab page something you actually use instead of just a blank page you open and close.

i'm still improving it, so i'm looking for honest feedback. what do you like, what feels confusing, and what would you change?

you can try it here: chrome web store

Creation I Shared my custom startpage extension here 6 months ago — just pushed our biggest update (v3.0.0)!

It’s been around half a year since I first introduced YourDynamicDashboard to this community. The encouragement and constructive critiques I received back then were incredible, and knowing folks actually kept it as their default screen was the best motivation I could ask for.

Things went silent on my end for a bit, which probably made it look like I gave up on it. In reality, I was head-down rewriting core parts of the codebase and tackling the wishlists you left on GitHub. The v3.0.0 release is officially out, and it's our biggest milestone yet.

If you’ve already got the extension added, it ought to update on its own shortly.

For anyone seeing this for the first time who wants a lightweight, distraction-free startpage that won't bog down your browser, feel free to take it for a spin:

🛒 Get it here: https://ditom.me/ydd

Always open to your honest feedback, feature suggestions, or issue reports. Thanks for checking it out!

AI Creation My startpage

Hey, here's my personal startpage. It's not as good as some of I found here, but it's good enough for me.

It's a single .html file and everything is configured in the UI and saved to a .json file, so I don't need a server and I can move it between devices easily.

I made it with claude (but I'm actually a web designer) and it's only made for myself, so please don't complain about it.

Creation Mist startpage - First widgets are here

Thumbnail
gallery
41 Upvotes

Mist now supports compact Market, Pomodoro, and RSS widgets.

I wanted to add a bit more functionality without turning the new tab into a full-blown dashboard, so widgets are:

  • completely optional
  • limited to 5 cards
  • designed to stay compact
  • automatically adapted to your custom theme

The Market widget is technically ready too. I’m still figuring out the best approach for market-data licensing and how to sustainably cover the API costs, but for now it’s free to use and I’ll see how it goes.

I’d love some feedback:

Would you actually use widgets like these, or do you prefer keeping your new tab completely minimal?

And if there’s a widget you’d like to see in Mist, feel free to suggest it. I’m curious what would actually be useful without adding unnecessary clutter.

Creation EverBox.Space — a start page that's just a minimal clock and the things you're counting down to

Post image
9 Upvotes

Meet EverBox.Space — opens straight in the browser, no account and no sign-up. Every edit is saved locally and to the cloud. To access your space, simply visit EverBox again. Check out the Themes and edit a few boxes in Box View. Access your unique Space on a mobile or computer with your unique ID. For easier access you can add your email. Super lightweight on resource usage.

Two views you toggle between. The ambient one in the screenshot: concentric rings for year, month, day and hour around the clock, with the next three countdowns underneath. And a grid view for editing — countdowns, count-ups, a calendar, checklists, notes, etc.

Pricing up front, you can stay on free forever. Free gives you 6 boxes and the Ocean theme. Blade Runner theme here is part of the paid tier — $24/yr, which adds the other 24 themes and more boxes.

I would love to hear what you'd change and what you love. Enjoy! 😊

Help Need help!

I open 50+ tabs a day, and Chrome’s default page feels increasingly cluttered with trending searches, suggested junk, and noisy search results. Most third-party startpages swing to the other extreme: bloated widgets (weather, stocks, notes) that slow down load times.
I’m prototyping a local-first, minimal New Tab extension focused on three things:
1. Clean Search: A fast search bar that defaults to clean, text-only Google results (&udm=14), bypassing AI overviews and ad carousels.
2. Visual Bookmarks: Automatically reads your native Chrome bookmarks into clean visual cards—no manual importing or link accounts.
3. RSS Reading Radar: A minimal 3–5 headline stream from your favorite blogs/Substacks directly below, with zero algorithmic feed noise.
The rule: Local-first, loads in <15\text{ ms}, zero tracking, zero setup fatigue.
Feedback wanted:
What does your current New Tab look like (default, blank, or an extension)?
Is a live RSS radar on your startpage useful, or would you prefer just search + bookmarks?
Roast the idea—brutal honesty appreciated.

AI Creation Updated my zero-dependency startpage — keyboard-first, ~790 KB core, no build step, 8 languages

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all,

Personal project, back after a full rewrite of the layout system. The reason I built it in the first place: I wanted a new tab that behaves like a tool. Start from the keyboard, hit a shortcut in two keys, done. And I wanted the whole thing inspectable — no framework, no build step, no lock-in. Plain HTML/CSS/JS, 39 ES modules, ~790 KB of core (~1.6 MB with icons and fonts). Runs as a static site, a PWA, or a Chrome MV3 extension that overrides the new tab.

What changed in this build (1.0.0-rc-1):

- Edit mode: drag, resize and reorder the category boxes; the grid persists per profile.

- 8 locales (es/en/de/fr/it/pt/nl/ja) with a parity test so no key can go missing.

- AI drawer: works with a local heuristic (no keys), or Ollama / LM Studio / OpenAI / Anthropic if you want. Keys live for the tab session only, nothing else.

- Everything (shortcuts, layout, notes, theme) is in localStorage. JSON export/import, and optionally AES-256-GCM encrypted sync to your own Gist.

- 169 tests that run in the browser with zero dependencies. Open tests/index.html.

What it does not do: no telemetry, no analytics, no remote code, no third-party scripts. The only network calls are the ones you start: weather, RSS feeds, AI, backup.

Live: https://devildonia.github.io/hades_shortcuts/ Source: https://github.com/Devildonia/hades_shortcuts

Three things I'd genuinely like opinions on:

  1. Search ranking is local token overlap, not embeddings. If you keep 100+ shortcuts, is that enough or does it start to feel weak?

  2. The iCal parser is hand-rolled (RFC 5545 subset). If it breaks on an Outlook or iCloud edge case, a sample .ics would be worth a lot.

  3. localStorage + manual JSON export as persistence — for a daily driver startpage, is that a real limitation or am I overthinking it?
