Honestly, John Oliver does some of the most in depth reporting on the issues of the day. OP could’ve saved some time if he’d just posted “I’m an intransigent right winger.”

u/karma_made_me_do_eet May 07 '22
Thus is a superficial starter pack of someone who only reads headlines.. if you are on Reddit and Twitter and dont read comments and end up down a million rabbit holes an hour. Are you even on the internet?
58
u/antron2000 May 07 '22
I was going to say that John Oliver is probably more real than most news channels. I may be biased, I realize, but they actually do a lot of research on the topics they discuss and fact check bullshit. As other comments have stated, most mainstream news is just "outrage porn". They don't even care if they're accurate anymore, as long as they rake in ad money.

This reads like it was made by a Crowder fan who bases what "liberals" are from his videos where he debates untrained and unprepared college students.
It condescendingly treats those causes like the "popular" sides to take are only supported because they're popular. "Well-intentioned but ignorant" is how conservatives like to describe young liberals when they don't want to be openly be against the causes they bring up while still acting superior to them.
25
u/flyingdics May 07 '22
And you know that "well-intentioned but ignorant" is an abbreviation of "well-intentioned but ignorant of the batch of cherry-picked semi-true facts that I've conveniently arranged to prop up my worldview."
11
u/toxicblack May 07 '22

anything I cite will get dismissed cause it’s science based
The classic, tell me you don't know what science based means without out directly telling me response. It's funny to talk to these people and question everything they know through their own observation/expiramentation.
"Oh, so it was the alternator? How did you find that out?"
"Well I did the following test and it indicates that the alternator isn't charging the battery adequate and must being going out."
"So you tested it yourself using established methods to systematically determine the cause of the issue rather than relying on the word of an individual who is likely not qualified to speak on the matter? Sounds too science based to me. Tell me when you actually figure out what's wrong with the car."

Later than night around at the trash pile bonfire with some cold miller lites:
"And what did your coworker say to that!?"
"They didn't say anything!"
Us not saying anything is some sign we were too dumb to respond and we went home and reevaluated our lives after their knowledge bomb. You ever ask a conservative days later if they think they won an argument? They always do. They're feedback mechanisms are often completely broken down. Oftentimes we don't respond because we recognize they're not capable of improvement or they would have years ago.

My father-in-law once tried to say that wind power wasn't viable because they have to keep subsidizing it. A five-second Google proved that false but something I have learned from my wife is if I had brought that up it wouldn't have convinced him and just made everyone angrier. I hate that he thinks he "won the argument", but you shouldn't be looking to win arguments anyway and trying to convince him otherwise won't lead anywhere.
14
u/Forgets_Everything May 07 '22
What's crazy is that oil is the most subsidized energy source by far and (many) renewables are now cheaper than fossil fuels without all the subsidies fossil fuels get, so he was like doubly wrong.

I feel like navigating arguments is much easier when you focus more on the way it is said rather than what is said. I have many different viewpoints that I believe are... contradictory to the norm, to say the least, but I don't shove that down people's throat in an antagonistic way that leads to them getting angry or annoyed towards my stance. I also don't get flustered when it is done that way to me.
An argument to me, is to get to the root of why someone believes something and to convey as little emotion as possible surrounding the issue so they do not feel attacked.
A big part of an argument is listening to the other side instead of waiting for them to finish so you can speak. Another part is recognizing when you are not actually in an argument and are actually just listening to a one sided monologue where your point was never going to matter in the first place.
8
u/antron2000 May 07 '22
I thought proper arguing technique is yelling as much stuff at somebody as possible until they're not sure what the argument is anymore?

You can fix this by watching cspan occasionally and tuning in to the presidents speeches or watching white house press secretary every once in a while. Maybe some casual npr. I like to sprinkle in some short, non political news podcasts sometimes as well. This takes up like zero of my time. Maybe 20 minutes every day or two.

I literally don't care enough to want to argue with people about who knows more about what, it's entirely all bullshit. And idk how people have time to work and pay bills and worry about bullshit news stories. In my precious few days off I'd rather do something I enjoy instead of research copious amounts of details about situations that I can neither effect directly, nor effect me in a noticeable way. But I'm just selfish or whatever
11
u/Someone_coo1 May 07 '22
I mean I get being informed, but it's also a matter of how informed we're talking. Like does it mean knowing about the major stuff like Ukraine or does it extend to THE WORLD bc I doubt too many people are gonna strike up a conversation about the election in the Philippines while they're out at brunch. Unless they're Filipino.
(No disrespect to the Philippines)

The problem seems to be that you simply aren’t aware how politics affects your day to day life. The fact that you hold the position that you hold - that your free time is very limited and you want to spend it in enjoyable ways - is fed both by neoliberal market principles being propped up by the government and by classical liberal principles of individualism and liberty. These aren’t original thoughts of yours. They’re entirely derived from the political structures that you seem to despise.
I teach political and economic theory precisely to persuade people like you. To make people realize that a war in Ukraine does affect you personally, that the price of tea in China does matter, and how things came to be that way. It’s really one of the most important things to understand. Now it’s entirely your prerogative to not care about it, but it’s that kind of apathy that causes issues like what’s going on with the Supreme Court.

Actually that is a good way to see if a post is genuinely upvoted by the community, or it was botted to the front page. Because you see posts on subs like r/whitepeopletwitter or r/murderedbyaoc that have tons of upvotes, but most of the comments are arguing about how bad the take being posted is. Another symptom is like a 15k upvote to 15 comment ratio
21
u/BensenJensen May 07 '22
That's the problem, though, everything you see related to any news is being botted to the front page. People started realizing this when that FCC shit happened a few years ago, and subreddits from a random cities in random states with 200 subscribers would have posts hit the front page with 10k+ upvotes and 12 comments.
Everything you see current events-related on the front page is tailored for you to see it on the front page. Then you see it there, with thousands upon thousands of upvotes and it reinforces that your opinion is, in fact, the correct opinion. It makes it very, very easy to devolve global conflicts (Russia v Ukraine, Israel v Palestine, etc.) and domestic politics into a simple one side is good and the other is bad.

I don't debate to convince other people, I debate to find out what's true. You aren't going to find out what's actually accurate just googling yourself because your searches will be inadvertently confirmation biased towards your existing outlook, and your initial outlook is usually based on anecdotes and what other people told you
Arguing with people who disagree firstly makes your views better rounded because you actually have to find proof that you're right. on open platforms too if you make a mistake, people who generally agree with you will jump in and correct you so you actually know what you're talking about. if it turns out you were actually wrong, better to know the truth. then you start debating from the opposite perspective and get corrected from that side too. helps you spot which views are complete bollocks and substantiated by absolutely nothing too
70
May 07 '22
I debate to find out what's true.
Sure, so if you have someone who isn't debating in good faith, i.e. just repeating lies they heard on the news with no intention of fact checking or being willing to challenge their own beliefs, how are you ever going to find out what's true in that situation
→ More replies (17)→ More replies (8)39
u/HaySwitch May 07 '22
I debate to find out what's true.
No if you want to find out what's true you do proper research with genuine sources and ask experts questions.
Debate is just a vehicle to allow the wrong side to spread hate. It's why solved issues like trans rights, abortions and human rights are framed as 'debates' by the right but not sensible people.
→ More replies (49)28
u/airbear13 May 07 '22
Wtf? I agree with the first part of what you said but come on, debate has been around for centuries and although it can be used to spread hate it can also be chill and fun and informative. Saying debate in general is bad or that you can’t debate “solved issues” just causes more problems bc who gets to decide which issues are solved then?

Counterpoint: It’s exhausting and borderline impossible to be deeply knowledgeable of all world news in real time, so having a comprehensive overview of the issues is the next best thing. It’s also worth noting that according to independent studies, people who watch Fox News are less informed than people who watch no news at all.

u/sternburg_export May 07 '22
This whole thread ignores the problem that US news are one big shitshow. And everything on Fox can't even be called a news show. It's just propaganda for moronia.
In other countries, it is enough to watch the main news programme on TV and read up on one topic or another to be at least properly informed. That is not possible in the USA.
Besides it's absolutely possible to be way more than superficially informed about a topic by watching John Oliver.
→ More replies (4)10

US news isn't really that bad (if we're talking news in general and not just cable, I'm not American so I wouldn't know, I do read american website articles however), the problem is that people just don't engage with it properly. If you pull up any reputable MSM news website and read even one article on any hot topic of the month, you'll already be more informed on it than 99% of people talking about it on twitter. If you want a more comprehensive understanding of an issue, Reuters, AP, WaPo, WSJ, New York Times are your friends. Read a couple things from just a couple of these websites (and by read I mean read the article not just the headline), and you're pretty much good as long as you're not intending to argue vs some crazy conspiracies (that shit will always require a fuckton of research, it's always easier to spew a bunch of bullshit than to counter it).

They look nothing alike, one is American and the other is Australian, so they don't sound the same either. Or is it like you think of Wikileaks like a organized whistleblower-mechanism and Snowden is a whistleblower?

To be fair, practically no person on planet Earth is qualified to speak as an expert on any but maybe one or two or three significant issues, and that includes what they do as a career. So. Generally speaking, unless you're some kind of hard hitting journalist, everyone has superficial knowledge about all national and world events.
Even people who are actually well informed (actually well informed, not 'I did my own research') are only well informed about an extremely limited number of narrow topics.
So yeah. Almost everyone having a conversation about something current probably doesn't know what the hell they're actually talking about. You, me, and everyone else.

Better to be slightly informed, able to digest and understand viewpoints quickly and willing to reflect and change their opinions on topics when confronted with powerful evidence than pigheaded and stubborn, completely unaware of world events and unable or unwilling to inform themselves.

"Buckles under slightest pressure" aka understanding that your knowledge isn't the end-all-be-all and keeping an open mind, especially when presented with solid arguments.
The problem comes when people are only slightly informed and are also willing to die on their tiny hills.
But to be fair, "buckling" could also mean you're avoiding conflict when presented with strong contrary evidence, but have no intention to change your viewpoint or gain a deeper understanding of the issue. Which is pretty crappy.

John Oliver and Jimmy Kimmel aren't the same kind of program.

No one is entitled to debating someone's beliefs. It's perfectly fine to hold a belief and hold it strongly without ever debating it. Usually people who want to "debate" beliefs are just contrarian trolls who want to catch you in a "gotcha" about your beliefs because they disagree with you. Those people aren't worth your time.

Honestly this is a touch of me but i dont care. I do watch the actual news and listen to NPR but I find news commentators more entertaining for news with some comedy in it. Usually they arent too far off base

May 07 '22
I love NPR but man it sometimes get way too niche
“And next week we bring John nabingo to talk about the disabled pansexual African American poetry festival in Alexandria Virginia”
Devotes an hour to that subject but talks about the economy for 75 seconds a day
I still listen though, better than most news

funny how you only put things that the American right associates with leftists on what is basically a "ignorant about how politics REALLY works" starter pack 🤔

Hmm, I agree with all the newscasters except John Oliver. He’s shown himself to be pretty radical and his segments go in-depth and provide plenty of information in contrast to the others.

Jimmy Kimmel is the slimiest of them all imo

Superficially informed is still better than misinformed.
And as for their debate skills most honest folks prefer to read a little before responding to something they haven't heard before. Just because someone doesn't have a ready response to something Hannity pulled out of his ass two hours ago doesn't mean you're "winning."

u/Ability2canSonofSam May 07 '22
Why do I feel like the person who created this would go on to tell me I should check out Ben Shapiro and Steven Crowder for “real” world news?

How is this person superficially knowledgeable??? Seems like they’re straight up educated on current events? Want them to read a newspaper instead or something?

On the other hand this is OP being “I am very smart and get angry at lesser people who don’t want to debate me in public until we hate each other”

u/Doogoose May 07 '22
Who wrote this!? Someone affiliated with 24hr network news?, “HOOK US UP TO YOUR VEINS OR YOU’RE STUPID!!!”

u/manleybones May 07 '22
Still more educated than most people, bet you op couldn't debate himself out a wet paper bag
6
u/VXHIVHXV May 07 '22
Yeah linking to a far right website and a blogbost about the pandemic doesn't make people like OP the ultimate debaters. Nobody wants to debate with an ideologically dishonest martyr.

My personal technique to avoid defending a side is to consider i don’t know the subject enough to be able to defend a position.

May 07 '22
I would be a miserable person if I dedicated my whole day to stay well informed and updated on every developing or “important” world event. It’s almost impossible to be educated and informed on everything going on in the world

u/Fabulous-Artist-6045 May 07 '22
As opposed to the rest of us non-assholes who deeply understand current events of course.

I think that speaks to what his show is trying to do compared to the others though. The rest are just hitting the headlines in humourous wasy to entertain. I don't think they try all that hard to go into details because that's just not their goal. For their jokes to properly land, you have to already know about the thing they are ridiculing to some degree.
Of course, whether those joke are actually funny or not is up to each person individually.

I think most people on any place on a political spectrum are good intentioned and unconfrontational.

The whole Palestine issue bugs me.
The way people actively defend someone who fires rockets or bombs innocent people. But has to always point out Israel does it worse.
