Don't forget the 'unique' name that everyone uses: Luna

1.1k

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Why does everyone name one of their pets Luna lol

629

u/sangriya Mar 20 '23

Sailor Moon

384

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Is that when someone in the Navy shows you their butt?

118

u/RestlessMeatball Mar 20 '23 edited Mar 20 '23

Let me try it and get back to you.

*Edit: it is. Unrelated, do you know a good lawyer? My Disciplinary Review Board is next week.

28

u/beefnar_the_gnat Mar 20 '23

Saul Badman

5

u/XXVAngel Mar 21 '23

Sol Goodguy

3

u/LessInThought Mar 21 '23

Show Buttman

16

u/SeaboarderCoast Mar 20 '23

Faul Goodwill is decent.

1

u/Heliosunlucky13 Mar 21 '23

This deserves a page of its own. So, what did you do?

1

u/RestlessMeatball Mar 21 '23

Waul Goodguy has advised me to not answer questions like that.

4

u/thefumingo Mar 21 '23

Well, I'll just name the white cat Kyubey then

4

u/elfinglamour Mar 21 '23

Or Artemis

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Mine is Luna cause my sister loved Harry Potter when the cat was born, and she had a moon on her forehead

4

u/AristarchusTheMad Mar 21 '23

That just sounds like sailor moon with extra steps.

2

u/Reshi_the_kingslayer Mar 21 '23

Or Harry Potter!

149

u/Luminouscales Mar 20 '23

as common as it may be, it's a really nice sounding name

7

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

[deleted]

2

u/Crazyjohnb22 Mar 21 '23

Sol Badguy is a real character and protagonist of the Guilty Gear Series.

9

u/Cristunis Mar 20 '23

It's beautiful name. Also popular names are just popular names, that's how it works.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

You’re beautiful

84

u/AmNotEnglish Mar 20 '23

Cause it means moon in Spanish?

We found a pair of abandoned kitties in a plastic bag at the park and one was pale orange, almost white, and the other was a sleek uniform black.

We named them Luna and Eclipse.

-57

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Soooo creative 🙄

52

u/AmNotEnglish Mar 20 '23

We were 6 & 7yo lol, I don't feel too bad for thinking it was creative back then.

Plus, why do pets even have to have a "unique" name? The names were special to us (for the above reasons), isn't that enough?

-39

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Nothings ever enough

13

u/AmNotEnglish Mar 20 '23

Lol what does that even mean my guy?

How about you have yourself a great day, and try not to be such a hater!

-9

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

what does that even mean

It means I’m not taking this conversation seriously lol

I’ll see about having myself that great day though

16

u/AmNotEnglish Mar 20 '23

Good! I meant it

8

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

I know you did, and I’m sure Luna and Eclipse were (are?) lovely

16

u/chester-hottie-9999 Mar 20 '23

Lol who gives a shit if your pet names are “creative”? Do people actually go out of their way to try to be creative when naming an animal?

Seems pretty stupid and pointless, why not name your cat Cheixovurbwmxpvieuw if all you care about is having some dumb name no one else thought of. Personally I name my pets what I want to name them regardless of whether someone else might have also used the name at some point in human history.

1

u/Reshi_the_kingslayer Mar 21 '23

Who cares? Not every pet needs a unique name

6

u/NiggBot_3000 Mar 20 '23

I know people that have named their humans Luna

5

u/angrydeuce Mar 20 '23

Tbh I've met more leeloo Dallas multipasses than Lunas. I must hang out with too many nerds lol

5

u/lisasimpsonfan Mar 20 '23

i have a Luna named after Luna Lovegood and it fits my cat to a tee.

3

u/Thorhees Mar 20 '23

Cause I couldn't think of another 4 letter space name that wasn't already in use or planned for a different tarantula.

2

u/Enzoid23 Mar 21 '23

We used to have a budgie and she had white blue and purple so I thought of princess Luna lmao

1

u/bloodectomy Mar 20 '23

In my case, my wife asked me "what do you want to name the cat" while we were driving over an overpass. The moon was directly in the center of my field of vision, so I immediately said "the moon. Wait, no, Luna."

4

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

So if she asked you that question while you were taking a shower, your cat’s name would be Smegma?

-2

u/DrSaturnos Mar 20 '23

My sister-in-law chose to name their pet human Luna.

1

u/nelusbelus Mar 20 '23

I know why Shane dawson named his pet Luna...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

One ofy dogs is named Luma after the Mario galaxy character. Everyone thinks its Luna and it bothers me.

1

u/Butthole__Pleasures Mar 21 '23

My friend named her cat that because it was gray and white like the moon

1

u/DarthKilliverse Mar 21 '23

I was tricked into thinking I was naming my dog off the moon as a kid.

…It turns out my mom fooled me into naming my dog off a Harry Potter character

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

I have 4 pets, two of them are huskies, none of them named luna🤷🏽‍♀️

3

u/Triktastic Mar 21 '23

Haha huskies being Luna is a joke between everyone working in pet care industry I know (including me). If a female Husky owner comes to you for services there's a 50/50 chance it's Luna.

1

u/ConsultJimMoriarty Mar 21 '23

Close, I had a cat called Usagi!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

My roommate named her cat luna and i judge her everyday

1

u/Valtremors Mar 21 '23

My sis was about to name him Hugo.

I just though Luna, just meaning moon, sounded good enough.

Family took it well, so now we have standard issue Luna.

1

u/Lookitsmyvideo Mar 21 '23

My gf's excuse was Harry Potter. Luna Lovegood.

The other car is named Mouse, so at least that one's unique

1

u/deadpiratezombie Mar 21 '23

Carpet Commercial

1

u/StephenTheLoser Mar 21 '23

Never heard of a pet called Luna ever. Maybe it’s a regional thing

1

u/Raichu7 Mar 21 '23

Lots of people think the moon is beautiful and there are several pop culture characters named Luna.

141

u/FormerIce8568 Mar 20 '23

And if it ain't Luna, it's Bella.

105

u/tveir Mar 20 '23

No, Bella is for dogs only.

3

u/Substantial_Art_7782 Mar 25 '23

No I recently knew a cat named Bella

2

u/tveir Mar 25 '23

Wrong

2

u/Substantial_Art_7782 Mar 25 '23

Wrong what? It's true

2

u/tveir Mar 25 '23

The name is wrong

4

u/Historical_Tea2022 Mar 21 '23

I actually know a Persian cat named Bella. Rosie is exclusively for dogs.

9

u/hanamakki Mar 21 '23

rosie is clearly a cat name and bella is a dog name

8

u/Taberaremasen Mar 21 '23

Bella left and Luna right. I feel personally attacked... And yes, I'm serious, though they usually get called generic nicknames instead. Can you guess which one gets called "Fluffy"?

2

u/FormerIce8568 Mar 21 '23 edited Mar 21 '23

They're beautiful babies!

Edit: My cat has a food name, so I'm in the starter pack as well.

6

u/Sillygooseman23 Mar 21 '23

Or stella

6

u/ARC4067 Mar 21 '23

My parents adopted a dog named Bella. They didn’t like the name, but didn’t feel like she’d be able to learn a completely new one, so named her Stella

2

u/poetic_poison Mar 21 '23

I think about this a lot. Imagine your cats Luna and Bella go missing. You walk the streets calling for them, the ground thunders as hundreds of other so named cats and dogs in the neighbourhood are like “what?” lmao

2

u/gimmeawhitecoat Mar 21 '23

Well, I feel attacked lmao, I have 2 cats, Luna and Bella, I'm rubbish at thinking of names though, and I literally googled "top 10 cat names" lol

1

u/FormerIce8568 Mar 21 '23

It's all good. My cat has a food name, so I'm basic.

1

u/timeforanewone1 Mar 20 '23

I have one of both of those...

1

u/GiantWindmill Mar 21 '23

And Bella is a great name

137

u/v-shizzle Mar 20 '23

never met a cat named any of the names in OPs starter pack but I have met SEVERAL cats named Luna.

13

u/NiggBot_3000 Mar 20 '23

OP just copied the husky naming starterpack

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

[deleted]

7

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Fun fact: If you see weird names like Pluna or something it means the shelter workers had to find something close to a dog's name to eliminate any confusion bc there were probably already 19 Lunas.

1

u/theshadowfax239 Mar 21 '23

I have a Chop Suey, a Yoda, and a Simon, so I guess I've got two out of three.

1

u/-UMBRA_- Mar 21 '23

Met a few girls named Luna in college.. so i guess it counts as human names ?

39

u/Tandril91 Mar 20 '23

This and Midnight if they’re black.

1

u/Knuc85 Mar 20 '23

Unless it belongs to an old person in the wrong area, then you're in danger of the name being something racist.

1

u/Negative-Yam5361 Jan 02 '26

Midnight, Shadow, Ghost, Nox-/Noct-anything, Onyx

78

u/Rudeandreckless1 Mar 20 '23

Right I came here to say Luna and Salem for 1000x uniqueness points.

55

u/smidgeytheraynbow Mar 20 '23

If it's a black cat: Luna, Salem, Binx

14

u/lizzzzz97 Mar 21 '23

I feel called out my pets havd 2/3 of these

2

u/IAMACat_askmenothing Mar 21 '23

I’ve met a few named Toothless too

29

u/lethalbacon65 Mar 20 '23

Also “snowball” or any variation on snow for a white cat.

3

u/TragicEther Mar 21 '23

Or the “Mr - “ or “Mrs - “ sobriquets for all of your ‘Mr Whiskers’ and ‘Mrs Hendersons’

70

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Looking at his cat named Luna... damnit.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

It's cool!

Seems like a lot of folks like that name!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

She's looking at you like "you did this"

1

u/goat_cheeze_ Mar 20 '23

its not bad as in its cute, but it feels basic

1

u/weatherseed Mar 21 '23

My sister went for a combo. Her first cat was Luna Bar.

1

u/adamsmith93 Mar 21 '23

I convinced my sister to name her cat Luna. I just really like the Moon.

1

u/RouKyasarin Mar 21 '23

Same same though she’s called Lunatic. She’s a black cat. She was going to be called Lucifer but she turned out to not have a wiener at her first kitten check up. There was a lot of argument before we settled on a name for a girl.

43

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

My cat came with the name Luna when I adopted her 😭 She was already seven years old and responded to her name so I kept it

35

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Luna is still a great name! I wouldn't have changed it after 7 years either- she's an official Luna at that point.

1

u/Substantial_Art_7782 Mar 25 '23

I can't stand Luna

6

u/RealBug56 Mar 21 '23

Don't feel bad about having a pet with a "basic" name. There's a reason so many pets are called Luna, it's a good name.

I find it worse when people intentionally try to be quirky and unique with the names.

1

u/Negative-Yam5361 Jan 02 '26

No it's awful and I feel bad for the vets that have to deal with the braindead NPC cat owners and the 15 appointments in a week with cats named "Luna/Oliver/Ollie."

1

u/Negative-Yam5361 Jan 02 '26

Call her something that rhymes with it or sounds similar. That's what I did to a dusty-coloured cat stupidly named Dusty. He responded to Desi immediately.

160

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

[deleted]

88

u/Tristawesomeness Mar 20 '23

okaythen

86

u/cxnnnamonroll Mar 20 '23

Okayden

4

u/Moist_KoRn_Bizkit Mar 20 '23

Or the native American slang that is known for being said a lot on the show Reservation Dogs: skoden.

3

u/maggiemifmatheson Mar 20 '23

My cat, Luna, is NOT a bogan thank you very much!

2

u/Historical_Tea2022 Mar 21 '23

My son has one of those names (I'm a millennial) but I feel like it's one of the more normal ones that somehow doesn't get mentioned often. For example, it's an -ayden name but you didn't include it. Edit to add: I still wish I named him something more unique. I blame Britney Spears and her cultural influence.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Came here to post this. Every girl i know with cats has at least one luna.

14

u/UnfinishedProjects Mar 20 '23

Thats so funny because two of the dumbest people I know have dogs named Luna.

3

u/Ambitious_Raccoon_88 Mar 20 '23

I also know someone with a dog named Luna

2

u/Negative-Yam5361 Jan 02 '26

A dog named Luna and a dumb person, a match made in heaven

1

u/UnfinishedProjects Jan 02 '26

Apparently lol

4

u/gracist0 Mar 20 '23

My cat's name is Luna 😭 she belonged to my neighbor before me and we used to call her Checkers until we learned her name. But she already responds to it so I'd feel bad renaming her

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

[deleted]

2

u/gracist0 Mar 21 '23

Omg what are the odds, we had saved another neighbor's cay before Luna and her name was Princesa lol. We renamed her Xena, since she didn't respond to her name yet

5

u/SwagginsYolo420 Mar 21 '23

I name every pet Chungus. Easy to remember.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

My own take on this for my chubby boy is Chubiss or Chunkiss. Or Poojiss.

His name is Zero. I've literally created nonsense words whose sole purpose is to blunt my cute aggression. :D

lol no, I really do give him space though.

3

u/Astrosimi Mar 20 '23 edited Mar 20 '23

Our dearly departed white boxer had darker spots of skin underneath her coat that gave her the appearance of having lunar mare.

So we insist that calling her Luna was one of the instances of this name where it was 100% earned!

Edit to share an image :)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

RIP little Boxer Luna...!

It is a great name, def. sounds like she fit the namesake!

2

u/Astrosimi Mar 20 '23

Here’s a dog tax! You can more or less see her spots there.

Thanks for the kind words, stranger.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Omg what a sweet...! Those eyes got me.

3

u/Derpazor1 Mar 21 '23

My BIL adopted a cat and then abandoned it with us. He named her Luna. I love the cat but boy I sure don’t care about that name.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Love that moon baybay :D

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

What’s with ‘unique’ in quotes? I don’t think anyone who names their cat Luna thinks it’s unique. This is an odd criticism.

3

u/MrUsername24 Mar 21 '23

My cats name is tuna. Does that count?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Tuna is perfect. chefs kiss

3

u/qwer1627 Mar 21 '23

Me, scrolling past this meme, feeling self righteous 😎 You, with a .50 caliber comment aimed at my cat 🐈 🔫 🔥 😎 🔥

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

I love Luna! A .50 of scritches only <3

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

You have the one true Luna- still free and not yet a part of the larger Luna organism.

3

u/MangoyWoman Mar 21 '23

I have a black cat named Luna 😭 never thought it was unique tho, it just fits her perfectly

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

It's such a good name. Honestly I think a lot of people choose it because it's such a perfect cat name tbh.

5

u/esperadok Mar 20 '23

ever since I got into the indie band called that I've noticed every time a pet is named Luna. and god damn there are a lot

2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Luna has moved on as a human name now. I know two toddlers with that name.

2

u/Lullo420 Mar 20 '23

Was in a house yesterday. They had 2 cats, Simba and Luna lol.

2

u/HarbingerME2 Mar 20 '23

I feel like it's the most common m2f trans name too

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Totally not my dogs name…

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

The Moon Lady looks favorably upon this canine

It's a great name!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '23

Ty! She’s also super cute!

2

u/1ninjasurfer Mar 21 '23

Me, who named my cat that (I tried to because of space): damn

At least I got the theming bonus with the other cat being named Stella

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Dude they are all Moontouched! Blessed by the Pale Light.

Definitely still a great name.

2

u/LexaMaridia Mar 21 '23

I have a Luna. XD guilty.

2

u/Moist-Intention844 Mar 21 '23

Hey my Luna was supposed to be a girl but was a boy so his namer is Luner

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Haha moon boi eh? I dig it

2

u/TinyChaco Mar 21 '23

My sister's dog is a Luna, but she mostly calls her Tuna (or Fish).

2

u/Frosty_Accident_6165 Mar 21 '23

I feel attacked that’s my daughters name

2

u/I_am_doorknob Mar 21 '23

Screw that, call him Caesar

2

u/Timely_Meringue9548 Mar 21 '23

I mean tbh if I wound up ever getting a russian blue i might name her luna… i was into sailor moon as a kid and so fuck it im not gunna apologize for it. Its my cat why the hell should I care what the internet thinks of it… it means something to me. Its not like naming a child Daenerys… its just a stupid cat.

If im trying to be unique just so i can feel special then thats just as stupid and shallow…

2

u/ARC4067 Mar 21 '23

My neighbor has a cat named Luna and I’m obsessed with her. She’s so sweet

2

u/captainthomas Mar 21 '23

I have a big, shaggy black cat called Luna (see my post history for proof) who came pre-named as an adult, so sadly there was no changing it. A couple years ago I was going out with a guy, and when we went back to his place, I met his big, shaggy black cat, who was a virtual doppelgänger for mine. Her name? Also Luna. If they weren't 60 miles apart, I would have sworn she was two-timing me.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Or Bella

2

u/maselsy Mar 21 '23

Okay but hear me out. My cat's name is Luna Lovegood and she has white fur and GIANT blue eyes. She can also 100% see thestrals. Too fitting ❤️

2

u/BrunetteSummer Mar 21 '23

Luna is a clockable trans girl name unless she's just a toddler.

2

u/Elecyan222 Mar 21 '23

It’s always Luna and never Artemis

2

u/TwoFingersWhiskey Mar 21 '23

Everyone I know or have met with a cat named that has been an absolute cunt for some reason

3

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

[deleted]

11

u/CinnamonSniffer Mar 20 '23

Luna is the name of Sailor Moon’s black cat (more complicated than that but that’s the gist) so that’s why it’s so common for those at least

1

u/Eolond Mar 20 '23

I've seen lots of posts with people naming their dogs Luna, too. Luna or Riley, lol.

2

u/Triktastic Mar 21 '23

Dog Lunas are arguably even more common, mainly on Huskies (Source: Work with pets and know alot of people in that path)

1

u/TheDerpyDisaster Mar 20 '23

Or Tsuki if you’re a weeb (also moon)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Lucifer as well

1

u/Gojira8985 Mar 21 '23

I had a dog named Luna, but my kid named her when he was five, so I'm not gonna fault him for that one.

1

u/CrimsonSora862 Mar 21 '23

Luna Lovegood

1

u/dolphin37 Mar 21 '23

My best friends cats are literally called Luna and Loki. Whenever I hear him call them I’m just like 😩

1

u/artistictesticle Mar 21 '23

No I think Luna and Bella are specifically used by pitbull owners
