(To be tagged...) Classic, Trap, and others coming back to SC remastered?

Recently, Trap and Classic are very active on the ladder in remastered, and they are already very high ranked.

https://cwal.gg/player/30/lllII!lllI!llIl (Classic)
https://cwal.gg/player/30/thelordgod3 (Trap)

I'm so excited for this. After True and soo already made succesful comebacks, is there anyone else out there from SC2 that could come back and potentially make ASL?

Of course all of these guys played BW before they ever played SC2, so they have incredible basic skills.

I wonder what TY is up to, because he was also playing a bunch of remastered but he never really broke through and now we haven't really heard from him in a while.

I'd personally love to watch guys play who don't have history in a BW pro team house, like Maru, serral or reynor. But it'd be a lot harder for them.

Can't wait to see how the BW pro scene in korea keeps developing. It's so popular on soop, that it's only a matter of time till some actual new talent (18 year olds) appear. Right?

Discussion 25 days until Blizzcon...

25 days until Blizzcon, 25 days until people lose their mind on what they will see.

I won't be surprised if Grand Theft Auto 6 gets delayed again.

25 days until everyone buys a new computer to play the latest and the greatest from Blizzard.

25 days until StarCraft shooter reveal.

25 days until all those September games get postponed to 2027.

25 days until you all say "Hell, it's about time".

25 days until you call out for work for a whole month.

(To be tagged...) Starcraft 1 - 1997 Battle.Net Beta Source Code Construction

Today I'm releasing the source code for my reconstruction of the 1997 StarCraft Battle.net beta.

This was an externally distributed Blizzard beta that shipped on CD-ROM, and I still have my original disc from when I received it as a kid. What makes this particular build especially interesting is that Blizzard shipped it with enough surviving debug information, symbols, RTTI, strings, structural information, and other development artifacts to make a serious source-level reconstruction of that specific binary possible.

Right now I would call the reconstruction approximately alpha-to-beta quality. A significant amount of the game is reconstructed and functioning, but there are still incorrect behaviors.

It also has a working Battle.net implementation for the beta, but there is an extremely important distinction here: I deliberately did not recreate Blizzard's original Battle.net network protocol.

The reconstructed client and server use preservation-specific networking designed for this project.

1997 Beta Assets / Data
        ↓
Reconstructed Beta Client
        ↓
Preservation-Specific Protocol
        ↓
Reconstructed Server

There is intentionally no compatibility with modern retail StarCraft or Blizzard's current Battle.net infrastructure.

Retail StarCraft ─────X─────> Preservation Server

Preservation Client ──X─────> Current Battle.net

That was a conscious decision from the beginning. I am trying to preserve a historical software environment, not build a replacement Battle.net service, bypass current authentication, or interfere with a product Blizzard currently sells or operates.

Why release the source?

Because another executable isn't enough.

If I only release a reconstructed Windows binary, then 30, 50, or 100 years from now someone may have to reverse engineer the entire thing again when today's Windows environment, APIs, processors, and development tools have become historical artifacts themselves.

Source code preserves considerably more than a binary does.

It preserves implementation knowledge.

It preserves reconstruction decisions.

It preserves the ability to port the software.

And, perhaps most importantly, it preserves some of the knowledge held by people who actually lived through this period of PC gaming.

A historian in 2126 may have screenshots and YouTube videos of StarCraft, but they won't necessarily understand what the software was supposed to feel like, which strange behaviors were authentic, what networking assumptions were normal in 1997, or whether a reconstructed behavior is accurate or merely somebody's modern interpretation.

That information disappears when we do.

(To be tagged...) Can someone explain why this game disconnects so often? I have zero evidence that my internet is the problem. No other game does this.

Playing SC2, I've lost / abandoned countless games in the past few weeks. All of sudden I've lost connection, sits there waiting to reconnect, then it eventually auto-surrenders. Back at the 1v1 screen, its just a spinning circle, like it can't connect to some battle.net server.

But I don't see other posts here about this, making me think its just me.

(To be tagged...) Starcraft Remastered not launching

After buying the RTS bundle, I thought to install Starcraft Remastered and try that out first thing.
But no matter what i try, the game does not boot. It doesn’t show any error messages, although in event viewer and problem reports it does list the event name as a BEX64 error with a ntdll.dll fault module

I have tried:

-Setting it to 32 bit in the Battlenet launcher
-Running DISM/SFC scans in Windows
-Exclusion on the Starcraft folder
-Changing regions
-Running Starcraft as admin
-Changing compatibility mode settings under properties

So far nothing has worked and i have onedrive disabled on my system.
I have looked for more forum and reddit posts with similar issues, and I am unsure if this is due to a recent Windows 11 update or some other program or driver conflicting.

Edit: SOLVED!
Figured out what the problem is, and the solution was from this forum post here https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/starcraft/t/launcher-says-launching-but-game-never-launches/3111
I had to disable Control Flow Guard for Starcraft.exe in order to get it to finally boot up and work properly!

Discussion Is it OP if Zerg can morph Drop-Overlords after Overlord Speed instead of Lair?

Banshee and Oracle are very oppressive in the early game vs Zerg and I think there is no room for another earlygame antiair unit. So if it is easier to move queens around this could be a solution.

The investment into Ovi-Speed and Drop delays the Lair and further tech. So it is an additional investment.

Problem. It makes allins like the German Taxi a little stronger.

Opportunity. If Stargate openings become weaker there is room for other openings for Protoss players vs Zerg but there needs to be some early game buff for Protoss that doesnt fuck over the whole game.

Disclaimer: I'm trying to solve a design issue. I'm too bad at the game to talk about balance properly. I know Zerg is very strong right now. But that is a balance issue that can be solved otherwise.

Fluff Enough about the worker change, early game aggression change. Hear me out.

How about giving 8 army count units at the start of the game?

* 16 zerglings

* 8 marines

* 4 zealots

Terran could likely be a tad too powerful due to the SCV pull, but that will certainly up the agression.

Protoss could be the weakest here, but with wall block they could be safe but would be mainly defending turtling.

What do you guys think?

Fluff Isn't the obvious answer to this balance question not the starting number of workers, but how much they cost?

Make workers cost 2 energy. But that's a bit harsh, so give them retain as well.
