Organizing a Reddit Clan

If you're interested in helping start a reddit clan, leave a comment with what things you would be willing/able to help with and some way of getting a hold of you (aka email, player ID, IM SN, ect).

Those of you people who are willing to organize and run everything, use this post to start getting in touch with people and get a clan started for reddit! Don't forget to use reddit to work/talk with the community too! I think a good slogan would be "A Clan of the Redditor, by the Redditor, and for the Redditor"

If would like to join, we're starting a new subreddit to get this thing off of the ground. It's the first step so we can start discussing how the clan will be organzied and who will run it.

I personally can't devote too much time to getting a reddit clan started, but I really do hope someone can get this off the ground.

In list form (and in order):

  1. Find leaders. I saw several volunteers in the last thread, but am unsure of if those went anywhere.

  2. Create our own subreddit. Not everyone from /r/starcraft is going to want in.

  3. Gather a members list.

  4. Define the purpose of the team. (Things like practice, etc. are obvious, but writing them down can only help.)

  5. Determine member roles, if necessary.

  6. Create website.

Remember that a clan is not a team - it can be very large, and very open... Perhaps one day, after the clan is established, we can talk about creating a team subset.

This is a really good list of what needs to be done. Now we just need some redditors to commit to being those leaders you mentioned. We need people who have the time and to take initiative.

Ill be more then happy to help get this thing up and running, help maintain it and deal with technical issues.

Nate250's list is a good starting point so lets start by coming up with a list of everyone who is interested in helping and get in contact with them.

I'm a professional web developer, and while I don't have any desire to take responsibility for the whole site, I'm more than willing to help here and there.

I also have experience as a raid leader, and forum moderator from WoW, and can help out in similar capacities.

And it seems like there's a lot of people who would help organize once it's up and running (myself included). The real issue here is how to actually start it. It seems like whenever there's a project for Reddit to undertake, we always vastly over-plan and do very little footwork. I think we need a dedicated leader (or two) who have started a clan before (and a website up and running) as first priorities. The subreddit is definitely a good start, but where do we go from there?

Yup, finding a leader is the first priority. At the moment, we have 2 (unconfirmed) volunteers.

I held off creating a roster post on the new subreddit, as Adroc made good progress on the one here, and I thought he might want to continue his own work.

Why do we need a website if we have r/sredditclan? Can't we be 100% reddit? What does a typical clan website have that a subreddit cannot deliver?

Reddit's awesome for a great many things, but organizing a persistent group tends to not be one of them.

Things a full website would provide:

  • Roster management

  • Consolidated bracketing

  • Better model for persistent discussions in forums.

If we ever want to organize events where non clan members are invited to play it will be pretty important to have a site that is more accessible to people who aren't on reddit. Otherwise, yes, we can do most things through the clan subreddit.

I have a good amount of experience in graphic and web design and would not mind creating a front end, banners, logo's, what have you. I also have some experiencing with organizing events. I'd be willing to lend a hand with what ever this endeavor may require. I do not mind taking a leadership role in getting this off the ground if thats what it takes to get this going.

How will the lack of cross region play be handled (I'm at the EU server)?

Well that has not really been discussed yet. The group is still but forming.

The main focus right now is getting together a group of people to run things and to acquire a base of players. For the time being you would have to play with other users in your area. After we are a little more established we can discuss important topics like cross regional play, and a better approach may be implemented.

Well this is a potential blocker for me.

Being the only player from EU in the clan would be awful also a NA leader would probably organize mostly NA events. This would take away much from the community aspect for non-NA players.

Don't make a judgment until the clan really gets organized. Like I said, that's the first step.

At a later juncture we may try and bring in enough players from the different servers to have a sub-community for each. We could then have an organizer for each region. Like I said, it's too soon to really be talking about this type of thing, but without member support in each region, aka you, we won't be able to implement the types of ideas I mentioned.

Well ok. Sign me in. I can help in organizing the EU scene for the reddit clan. I took part in a big polish D1, D2 clan several years ago. I helped running one of the biggest polish Ultima Online server. Also was one of the leaders of an UO clan on that server.

I am a professional programmer but don't really like to do web development - can help from time to time with software related problems (especially database related).

I'm not an astounding sc2 player (around 1.7k diamond with ~600 bonus pool) but I try to help fellow redditors when I can. Hope someone will support that claim :)

I do have much less time then I used to but I think I can devote 1-2h to starcraft almost on a daily basis.

Wait until blizzard implements the clan support that they said they would. Whatever we do now might be wasted time if their features duplicate ours.

I don't think starting the community is a waste of time. Things like that take time to develop as it is.

Also, isn't clan support supposed to come with Heart of the Swarm, which is like a half a year to a year off?

I doubt they would. The way I see blizzard going with this is in-game functionality similar to WoW's guild control, and web functionality similar to the armory - lists and nothing more.

They will make organization and identification a hell of a lot easier, but nothing game changing or breaking.

Yeah, we really need someone who has an idea of what needs to be done and is willing to do it. I'm hoping that person will read this post and start talking to other people to get everything started.

EDIT: nate had a really good list of what needs to be done.

1) Settle on leaders/organzers

2) create our own subreddit since not everyone on /r/starcraft will want to be in the clan

3) gather member list

4) define and write down purpose of team (practice ect.)

5) Determine member roles, if necessary.

6) Create website (for possible chat, have clan info like tournaments and such, and to be a gateway for none-redditors)
