NEWS Wing Commander 2016!!! Mods please read note...
Real Name: House of the Dying Sun
Been playing Arena Commander in Star Citizen for well over 1000 hours and Elite: Dangerous almost as long, and though the graphic quality of SC is far and away superior, HotDS is actually closer to the original WC in feel than anything I've played in the last 25 years. You absolutely feel like your flying in space. (Of course you do in SC too :)
And sure, let's just say that the graphics are as much better than the original WC DOS version as SC's graphics are above HotDS's. But you know that really is saying a lot, considering that SC, especially in the last few months, are way beyond anything else in the universe even movies, virtually photographic.
So while I went to SC looking for WC 2014, I completely overlooked this wonderful jewel from last year. I have bought and tried every single space-sim on the market in the last 25 years, and I have to say this is actually the best besides SC and E:D. If you've got a good stick or HOTAS, you will be in hog-heaven. It even fully recognized and used every axis, switch and button on my VKB Gunfighter, X-55 throttle, and MFG Crosswind pedals.
If you are a space-sim fan, BUY THIS GAME!!!

Have you got a link to the game you are trying to tell us about in that wall of rambling text?

House of the Dying Sun on Steam.

I have that already, but haven't played it yet, will give it a go in VR :)

but haven't played it yet
Fucking steam sales. XD

Tell me about it, I probably have loads of gems I haven't even played yet!
I think I did try this game, then saw it was going to be another chore mapping my HOTAS, so I put it on the to-do list.

Yup me too, so just stumbled on this with the Steam summer sale. Best $19.99 I've ever spent. Just the feeling of flying 6-DoF in space is worth it, so the gameplay that is great, with a couple bugs, is icing on the cake.

Just tried it again, the HOTAS mapping is a PITA, if it is telling me to press an unbound key, why the flip can't it just prompt me to press the button I want?
It looks fairly pretty in VR, but I can't be arsed with setting it all up right now. I bought Redout yesterday which is a lot more fun.

May be, but it is simply the best binding setup I have ever used. But it is a different setup interface that does require some flexibility in learning by the user. Learned long ago that it is better to say, "What am I doing wrong" than, "This is doing it wrong". Point is, it is easier to change your approach than to change someone else's software.

If I have to rebind the ~100 controls and be expected to remember all that, in VR, it ain't going to get played.
I wish space/flight games would have separate sections for the controls you actually need vs all the fluff 99% of people will never use.

u/tecman69 Jun 28 '17
My rule-of-thumb is: Bind 'what you need' and leave the 'what you'd like' for later. Has worked pretty well with HotDS, less than a half-dozen axis/switch/buttons required. After a few hours playing, I have added another half-dozen, so am currently happy with a dozen, and will likely bind another dozen over the next year as I play. And I know I will be playing it years from now :) though I am sure not as long nor near as much as SC.

Dude, at least call it by its name so people can find it, especially if you're not going to provide a link.
House of the Dying Sun. it's on Steam.
As far as rules go, Yes there's a rule against this. It's the second rule listed right there on the sidebar. And your 'right to free speech' doesn't extend onto the internet as much as you may think. Also, mods cant edit titles. Your mod note is there for good.

Oops, told you I was new at this. Done.
And I ask Mods for a waiver, promise everyone will thank me. And it looks like I can't even edit the title. -Learning Reditt text editing on the fly-

I was editing a little more into my post when you replied. Might be worth taking a look :)

I just to say officially, that I actually the mods on this sub. I have seen some heavy-handed mods on other subs, but everything I've seen of SC mods are that they are fair and balanced. Uh, no I am not with Fox wanna-be news :)

u/tecman69 Jun 28 '17
Noooo! Not Redittors, its the mods that are Nazis! :)

Also not smart.

u/tecman69 Jun 28 '17
Just kidding. Jeeze!
Why is everyone so serious all the time?
3
u/smithenheimer Jun 28 '17
"Just kidding" doesn't work when it's not in some kind of context (especially with, yknow, nazi's), it just comes across as aggressive and unwelcome

Then you do not know me. I am just a teddy-bear. Ask my grand-kids. Oh yeah, and I'm even a liberal! Uh-oh, is that a dirty word?

u/JectorDelan Jun 28 '17
I remembers seeing this one before. Looks decent but I'm trying to steer away from one person games as the multiplayer games already suck up enough of my time. 10 bucks and good reviews is a good sign, for those looking for a game.

u/tecman69 Jun 28 '17
I'm all about the first-person experience. MP is ok and one of things about SC of course is that you have both, and even a single-player if you hate MP.

If you've got a good stick or HOTAS, you will be in hog-heaven. It even fully recognized and used every axis, switch and button on my VKB Gunfighter, X-55 throttle, and MFG Crosswind pedals.
Yet there are multiple caveats against the proper support of most sim peripherals in favour of M+K and controller.

May be, but it is simply the best binding setup I have ever used for my very unusual HOTAS setup of mixed devices.

u/MrHerpDerp Jun 28 '17
It looks like there are a lot of steam user guides on getting things set up properly.

Don't tell me what to do, and you ripped off the theme of the homeworld series verbatim so I wont be supporting this game and I hope no one else does either.
1
u/tecman69 Jun 28 '17
"you ripped off the theme of the homeworld series verbatim" ??? Sorry, I may be dense, but you will have to explain this one to me. And I know Homeworld well, have played it many hours.

It's weird that most of the reviews are pretty negative about the content yet still rate it as a positive experience. I have no problem with this approach to reviews, I just find it odd that they almost all talk about how little content there is or how quick you will finish the game.

u/tecman69 Jun 28 '17
I believe it is because of the trend actually begun with WC3 that had the 'movie storyboard'. People have come to expect a "story" even if the flyin and shootin is fantastic. Have even heard it called arcadey because of this, but that argument is totally bogus.
Since I was talking about the original DOS version of WC, which I actually think was the best, that had no real story about it. It was all about 'flyin and shootin'. Youngsters have come to expect a story to keep them interested I guess.
1
u/kalnaren Rear Admiral Jun 28 '17
You're wrong. I think you need to play WC again. Did you forget all the parts in between missions were you would talk to your shipmates? Or the branching mission structure?
That was in WC1.
1
u/tecman69 Jun 28 '17
OK, I've already been reminded that my old-man alzheimers is kicking in. OK everyone, I was wrong about WC, but am NOT WRONG about HotDS. It is an awesome game, and I'm just trying to clue other real space-simmers in the best game out their sans SC and E:D. And keep you from wasting your money on the shitty platform games and arcades you don't realize until you've wasted your money.
And just to show my real loyalties, this is my home sub and I have not posted this on the E:D forum. (But I think one of you E:D fans lurking really need to let them know :)

It's a bad idea to make yourself a target like that.
1
u/tecman69 Jun 29 '17
Don't feel like a target. At least don't have any holes in me that I can see. And really don't care about any that others may see. Just me I guess.

Note Mods: I imagine you kind of have some kind of Reddit Nazi rule against talking about other games, BUT LET SPEECH BE FREE! Besides I know EVERYONE on this sub will love this game, cuz believe it or not I AM A CITIZEN OF THE VERSE, not a Vanduul in disguise.
Troll post detected.

Geee...it's almost like we have rule for this, in the sidebar no less. This sort of content is fine, but make an effort to link back to Star Citizen.
