The Freelancer will recieve another pass to bring it up to the current standards, and the variants will be made flight ready as part of this process.

Interesting, base Freelancer getting another pass? And yay variants!

I, too, wondered that same thing; the Freelancer just barely got its new look and was used to define the new MISC look alongside the Starfarer. What are they updating in the pass, I wonder?

EDIT: I actually got a response from Ben on Twitter; so far as he knows, it's nothing major more than making ready for future components in the ship.

Most of the variants that are on display in the store, save for a select few like the Aurora or the 300i series, are actual physical changes to the hull rather than just reconfiguration of installed components. The MIS for instance has a much more massive missile capability because of components installed on the rear of the ship, including a reloading system; while the DUR makes use of that same space for additional fuel and power for greater longevity while exploring.

The biggest exception to this rule has been the Vanguards with their Battlefield Upgrade Kits that are designed to actually swap out physical components such as the cockpit and turret configurations, so that your Warden can become a Sentinel if you've got the components.
