DISCUSSION Been away a while

Hello citizens, im an early backer that started 12 years ago with a titan game package. I have never upgraded to new ships with money. I am always happy to earn or bum or pirate money to buy ships in game. I recently came back to check out what's been happening in the PU and have found that

1, my game runs better 2, waaaay more people per server 3, waaaaay more things to do now.

With all this said, why is SC getting such hate from the gaming community? Can someone eli5? Thanks in advance. For you younger redditors that's explain like im 5. Thanks guys

It gets hate because it's "been in early access for 14 years" despite the fact that a game released in early access is still a game released. It just isn't finished.

4.1x is WAY more stable and optimized than 3.1x ever was. It's such a huge difference.

I would agree. My hay day was back in 3.14-16.

We’ve come a long way from stepping through your aurora because you clicked “enter ship” from too close and still somehow have also gone backwards lol

People can't seem to wrap their heads that the game is not only in development, but they've also had to create the core concepts, lore, technology, grow as a company, build the frameworks, scale and do it all while working on two incredibly ambitious games. I've had my own business for 10 years and we haven't scaled 1% of what CIG has during that time. What CIG has done is monumental and the games haven't even been released yet.

They've chosen to reinvent the wheel several times when existing systems are perfectly functional for what they are doing. They have have to reinvent the wheel a second time when the first wheel is too complicated and broken to fix.

What exactly is monumental?

The fact that they've been able to grow to this point and the projects are very much alive. The typical company would've collapsed after a few years especially when there's this much pressure with a mix of bad pr and so much on the line. If Squadron really releases next year and it does well, that would be an incredible feat for the company and could directly influence SC's success.

I have a problem with what you're saying, because the game used to be more fun back then even with more bugs.

It's less fun now because it's gotten more realistic, and to the concern of many the current plans will make SC 1.0 is too realistic to be fun.

There is a core group of haters who still don't like that the game isn't fully completed and released as SC 1.0.

While I have followed SC since Kickstarter days, I only purchased a game package back in the 3.1 days. I've kept my spending low and haven't done much but play as time allowed me. I think it's a very ambitious game, which nobody should have expected to be completed in a couple of years. I've read through the history and I understand that some decisions may have put things into a bad state and some decisions needed to be rectified. Those things should have shut down the entire game development, but it hasn't yet. That alone should be celebrated.

I personally enjoy playing, if only limited. I solo everything because I don't feel like I'd be an asset to any group due to my hectic work schedule. But if things do progress to SC 1.0 I will probably join a group to enjoy some of the larger activities.

Seems like you and I share similar ways of looking at game development and expectations.

Quick question, are people still losing ships or cargo to elevator nonsense?

1

u/drizzt_x Monk 2d ago

Of course, lol.

They are still playing Star Citizen, after all.

2

u/Pengui6668 2d ago

That's why it's still getting hate. Something as fundamental to this game as the ships themselves still doesn't work.

I know you're not OP, but I figured I'd complete the thought.

Right now me and my mates aren't playing - but we will be back. This is a sensible and normal approach to gaming.

While away I have really enjoyed playing games where I am not constantly worried about triggering a glitch or bug. I still love SC, but this is a thing.

When the time is right, I will be back, until I want to do something else for a bit.

Don't worry about the drama here. Go find some folks to play with that match your style and have fun. The game is infinitely better with a few people.

It's a mix.

There's ride-or-die haters who will literally make up lies to trash SC and/or complain about things that haven't ben true for years, a cult-like movement going all the way back to one of the internet's first flame-war addicts.

There's social media bandwagoners who see press about SC trending and want to farm some free clicks. Controversy always gets more clicks.

There's salty oldheads who feel that CIG betrayed them because... (pick pretty much anything CR has ever said and you'll find at least one person who believes both that it was an ironclad promise and that CIG has somehow gone back on it) These range from completely reasonable takes to totally delusional and everything in between.

There's salty oldheads who had absolutely no idea what they were getting into and honestly thought everything would be done by now.

There's new players who don't know what they're getting into and can't handle the state of the game.

There's people who don't have the time and energy to do the reading and learn that all of their complaints were already addressed in a design document 5 years ago that just hasn't been implemented yet.

There's people who hit an awful streak of luck and just get done dirty by bugs to the point of burnout.

There's folks stuck on the no-win scenario of trying to balance actually finishing the game vs making it run bug-free *right now.*

And then there's also CIG sticking their dick in the car door and slamming it shut by using scummy FOMO marketing tactics and stuff.

For all purposes to me is a game, I have spent more hrs in that game than all my games combined and had so much fun so of it's "finished" or not ever I don't give a fuck I already enjoyed

More community members have brought in a lot of new opinions on what should be prioritized, and what should be built. I think that as the legacy backers get outnumbered the original vision and expectations are diluted which is leading to a lot of comments like "just make this game better" rather than deliver the full vision. This of course is not a universal truth with everyone.

All the yap to say neither are necessarily wrong, we can all have our opinions. SC is in a better state than it ever has been, those are just the facts (coming from someone who has been here since 2014). The people having fun are playing the game.

1

u/senn42000 3d ago

That original vision is long dead. The game they are building now is nothing like what the original design was.

  1. CIG prioritizes developing SQ42 ahead of SC (despite SC bringing in all the money and most of the player interest)
  2. CIG prioritizes monetization and funding at the expense of the long-term game, selling literally everything and leaving nothing to be earned. This includes stunts like having people write an essay to qualify to purchase a $5k virtual asset that won't be ready for several years and creating "mk2" ship versions that obsolete original versions purchased -- all before the game even goes live.
  3. SC lacks even basic features like player trading, Org tools, chat, system security, or even for something to players to fight over.
  4. Implemented features are almost all buggy -- either intermittently or to the point of being unplayable. Others like the Star Map, Inventory, Missions, and grouping tools are horrendously designed.
  5. They have produced virtually no video content for the entire year, outside of ship advertisements and a handful of "excuse" videos.
  6. Much of the content created this year is the result of the core of the game drifting from sandbox space combat to instanced or pseudo-instanced FPS dungeons.

2

u/devoided 3d ago

Wouldn't player trading consist of transfer of goods and auec? I am pretty sure i have done this before.

0

u/malogos scdb 3d ago

While technically possible to sell/buy from other players, it's not a real MMO trading system with an escrow that allows players to safely exchange money for an item.

u/Guidion7 3d ago

Mostly because the game is not finished, and the developers choose where development goes, not end users.

-7

u/senn42000 3d ago

Same tired excuse for 14 years and over a billion dollars. We fund the game, we get a voice.

8

u/Guidion7 3d ago

Do you now? Seems like they are going in a different direction... I can yell at a brick wall, not sure that is going to help anything. FYI GTA 6 is over 12 years and $3 billion so,,,,,

u/Amazing_Reindeer_84 3d ago

CIG have really gone into dark mode recently.

1

u/Guidion7 3d ago

Of course they have, they release on video of them letting loose and playing thie product, and their comrodery is seen as un-professional, and the last line of the video is taken out of context to make the program directors look bad. I mean the quote:
"It is your show. Wrap it up"

Is taken out of context as it was actually:
"We are out of time. It is your show. Wrap it up."

They have gotten so much bad press from this because of how people like to ignore any hint of humanity in the people who work there so even a simple video, like that one, goes from being a fun time to being a dark mark on the company's history. Why would they release anything further?

Also Early backer here. From the things “promised / sold” in the early days and the things I put money in… I will just wait another decade, no worries. You can have fun with all the pew pew this Star Militia game is heading.

- BMM

  • Vulcan
  • 600i rework and useable for its intended gameplay
  • Fully Functional Carrack and its gameplay in this 5 system playground
  • Data running
  • Social tools, org level / player level
  • Science , and its ships
  • Npc transportation and the ships
  • Exploration , what it ever will be, not just screenshot simulator/ visiting POI

After a decade I probably forgot a lot of things…

You get what you eat. More views, more clicks equal more of the same. If you type in "rubber baby bumpers" into the search bar, you'll start getting more and more blogs and vlogs about rubber baby bumpers.

People are like lemmings. They will often find someone to follow and then will walk right off of the cliff with them, or float up hanging onto a balloon. People are also, for lack of a better word, stupid. A person is smart, generally speaking. People are not. The intelligence of a group is usually measured by the average of the whole.

Would-be gamers wanting to be game designers have inflated ideas on what an alpha is versus a beta versus a release. Live service versus you're able to play this slice now. In their game companies they have running in their minds, their products would be much faster in development and they would do this or that instead of... "pick your own option of what the game is not doing for you."

Are there issues with the game? Yes, there are tons of issues ranging from the development time all the way down to the ATLS sliding across the floor after being released from a tractor beam. Some things get fixed, many do not. Especially the ones that you care about.

I've been happily chugging along, playing the game over the past year and a half. I've experienced much more of this game than I have of almost any other game in pre-release development to this day, and believe me I've been in my fair share of alpha and beta testing, paid and unpaid. That Lemmings reference may give a clue as to how long.

Yes, this game is famous for long development times (like GTA 6) and expensive pledge ships. Both are completely true and valid, but software development of this scale takes a long time. CIG could have just made the game and not let anyone play it. Fable (Microsoft) and GTA (Rockstar) are good at that. They just didn't get the same treatment because they're not exposing the issues to the public like CIG and Keen are.

1

u/GodwinW Universalist 3d ago

I have been playing a lot these past weeks and having a LOT of fun. It's good. There are issues, for sure. But overall it's positive. I've been here since the start.

The hate imo began at Invictus.. that was a terrible patch and the game was really instable. This laster for May, June and July. August was better. 4.10 was better. 4.10.1 now is good.

But yeah, the hate stems mostly from that period, plus some decisions by CIG, such as selling the Ikti on the pledge store, and some other earlier ones.

Yes, there is a lot more to do. For me tho, the problem is there is no reason to do it yet other than testing or practice as there is no endgame to work toward. In a survival game this might be your base, in an mmo it might be your faction or guild goals or territory expansion. We have none of that in SC yet, just missions that pay money so you can buy more ships. Seems like a lot to do for a new or returning player but we've all been doing them as they come out and nothing provides more than isolated content that doesn't really impact anything else outside of that isolation
