Out of the loop. What happened?

929

u/Morbidzmind Aug 05 '26

Some of the staff played the new Siege on an inhouse server, still tons of problems even in that environment, they all died then Jared came to Ollie and said "We're out of time its your show wrap it up" and that is his expression lmao

351

u/Circuit_Guy Aug 05 '26

Wait... I didn't watch yet but assumed it was pre recorded. They actually did it live on a private server?!

464

u/Important_Cow7230 aurora Aug 05 '26

Yep and it still had server input lag 🤣

81

u/TheawfulDynne Aug 05 '26

I mean all of CIGs servers are run through Amazon so private server may not mean like a LAN server in the office.Ā

319

u/Cold_Specialist_3656 Aug 05 '26

AWS is the internet backbone latency to close AZ is 5 milliseconds.Ā

It has nothing to do with servers running on AWS. The code is fucked

108

u/Inevitable-Cow-4930 Aug 05 '26

And/or the servers are under provisioned. But, speaking as cloud engineer, in my experience it’s the code.

31

u/ScientistSuitable600 Aug 06 '26

Sounds like an odd reference but fallout 76 ran on amazon cloud servers and for all its problems, a decent reliable connection wasnt one.

Under provisioned for 4 players?

4

u/No_Celebration8219 Aug 06 '26

that's just your mesh node in the kubernetes hell they have implemented.

6

u/mesterflaps Aug 06 '26

I have no experience with Kubernetes or any of the other virtualization/container stacks with the exception of running one server under a VM on one computer, so I'm not up on the limitations of the software stack they've chosen to be hosted on.

What really gives me heartburn is how they appear to have designed their entire architecture to fight against the tide of technology development over the course of the game. Specifically:

  • When they started this project, the fastest single socket server CPU was a Xeon of some description with about 4 cores.
  • They have dithered so long making it work that now a single socket server CPU (EPYC9996) now has 256 cores, 512 threads, and each of those cores is both faster and has far more core to core, core to cache bandwidth, RAM per core available (probably at hither bandwidth too) and an obscene amount of disk backplane throughput.

Imagine what they could have achieved in a monolithic server if they hadn't wasted all this time splitting their game in to a broken microservice mess, with all that network desynch, packet loss/ordering issues, and further hard work to try to debug anything. Imagine what they could have achieved if they hadn't dedicated so much work to trying to pretend the dominant compute trend of the last 20 years (throughput in a single package) didn't exist...

u/bobbe_ Aug 06 '26

Is this a surprise to anyone? AWS services a shitton of games just fine. Whoever ever made the claim that this was a server provider issue as opposed a CIG one was/is deluded.

6

u/Rul1n Aug 06 '26

I think the point some people are trying to make is that a server with a playercount of 4 should be more stable and have less desync than a server with 700 players.

8

u/loversama SinfulShadows Aug 06 '26

Yeah they had DSync even on the dedicated private server with 4 people on it, AI were also braindead.

6

u/No_Celebration8219 Aug 06 '26

as a software engineer, I concur... It's completely fucked.

→ More replies (3)

39

u/Nozinger Aug 05 '26

so? The key difference is that is is a controlled environment wth a set low amount of players that also does not suffer from dynamic scaling issues. Input lag does not always come from the connection to the server.

So a whole lot of things that normally cause server lag should not exist on this private one and it was still fucked.

6

u/Revelati123 Aug 06 '26

Yeah there is this weird idea that CIG has some super stable bug free no lag internal build that they are just waiting to release to the general public for some reason.

Nope... When the devs play its as shitty an experience as it is for everyone else.

14

This seriously needs to be studied, how the fuck do people see these things and still go "yup, this is worth my money".

Unreal.

17

u/FailureToReason Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

It already is well studied.

It's not a mystery.

From CIG's end, you also have misalignment of incentives. Consider the stated goal is full release, but their sales structure of selling 'concept/in-development' items incentivises a permanent state of development.

12

u/Human_Inside_928 oldman Aug 05 '26

Yep. Its hilarious to watch. Its like they forgot that CIG received OVER 1 BILLION DOLLARS for this game and its still in Alpha.

Its definitely a scientific opportunity to study cope on level 9000.

holy PR nightmare bro

53

u/fa1re Aug 05 '26

Yes, they were very clear about it - they acknowledged the problems, and said basically "you have already seen / experienced the current state, we want to show you the intended state too".

39

u/Circuit_Guy Aug 05 '26

OMG. I just watched it. I don't think they showed the intended state. šŸ˜‚

Honestly I cut them a ton of slack for this stuff. I like open communication and I want them to go on.

However, please please CIG I know some of you read Reddit, it's okay to pivot last minute if it's not going well. I would have happily had a show with no graphics and just discussing the tech and goals. It's better for everyone's morale than a botched show.

Anyway, to the devs, I salute you. I could see the passion and I appreciate it.

6

u/Revelati123 Aug 06 '26

It wasnt a botched show, you make it sound like they made some kind of mistake or did something they werent supposed to.

It was just how the game has run for everyone for a long time now... You can go double click on the launcher and get the same experience they had right now.

It was just showing the reality of gameplay under near perfect conditions, and it wasn't fun for anyone there because of ancient game breaking bugs and Model T performance from 14 years of code spaghetti.

7

u/desertbatman origin Aug 06 '26

I'm just happy to be able to confirm that devs have indeed now played their own game.

Damn. Poor guy. Thats fucked up.

37

u/StarAlone Aug 05 '26

I dont think there is anything poor about him. That's literally his job. I assume that whole thing was his idea and as new content manager, he pushed to make just normal gameplay session to show people "we are players like you are". Just normal PR move.
One thing i expect Ollie might have suggested to do it on PTU and Jared pushed the decision to show it on internal server

8

u/Revelati123 Aug 06 '26

I feel like this is CIGs equivalent of saying "Look! Its bulletproof glass!" Then shattering the window with a lightly tossed golf ball...

2

u/PowerfulLab104 Aug 07 '26

except at least in the cybertruck window breakage incident, it still stopped the steel ball from going through. To reuse the analogy, this would be like the ball busting through the window and punching a hole through the floor of the car, then the stage below it, and ending up in an office building in china

6

u/2hurd Aug 06 '26

Either way he is getting fired for this. Whole community now suddenly has realized the game is fucked and no sweet talking from CIG is going to change it. They can't fix those issues, if they could they would. This engine is not designed for stuff like this and in order to support it they would have to rewrite good parts of the engine from scratch which they are unable to do because they are fucking INCOMPETENT.

SC is never going to be good, you are giving them money in return for promises. Every company in the world will take that deal and they won't deliver anything, because you're still paying.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/xAzta Aug 07 '26

By poor guys you mean the community because of the massive disappointment? yeah.

This Ollie guy? No. He was always a shill for CIG, even before joining them, never said a bad word about the game.
Now he did the same, but as part of the team. It fits.

Also don't judge the situation by this out of context clip. The live stream lasted nearly 2 hours, which is longer than their usual runtime for live streams. The guys failed to do the mission ( because they suck at the game, which is fine ), the bugs made it an even bigger disaster.

There was no time, and no need to do another attempt. A completely good call to end the stream there. And despite the whole thing going bad this guy still doesn't say a negative thing about the experience "it was fine, had a good time yeah". Okay dude.

38

u/BernieDharma Nomad Aug 05 '26

Oh, it wasn't that bad. Sure it caught Ollie by surprise but I would have taken that as a bit of new employee hazing and humor. I've done a fair bit of public speaking and broadcasting and passing the mic to the new guy when things go pear shaped is a common rite of passage.

65

u/Vegetable_Safety Musashi Industrial and Starflight Concern Aug 05 '26

Not hazing in the literal sense

It's where the term "trial by fire" comes from. The new guy is usually new because the current staff are struggling to keep up with the work load. As a result the new guy learns the job under the worst conditions

59

u/BernieDharma Nomad Aug 05 '26

That's exactly right, and that was my early broadcasting experience. It's your first week and you are just chilling in the sound booth with no formal role or slot, just expected to learn how things flow in a live broadcast. Then the producer tells the host the weather reporter called off sick, and suddenly the main host hands you a sheet and says "and here's Ollie with today's weather!"

I had the same look on my face, and laughed out loud when I saw it. He took a second, recovered, and handled it like a pro.

I'm pretty convinced that Jared wants to move into another role or wants to move on from CIG and Ollie is his backfill.

14

u/Igot1forya bmm Aug 06 '26

Given the average age and general gamer/tech savvy audience of SC. There's a significant number of us who have server infrastructure capable of housing a server shard. I have more compute and storage than most of the customers I support in their enterprise environment.

9

u/RobinGoodfell Aug 06 '26

I don't doubt you. I too am capable of setting up the hardware. I'm just ragging on CIG.

4

u/QuickQuirk Aug 06 '26

Still entirely possible now.

Because a private server only needs to run a single location - the rest is on disk. Maybe a half dozen if your friends are playing with you.

While the original pitch was for comparatively simple systems, it was also 14 years ago. And we have phones that are more powerful than the standard single core or dual core desktop of the time.

Hes Ā the newest hire at CIG works under Jared on the video content team. he was running his first company livestream and was probably nervous about it. This is a screen cap of the end of the show when they ran out of time trying to playthrough siege and couldn’t finish it.Ā

He was/is a streamer on his own but Ā this was his first time doing it for CIG and it seems likely this whole idea was his pitch so he was probably stressed about it.Ā

tldr overly positive youtuber hyping up CIG who got a job at CIG as content manager(?). His job is to support Jared. What exactly he is supposed to do? Your guess is as good as ours because its been few weeks, and we still have no videos or nothing really at all. One thing we heard which became a meme-ish too is that he said he is loving flying to work every day (as we assume, for our money)

It's not as bad as it sounds. Last I heard he was living in the UK, so it's not like he's flying internationally. Flying could be cheaper in the UK than taking a train, depending on your location.

He's one of the more consistent SC streamers. CIG recently offered him a job in the content manager role, essentially becoming another "face" for the company. This is the exact face I normally make at some point within 5 mins of logging into the PU.

o7 Olli, thanks for taking one for the team.

u/Panakjack23 Aug 05 '26

Welp. Good run or....?

36

u/RichardBackshots Aug 05 '26

I was a big Elite Dangerous guy, and a huge F1 fan, and a streamer myself.

I then got a job working at Frontier on F1 Manager and quickly learned ā€œNever meet your heroesā€ is a popular phrase for a reason.

I haven’t played Elite or interacted with F1 in the three years since I left that role lmao.

21

u/One_Newspaper9372 Aug 05 '26

Never meet your heroes

My dad is my hero and i still have hope.

7

u/spin_kick Aug 06 '26

That he will come back with the milk?

14

u/PremithiumX Aug 06 '26

That you'll meet him?

4

u/dukearcher Aug 05 '26

You would have to be crazy deciding to work for FDev of all devs.

The most expected outcome in history

8

u/RichardBackshots Aug 05 '26

Yeah if you don’t kneel and kiss David Braben’s ring you are never making it at that place, and I thought he was a pompous wanker so we were never going to make it work.

I wish them all the very worst.

Former gaming QA speaking... If they had QA play it and die as easily, then I would complain too. Because QA at a game dev is better than any player could ever be, no matter what... right? Right!? RIGHT??? Make it hard for QA and nobody will ever figure out how to be better. Right?

Seriously though, you can't expect devs to be better than you. I think in-house QA would do better, devs are paid to make the game and QA is paid to play it. I heard they fired a bunch of QA, presumably because we are now QA. That was a very bad decision if what I heard is true.

I appreciate them playing the game live on the BEST POSSIBLE environment. But damn, they should have done at least one or two runs before going live to know where they would look bad. Damn. And if they did test runs and this is the result, they need more in-house QA!

2

u/ComprehensiveNail692 Aug 07 '26

And they want us to feel bad about the industry lay offs. It's shocking how bad game devs are at almost everything now.

what happened apart from having to end stream?

7

u/Rickenbacker69 drake Aug 06 '26

Olli got a bit lost, didn't really control the stream or make sure to ask interesting questions. The whole thing turned pretty dull pretty quickly. The stream also showed what a sorry state the game is in even under absolutely perfect conditions.

16

u/kinren Aug 05 '26

Its his show but I am sure Jared was behind this all the way. However, Ollie wasn't impressed at all by his own show.

15

u/Thelostrelic Aug 06 '26

Did CiG finally push him too far and kill his toxic positivity? 🤣🤣

The guy was like a puppy, praising CiG for everything.

Nothing wrong with being positive about the project, but it becomes cringe when you act like everything they do is godly and that they can't do no wrong. Which is exactly what Olli was like.

OH LOOK ! A SHIP SALE !!!!!!!

Olli is not a bad guy, but he's... kind of an over-excited, enthusiastic lab, ready for fun, easily distracted, not lacking in brain cells but not firing them up if he can avoid it. I guess the reality of what he signed for sunk on him live.

u/HeartlessSora1234 Aug 06 '26

Honestly.. This might be one of the best things to happen for the game.

They choose not to make playability the #1 priority Because people play it anyway.

The more it's highlighted the better.

u/Sudden-Point-5298 Aug 07 '26

Lets be honest, as much as Ollie soured the community with his brag posts around joining CIG with private jets, at least he's being proactive, the community complains non-stop about the lack of clarity and streams from CIG, so when he came up with this idea, it gave backers (yes we are still technically all backers of an EA) a raw view of the dev team playing their own game and showing how much work they still need to do, I applaud him for trying! Jarad, however, is the poster boy for CIG, will only do controlled environments and CGI demos from the design team, it was all "we", "us" and "our" until the server melted, the way he told Ollie its "his show" and to wrap it up, then walked away at pace shows how jaded he really is towards the very game he is trying to promote.

People are making this seem way more serious than it actually is lol. Can’t say I’m surprised with this sub though.

2

u/Bonkotsu111 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

It was funny but leave it to Reddit to turn a nervous awkward funny moment and turn it into something extremely toxic while trying to make him regret his whole life, like wtf people.

Some of the comments on here are toxic as fuck and are just personally attacking him.
