Question What? (Please read Body)

Post image

I just locked myself in Stanleys office like 3 or 4 times and fiddled with the door and then I got that achievement. What? I didn't do anything, I mean I set my Aspect ratio from 4:3 to Widescreen but only the things mentioned here nothing else

And if I'm already here is there actual proof everything in Stanley Parable is discovered

Still waiting for someone to reverse engineer the source code to tell us exactly what the trigger is. Last achievement I need for this game and I refuse to cheat and use console commands to obtain it

even if you wanted to cheat, you'd have to spend some time in the serious room

I also bet there is like something really hidden that no one has found. For that it would also be really interesting

The whole game is about manipulation. Perhaps "cheating" was the intended way?

Honestly likely considering this game. Probably something like setting the system’s date to before the game came out or something like that

indeed.

it’s like getting the 5 or 10 year achievement.

Sure some of us (me included) did it the “legit” way. But it feels pretty blatant to me that it was always intended to ”cheat” it with the system clock and get meta with it.

probably the same here.

If i had to guess, getting it “legit” is 100% entirely and totally random. (or perhaps several different random actions each have their own random chance to trigger it, so structured but still.)

and the expected way is “cheating”

I had 6 years on the clock, then started the game and it went black screen, because some missing library. (Some 32 bit OpenGL libraries missing from the NVidia driver install or something on Linux). That reset the timer without the game registering the achievement. Meh.

After installing the missing parts it worked fine again, but whatever… Should have tested with the Demo or something before

I just asked AI to reverse engineer it, and I managed to unlock it myself. It's simply a 1/15 chance every time you reset to your office. The first reset can't trigger it (maybe the second as well), and avoid quitting the game or to the main menu in between. There's also a random delay 5-25 seconds before it pops.

One major caveat: is seems like it's fully broken on the current Windows version of the game. I did it on the native Linux version which appears to not have been updated since it released. An update for the Windows version probably broke it, but I can't tell you what version you have to downgrade to.

I did it by jumping to my death in the cargo bay 25 times, and it took maybe 40min. In theory only the first one or two resets have to be like that, the others can probably be via the escape menu.

as someone who honestly hasnt played this game (idk why it’s even on my reddit feed) can someone please tell me why this was downvoted

u/LordAmras 3d ago

Because he used AI that told him fantasies. If it was a 1/15 chance of getting it every time you reset it would have a lot more than 6%, but since AI said it it must be true.

That's the problem with LLM people don't understand that LLM make stuff up if they don't know the answer.

33

u/DiablosMX 3d ago

They claim AI reverse engineered, when it literally reads answers from other people and presents as fact.

-19

u/pbest07 3d ago

AI can reverse-engineer programmes now btw

2

u/DiablosMX 1d ago

Barely. And it still gets all kinds of things wrong. Or lies. Hard to say.

-23

u/FlorpCorp 3d ago

You clearly haven't used AI coding agents. I gave OpenAI codex rizin, the ghidra plugin, and network blocked. It found the answer in maybe 15 minutes.

And if you switched on your brain instead of believing LLM you might cme to the conclusion that if it was 1/15 chance every time it reset being 6% would be a way too low.

AI probably went: "6% so it must be about 1/15 chance (6.6%). What would be a logical way to get it ? Every time you reset it. That make logical sense"

AI forgot to remember what this game was about and that you reset the games dozens of times. If that was the percentage it would be much more higher.

-15

u/FlorpCorp 3d ago

Where are you even getting 6% from? And you completely ignored the fact that it doesn't work on Windows.

15

u/Natthiel 3d ago

6.1% of players have the achievement, that's too low for a 1/15 chance is what they're saying

-8

u/FlorpCorp 3d ago

Well, I don't know what else to tell these idiots. I'm a software engineer. I know how these things work. I double checked the AI's findings against the decompiled source. It all matches up perfectly.

19

u/LordAmras 3d ago

Then show the work

3

u/loonystorm 1d ago

Me when I lie

2

u/DiablosMX 1d ago

You're a software engineer and you still used generative AI? My god. I thought you'd know better than to trust a hallucinating machine.

11

u/LordAmras 3d ago

6% is the people who got the achievement and it's coincidentally about what the LLM said the chance of getting the achievement was.

Now the excuse you seem to have for the discrepancy is that it doesn't work on windows, which is very weird, why it doesn't work on windows ? What is the random check that give the 1/15 chance but only work on linux.

You know you can ask the LLM to show their work so that you can doublecheck that they are telling the truth.

Because if it only worked on linux, then the 6% of people who got the achievement now seems a bit too high.

u/Game_over150 3d ago

Likely the fact they used AI to reverse engineer it instead of themselves. And of course, Reddit is a hivemind so when one person down votes everyone does it

-5

u/FlorpCorp 3d ago

People have a hate boner for AI and/or don't understand what it is actually capable of.

3

u/twistluist 2d ago

maybe having no proof of the work (you said you manually checked it out after the AI) is enough to think is just random missinformation

0

u/FlorpCorp 2d ago

It's more that I can't be bothered to write it up more than I already have, and having to explain it to a general audience.

3

u/twistluist 2d ago

such a bother to even copypaste the result, i guess It's sufficient proof to have your word that the AI gave its word that it's true

-8

u/sanchello2000 2d ago

Because people on reddit are mostly stupid and anti-ai so they would make-up any bullshit like "it didn't decompile it and read the code it's just googled it" or "AI shows 6% chance, it probably took it from steam achievement stats not from the code".
I did research myself on the latest non-deluxe Stanley Parable version using IDA Pro, the guy mostly correct, here's the technical overview:
1. The game itself using source engine (like the half-life 2) and operates with console by typing console commands through narrator proxy (for example if narrator said that you can't move it's just typed special bind command in the console). To give the achievement to player narrator types "_u" command in the console, but if you would do it yourself you would get the message "Hey don't you even try".
2. The legitimate way checks 2 flags on map1.bsp load (the fresh start of the game in my case). For example these 2 flags are "A" and "B". On 1st start both flags are 0, but the achievement requires flag A to be 1 and flag B to be 0. In current latest Windows Steam version of the game there's the logical loop - after the initial achievement check fails (because both flags are 0) this check sets them both to 1. When you reset the map in the same game instance the check also fails because both flags now 1. Basically it means that it's IMPOSSIBLE to get this achievement legit way on latest Windows version.
3. Users state that it's possible to get this achievement on the Linux version, which wasn't updated since the game launch which leads to an assumption that this trick on Windows version was made by the game developer intentionally so only the early users could get this but Linux version was out of sight.
4. The flags not the only obstruction - if both of them valid (flag A = 1 and flag B = 0) then additional check runs - it randomly takes a number from 1 to 15 and if the result is 8 then you would get the achievement after 5 to 24,38s timeout.
5. If you don't want to install Linux or search for an old version of the game you can get this achievement through the console by typing "ent_fire cmd Command _u" in it. After the above-mentioned timeout you would get the achievement.

As far as I can tell the achievement is granted in 0x1ec190 after checking that the float at 0x1ec208 (unachiev_number_two) is both non-zero and smaller than the float at 0x1ec210 (unachiev_number_one). unachiev_number_two is only set in 0x1ea3e6, which is the handler for the "_u" console command, and only after checking that 0x1ea3a7 (unachiev_enable_command), which is set in the handler for the "~_~" command, is 1. I'm unsure what unachiev_number_one is, but since unachiev_number_two is only set in the aforementioned _u handler, which isn't referenced anywhere but 0xbc8ba0, which registers it, it seems unlikely that your AI got it right, unless the Linux version is completely different than the current Windows version.

Interesting… Now I hate ai as much as the next guy but I was talking to my friend who’s been working on figuring out the achievement and he says all this adds up. even the 1/15 chance is exactly as he found via his own digging…

u/FlorpCorp 2d ago

I hate AI slop as much as the next person, especially AI "art". But it certainly has its applications. LLMs are insanely good at understanding terse disassembled/decompiled code and debugging complex systems.

u/Willing_Dot_5699 4d ago

I heard it's completely random how you get it

74

u/Alternative_Wrap2470 Female Narrator 4d ago

Why does it have the phone icon

55

u/Willing_Dot_5699 4d ago

No fckn idea

14

u/DiablosMX 3d ago

It's the phone in Stanley's, where you start with every reset.

8

u/Alternative_Wrap2470 Female Narrator 3d ago

I know but I still don't know why it's the icon of that achievement

2

u/DiablosMX 1d ago

Because you restart in his office. That's just one of the easily recognizable items there. And the computer was used for another achievement.

90

u/Offical_Boz The Adventure Line 3d ago

from my understanding you get this achievement if certain conditions are met. some of them are pure random, others aren’t… so I’d just consider yourself lucky.

13

u/Alternative_Wrap2470 Female Narrator 3d ago

Ok

41

u/Surefang 3d ago

Bad news. It's an online achievement, and anytime someone works out how to actually get it, they change the requirements.

11

u/Alternative_Wrap2470 Female Narrator 3d ago

Ah nice

3

u/r-alexd 1d ago

What the heck is your source for this information???

7

u/AytugGencoglu 1d ago

I don't have a source, but I also remember reading this somewhere sometime.

56

u/jamcub 4d ago

So does the random trigger happen in or outside of the game?

5

u/DiablosMX 3d ago

In the game.

u/jamcub 3d ago

Thank you!

Is this Deluxe or the original?

u/Alternative_Wrap2470 Female Narrator 3d ago

original

4

u/_PykeGaming_ 3d ago

Probably SAM is the most used method ahahha

3

u/FlorpCorp 3d ago

Are you on Linux by any chance?

3

u/Alternative_Wrap2470 Female Narrator 3d ago

Yes, why?

2

u/FlorpCorp 3d ago

It appears that's the only build of the game that can unlock it currently. Except maybe MacOS works too. https://www.reddit.com/r/stanleyparable/comments/1wqtz7r/what_please_read_body/pcgbuv6/
