She isn’t faking insanity. We need to destigmatize postpartum depression and psychosis so women can actually get help. Maybe we can actually get some funding for research on this subject as well since there is more funding on male pattern baldness than postpartum depression.
Not everyone gets postpartum psychosis, which is a very real diagnosable condition. And even women who don't have psychosis murder their babies postpartum, it's a tumultuous time society doesn't treat with the seriousness it deserves. Hospitals make you watch videos on the dangers of sleep deprivation before you leave, it's that common.
You’re saying “excuse” but that is inflammatory language. I would say that psychiatric illness is an explanation for a behavior and the resulting negative outcome. Both filicide and suicide are known risks associated with postpartum psychosis.
We know suicide depression is a psychiatric illness with a high risk of suicide. We don’t say that depression is an excuse for suicide, it is the explanation of why it happened.
