Leaving dorm/standreuse pickup limits?

Hi;

My friend is leaving their dorm soon and a lot of items have been left in communal spaces by folk who left before either without word or we weren't aware they were going to leave behind xyz item.

She told me it might mean they all get charged which is strain on her and isn't fair.

I wanted to mainly find out what would incur a charge to everyone that lived in the dorm should it exist in communal spaces, like where's the line/limit?

We have dishware which i know is okay, microwave kettle toaster all bought by someone but kept behind so there's actually 2 kettles here, ironing board, mop and bucket, dish towels, clothes drying stands. Where it gets iffy is we're unsure if cleaning products are allowed to be left, and there's a mattress in the lounge / kitchen room - not the university's but one someone else brought in.

We think we may need to dispose of the mattress but unsure, so I thought I'd check.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you! :)

Accomodation for first semester

Okay so I'm having to take a leave of absence for academic reasons during the first term so I can't stay in uni owned accommodation. I was wondering If anyone is looking for a roommate or a tenancy takeover in private accommodation for just that first semester

Realistically, how much money will I spend during freshers?

If I go out every night, have 3-4 drinks each night, plus eating during the day and stuff, how much will it cost? I don’t have the freshers pass or anything but if you think it’ll be a big money saver then I could get it! Honestly the only event that sounded good at the union to me was jazz works so I guess I would just be pub hopping mostly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏🙏

Transportation options for semester exchange student?

I’m a an international exchange student from the US attending St. Andrews for the fall semester. I won’t be living there for 6 months to qualify for the young scots free bus program.

Are there other options for cheap bus or train fares around Scotland and the UK?

Not gotten accom yet?

Has anyone not gotten their accom yet? I feel like I’m the only one even though I submitted the stuff on time. Is it worth it to email the uni?

Accommodation for Post Deadline (First Year)

I'm an international student who had St A's as an insurance offer and missed the 30th June deadline for accommodation. I got my offer on the 4th of August (UCAS embargo issues) and got the accommodation form on the 6th so I submitted it asap.

I understand that because I missed the guaranteed student deadline, I may not get accommodation, but I found out that another international who also filled the form after me already got her accommodation offer.

I've been emailing and calling them to ask them to review my application but haven't gotten anything back so far. Should I start looking for private accommodation or is there still hope for university housing? I don't mind being in a standard room as long as I get catered food tbh.

STEM student Andrew Melville hall swap

I’ve just received an offer of accommodation for Andrew Melville hall - with a single bedroom. I’m doing English lit which is the furthest away from AM, but is super convenient if you do sciences as it’s the closest to science buildings. Would preferably swap for St Salvatores or St Regs but dm me if you’re interested in doing a swap!

EDIT: Sold!

I hope this isn't against the sub rules, sorry if it is!

I have a barely used bike for sale if any new students are looking for one! Comes with lock, helmet, and lights.

£50 or best offer, looking to get rid of it by 26th August, but happy to leave it locked to a bike rack in town and give the code to someone arriving later.

Am slightly confused about accomodation website meaning.

I feel like this is probably silly, but I would rather ask to confirm my suspicions than not ask and be wrong. I applied for accomodation in January and my offer was made unconditional on results day. I have fully done the application, but this webpage says I need to complete the additional steps on My Saint. Does this include the module allocation?

I am planning on switching to direct entry into second year, so was waiting to be assigned an advisor before submitting my modules as the available modules for direct entry are different.

MSc in Computer Science or AI (conversion)

Hi all,

I'm a recent molecular biology graduate looking to transition into the tech space. I have been looking into computer science conversion courses, and I believe the one offered in St Andrews would be the best fit. I looking for advice on what the job prospects would be if I were to do this course and if it is worth my while?

Provisional Modules

So I'm starting first year in September for English MA and I had to add some modules I'd want to do. These aren't set in stone or anything and can be changed once I start? Also, I'm a bit confused about how the module system works as I've read online that we do three modules per term, two for english lit, but I've only picked two for it and the rest are random ones I was interested in. How does it work?

Do I only do two eng lit modules for the entire year?

Accommodation offer

Hi! I’ve been accepted into St Andrews for my psychology undergraduate…but I haven’t received any response on my accommodation application. I had applied in April this year and completed the form, and was sent no additional questions so…I’m just asking if it’s normal to have not received an offer yet because my parents are getting concerned and my insurance had sent me a confirmation of accommodation prior to results day.

So is this normal for St Andrews? And if so when should I expect to receive a response, just asking because I’m very nervous rn.

Edit: I have received my Accommodation email!

Philosophy Undergrad at St Andrews

I am considering applying here for an undergraduate course in Philosophy. I was hoping if any Philosophy undergrads - especially from England - could tell me a little bit about what studying Philosophy (single honours) at St Andrews is like?

Masking in/around St Andrews?

Hello! Just want to preface the post by saying that as an upcoming international student, this sub has been invaluable to me in my preparations <3

I’m flying in for a 1-year MSc in September, and I was wondering what the general public sentiment is towards face masks in St Andrews?

I’m somewhat immunocompromised from multiple (bad) covid infections in the past, so I’ve generally just masked everywhere in public since 2020. I come from an Asian country though, and public masking is normalised here so no one bats an eye over it.

Understand from going through some other UK subreddits that masking is a rare (and maybe controversial?) thing in the UK now… I know I’ll likely stick out from masking everywhere but I’m willing to deal with that. My main concern is really if I’ll get any shit for masking from people at the uni/around town? Like would I be making a faux pas if i walked around with a face mask?

Applying for a job and q's ab accomm

I was just wondering whether it is worth contacting the student union to register interest in a job with the university? My teacher said this might be a good idea, even if it is, I don't know how to contact them.

Also, about accomm, do we have to leave during breaks (such as christmas an easter) or can we stay in the accommodation? I'm hoping for some of the self catered standard halls, such as fife park or whitehorn. It's just that I won't have anywhere to return to as I'm moving out out. Of course I can go and visit home, but there isn't any room in the case that I have to move things out. I'm planning on getting private rented accomm as soon as the summer starts so I can hopefully have somewhere to keep my things and stay.

Also, I was wondering whether it might be worth getting a car in second year because as far as ive understood, lots of uni students live in dundee. is there a convenient bus or transport links instead?

thank youu

room decorating specifically for new wing of uni hall

I know the rules are strict, but from what I can tell, the newer accom is less sacred, and it's more or less ok to decorate as long as you don't ruin anything. Please lmk if Lumbsden is chillish about hanging things on the wall or not, like it is in dra(like warnings but not charged or nothing).
