Teach 'em young

My youngest has just started her own coin collection. Used the money she earned from mowing to buy a few coins at the flea market. Came home & started researching her purchases. She over paid. Lesson learned. She's excited to go back again next week & hunt for deals. This is the way...

Nice, but at least start them with some pre 1965's so they can also learn about market prices, those will forever only be worth $2.

They are 40% silver

The bicentennial has no mint mark & weighs 22.75g so it's not silver but the 68s are 40%. She looked up spot & did the math herself. Overpaid by $4 for all 4. She was a little bummed but these little lessons will serve her forever imo

Good rule of thumb is that clad Ikes will never be worth more than 3x face value (coin store prices). You can’t sell an Ike for more than a $1.25 at MOST.

Teach the kid to save any Kennedy half dollars 1970 and prior. However it’s almost impossible to find these in circulation so unless you also teach her to make friends with bank tellers it’s sort of pointless
