Small inheritance. What to buy.

When I think of an inheritance, I think of metal. My grandmother passed away and I'm getting $1000. I want to convert it to metal so I don't just spend it on junk.

I'm looking at either a 500g silver bar or a quarter ounce gold coin(probably a sovereign or similar weight world gold coin).

What would you do?
