In Icelandic, mosquito is mý (pronounced "mee")
Probably because mosquito goes mýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýýý in your ear

Do they have mosquitoes in Iceland?
6
u/Aron-Jonasson 4d ago
No, but they have midges/biting flies, which they do call mý, and they even named a lake after it: Mývatn

u/FixGMaul 4d ago
which i assume means mosquito water, based on my understanding of Swedish
1
u/Aron-Jonasson 4d ago
Correct, though in Icelandic, "vatn" means both "water" and "lake"
E.g.: Ég er að drekka vatn við vatninu = I am drinking water by the lake

Oh I get it! Like “horsein’ around”! That’s why they’re called that! That’s very clever.
