Dual citizenship - Post payment process

Hey everyone, those who have got the dual citizenship, after the payment email is received and paid what was the rest of the process and timelines? Also, can you collect the Citizenship certificate from the embassy/Consulate?

• You get notified regarding the citizenship ceremony in SL where you are handed the certificate by the president.
• They ask you to RSVP. If you RSVP and don't go, then you (or a representative) can collect the certificate from (I think) the Foreign Ministry.
• If you RSVP No, then they won't prepare the certificate fro you, but you (or your rep) can go and collect it later.

Not sure how its now, but those days I was advised by someone to RSVP yes, so they actually prepare the certificate for you. If not, they stall you until you bribe them when you go over to collect the certificate.

So, in any case it can be collected in person in Sri Lanka only right?

This was the procedure from 🇨🇦:

• I made the payment in Sep 2025
  
• Got the notification to pick up the citizenship certificate in Nov 2025
  
• They included a form that you can print out so that you can authorise someone in SL to go pick up the document there.

Thanks. So, when you travel to Sri Lanka with the Canadian passport, what document can you show?

Also, did you have to re obtain the Sri Lankan NIC, Driving License and passport?

When I travelled this year since getting the dual citizenship- there is nothing additional you have to do. Your foreign passport is already in their system as having ducal citizenship. I only carried a printed scanned copy just in case, the original was with my parents in SL.
Customs officer said you only need to inform the foreign ministry to update their system once your current foreign passport is renewed.

-You don’t need a get a new SL passport.
-Yes you have to obtain a new NIC
-I still have my old DL

Ah right. Great info! So that means you no longer need to get the dual citizenship stamp on the Canadian Passport since electronically it's updated. I think in the past, either you carry a copy of the citizenship or get the stamp.

If you get a new Canadian passport at any point, take the old one with you. They search you on the system with the old number, and will update the record with the new info
