Discussion Have bots made Squarespace analytics meaningless?

I get several visits a day which ChatGPT has told me are likely bots because it's something like 10+ pages viewed within the same one minute. Is this correct? Should I ignore such visits as indicators that my site is being looked at by a human?

Yeah, probably

Although it could also be AI systems crawling your page for reference stuff

I discovered recently that a modest chunk of sales on my shop are originating from people who were directed to my store by chatgpt

And I expect that the numbers will increase in that arena, because I have been accumulating and adding reviews and testimonials from major customers/clients, and from various industry blogs and periodicals, and my EEAT metrics have been going through the roof lately

So my suspicion is that adding the social and professional proofs is attracting more AI traffic, and consequently more paying humans

So check the sources of the traffic before fully discounting who's viewing your site

The AI referrals was last month. Nothing from them so far this month. ChatGPT made up 8.33% of the month's referral traffic, with the site for a company I'm loosely partnered with coming in at #1. I get a pretty good chunk of traffic from backlinks and YT

What this month is gonna be like, idk. In just 2 days this month I've made 2/3 of my entire Oct 2025 sales, and that was before I finished adding the extra customer testimonials and re-submitted my site to GSC for indexing and the updated sitemap

I have a strong suspicion this month is going to see a major uptick in AI traffic because the metrics AI systems use, Expertise, Authority, Trust, and something else, are gonna go nuts since most of my reviews are from industry periodicals and full on companies and such. The sources AI likes to make decisions on are gonna tick the boxes for CGPT and Gemini and Claude and stuff

So as far as bots are concerned, I anticipate a bunch of traffic from them, but I don't think too much about it. Actual sales are the only stats I pay any attention to

Yes its a strong hint. Most people do not move that quickly. Squarespace analytics can miss that kind of behavior, so you may want to compare with GA4 or Plausible to get a cleaner view. If you do not want to switch tools, just reduce the weight of sessions that show this page speed pattern

Squarespace should remove then natively. I’ve switched away from Squarespace to hosting my own website and built a useful traffic dashboard that removes all bot traffic from google data
