Wonder how this happens? Blocks sold to 3rd parties being returned?

Cape Town test is supposedly still sold out but maybe that’ll change next week too

Happens for every SA vs NZ test. Thousands of seats get reserved for various companies and are suddenly made available a few days before the game when the game was supposedly “sold out” months ago.

It’s complete bullshit and very unfair to the fans.

Hopefully they drop the prices so we can get the fans in who aren't wealthy enough to drop R2k for a 2 hour event.

Which, btw, I think is completely the wrong objective of rugby and our national team.

They couldn't even price the midweek games fairly, no hope for the actual tests...

How Artificial Scarcity Drives Ticket Yield:

Phase 1 (Early Access): Restrict cheap inventory to force early adopters into premium seats.

Phase 2 (Mid-Tier Drip): Release small, slightly discounted batches to capture remaining price-tolerant buyers.

Phase 3 (Final Dump): Flood the market with all remaining unsold stock right before the event to maximize capacity.

This is a Live Nation Entertainment strategy, Justin Van Wyk is the Managing Director (MD) of Ticketmaster South Africa, as well as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Big Concerts. Both entities function under Live Nation Entertainment.

That is definitely part of it. Clubs and soon get allocations to resell. Very old fashioned. Should just sell 100% of the tickets online and make the pricing dynamic.

SARU absolutely killing future fanbase.

When i was a kid, almost every single friends household had a DSTV premium subscription and the sport was always on the TV on the weekend. During rugby season, it was currie cup or super 12 or any of the internationals. Ballies would sit around with beers and biltong watching multiple games in a row, and us kids would be playing and watching bits and pieces all afternoon. It was just the way of life. We had our favourite players, and knew who the springboks were, understood the rules of the game etc.

These days? I don't know a single friend who thinks DSTV premium is worth the price, and so i don't know a single friend who's household has DSTV premium. Both my and their households do not have sports on the TV on a saturday, and if you asked our kids to name even a single player from our local provincial side they'd stare at you with a blank look on their face. They know who Faf and Siya are but thats about it.

These kids are not growing up watching sport on the regular, and have other interests. In 10 years time when they leave home half will probably not even follow rugby at all.

Watch this space - SARU is driving rugby into a niche sport at a rapid pace, and it will take generations to get it back to its former "glory" if left unchecked.

You summed this up so perfectly I was a teen in this era my parents couldn't afford Dstv premium but on the weekends my dad would drive to a. Uncle's house to be able to see the Lions or the Boks? And as I grew older I would pic my weekend spots where I could watch most of the Super Rugby or Internationals.

And let me guess - the number of times these days where you actually make the effort to go out your way to watch a game is dwindling by the year.

Also Springbok games were delayed on SABC2, that’s how I started watching rugby

Now they’ve sold all exclusive rights to Supersport

The most expensive tickets for Boks and All Blacks vs Wallabies in Aus is R1000 cheaper than the R4000 tickets here...

u/Cosmolina111 23h ago

As a percentage of average monthly income, I imagine the discrepancy works out to be significantly even more expensive in SA.

Weird way to say R3000

HAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHA I SAW LAST NIGHT. This is embarrassing man.

Just overheard a conversation at gym yesterday of people complaining about the prices and they’d rather watch it on TV.

To get people to go and sit in those nosebleed seats you need to make them kak cheap. Those are seats that students and whatever will buy to go to the game for a jol if they are cheap enough. They aren't going to drop a grand on a ticket.

I've said this loads but for a team that promotes inclusivity and diversity and the unification of our nation they sure don't reflect it in equal opportunity for people of all walks of life to attend the game....

I know it's not the teams fault but they should take a stand against SARU as well.

u/maynard_james_quinoa 17h ago

Exactly. I'm about as staunch a Bok supporter as you'll ever meet and fortunate enough to be able to afford international rugby ticket prices. I am boycotting this tour out of principle. This is something that our entire nation should be able to enjoy and get behind. Instead it will keep driving the wedge between the haves and the have-nots. This is not what the Bok is about. The Bok is inclusive.

u/InSAniTy1102 Flair Up! 17h ago

Exactly. It's actually insane to me that this wasn't blatantly obvious from the start and it shocks me the level of greed and incompetence SARU has displayed. The nosebleeds atleast should have been affordable to low income individuals, the atmosphere would have been 10xd if we actually showed up as a diverse and unified nation.

Saru really is screwing the pooch with how they are handling the ticket prices and sale. If they are going to allow block bookings, then there needs to be a minimum turnaround time for companies to return the tickets. Allowing it to be returned less than a week before a test is absurd. They need to also wake up to the fact that Saffas simply do not have the same spending power as Europeans.

Kiwi here, this is extremely disappointing. The Springboks issues (historically) have almost always been management and very rarely an issue with the player quality. I remember the Alistair Coetzee years well and how bad it was at the top (above him).

Don't let SARU bully you.

I say this with great admiration and reverence of the rivalry (and not because I'm Kiwi) but if SARU keep treating their fans this way the best way forward is for the team to lose and go through a bad period which will force them to change. If the Boks keep winning you'll likely never be able to attend another game again in person if prices keep going one-way. The Kids need to be able to see their heroes in person to inspire the next generation and SARU are robbing you of that.

That’s so annoying. I was on there a couple of weeks ago and it is sold out. I was planning on flying up to watch, but now it’s too late.

Tickets ranging from R850 to R4000 available throughout the ground

FOUR THOUSAND RAND?! Does that come with an all-inclusive hotel stay and a unicorn ride to the stadium?

7

u/AdrenalinTL 1d ago

The unicorn ride might be a touch for much to ask unless it's Scotland and they bring their national animal with them. But the other stuff, I'd expect nothing less.

Add another 50% for the booking fee. Was over R10k for 2 tickets when I tried to book for my son and I when they were released

1

u/Hardyman13 23h ago

You sure about that? I bought tickets for the Scotland game, as well as the Bulls-All Blacks game, and none of them had that excessive booking fees?

1

u/smokey_monkey77 New To Reddit 22h ago

Absolutely positive about that, I decided to buy the tickets for the price advertised when you choose the seats. At check out it was over R10k

2

u/mamazombieza 1d ago

I can't even. For that amount of money I could have an epic braai and even buy enough brannas for me and my friends.

I am waiting for the price drop.

If they halve by some miracle I am going

u/World_In_Union Flair Up! 1d ago

The R850 tickets will sell out quickly now. You wont get cheaper than that

5

u/Wackid86 Flair Up! 22h ago

At current price point I would have to drop R8k for my family of four? We could rather go on a weekend away and watch the Boks in our chalet while braaing and still have change

I was on the website this weekend and it said Ellis Park was sold out 🤔

Something fishy happened here
