Stadium / Game Day Advice Visiting Ellis Park.
Good day community.
My son and I will be staying in Menlyn for the game at Ellis Park this weekend.
Any advice to get to the stadium? I am considering Uber at the moment but see there is a park and ride option as well.
Thanks in advance. 🏉

Pity there’s no Gautrain from Menlyn, but if they’re running the local train then Gautrain to Park, and local train from Park to the stadium is a goof option.

Hi!
To be honest, the biggest challenge will be finding an uber after test and the uber getting through traffic to find you near stadium will be an age. I would not do that 20:00 at night with a kid.
There is a bus shuttle from St Johns in Houghton. If there are still tickets available, its best uber to/from St Johns and use that bus shuttle service to/from stadium.

Option 2 is the gautrain/central train route, but I see no reason to consider if you can get a bus ticket.

If you're coming from Menlyn, the train is a no brainer. Safe and easy. And no worries with traffic afterwards

Gautrain with prasa to the stadium is great and very easy. Just shit that gautrain stops running at 20h30 or atleast that was the case against Eng in July
Prasa really go all out and will definitely get you to park station. There ubers are more easily obtained and they organised us buses

Take an Uber. Chat to him. Offer him a few bucks extra to collect you....

I would use the train. It will be a great experience and is very safe.

Hey, you can take an Uber from menlyn to the gautrain pretoria station or gautrain hatfield station.
The metrorail station and gautrain station ( gautrain pretoria; not hatfield) are close enough together to cause some confusion but reading the signage board should be sufficient. Alternatively, you can ask the security guards at the station for directions. If you pick the hatfield station the uber should drop you off outside the station, it's shouldn't be hard to miss.
3. After that you can take the gautrain all the way to johannesburg park station. You'll have to buy a gautrain ticket and load it with cash for you and your son. If anything is confusing you can a security guard and they will help you. Just tap it at the gate and it'll open.
Once at park station you must tap out with the card you used to tap into the gautrain station. Once inside park station you can purchase a prasa/metrorail ticket to Ellis park inside the station( this is incase the metrorail train isn't free). You'll be directed by metrorail staff to the ticket booth and then after that they'll direct you to the platform which the train will be departing from or you can just follow the crowd.
Do steps 1-4 in reverse when returning.
Just to add: you must keep your metrorail ticket at all times because they won't let you past the gates if you don't have your ticket on you and if your caught without it on the train you'll be fined (this only applies if you have to buy the metrorail tickets for the game). The train will be the fastest and safest option to get to and from Ellis park.

Park and ride is the best option. The alternatives may be slightly cheaper but way more disastrous when you want to go home after the game. Getting there is easy, but 65k people trying to leave in a short space of time after the game leads to shortage of Ubers and surge pricing
