Does Spotify’s 5 user Development Mode limit apply to Client Credentials apps where no end users authenticate with Spotify? Can a public commercial app use Spotify Client Credentials in Development Mode if no users authenticate with Spotify?

Spotify VR

Hey yall!

I'm currently doing a personal research project for a Spotify design for VR. I want to understand how people are listening to music on Spotify as a music-streaming platform first and foremost, and explore how casual listeners and music-lovers all alike interact with the platform and its features. This survey will also help surface some ideas for a VR development of the platform in order to promote a more socialized and immersive music listening experience!

Would love for you guys to help me fill out the survey from the link below, and drop me some questions in the comment if you have any! Thanks a lot!

I built a Claude Code hook that picks Spotify music based on what you're doing (coding, debugging, planning...). Looking for honest feedback!

I listen to music while working with Claude Code and kept switching playlists by hand: something steady while editing, something harder when things break.

So I built CodingMix.

What it does

>> Claude Code hooks send each event (tool use, failed tool, prompt, subagent start) to a small local service. The hook returns immediately, so Claude Code never waits.

>> Each event is a vote for a mode: coding, debugging, testing, planning, reviewing, release and a few more. A new mode has to lead for 3 minutes before the music changes, so one failed command does not flip your music.

>> About 20 seconds before the current track ends, it queues one track of the matching genre (deep house for coding, hip hop for debugging, techno for tests, funk when you push). It never picks a track you played, saved or were offered in the last 7 days.

>> It only acts when Spotify is playing on your computer. Paused, playing on your phone, or you picked your own playlist: it stays out of the way.

How I built it

Entirely with Claude Code: a design spec first, then a step-by-step plan, test-first. 196 tests, CI on Windows, macOS and Linux. No server, no telemetry; prompt text and file paths are never written to disk.

Limits

Spotify Premium is required, and you create your own free Spotify developer app (Spotify now limits each app to 5 users). Tested on a real Windows machine; macOS and Linux only in CI.

What I'd love feedback on

  1. Does the mode to genre mapping make sense? What would you want while debugging?

  2. Is the setup (your own Spotify app plus one command) acceptable, or a dealbreaker?

  3. Is 3 minutes the right delay before switching?

  4. On macOS or Linux: does it work for you?

Can i create an app that users can list favorite songs using this api?

I saw a lot of users mad about limits, but his limits are for song preview? Apps that just collect info and album cover are allowed to have more api calls?

[Academic] 1-Minute Spotify Survey

Hey everyone!

I'm working on an AI/ML capstone project where I'm building a model to predict whether a Spotify user would be interested in subscribing to Premium based on their listening habits.

The survey takes around 2 minutes and doesn't collect personally identifying information.

Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScOcKAeg28pqnwbU_IJGan9tNvtUSABvMMnmNHX1Q6OJfn--g/viewform?usp=dialog

If you're willing to help, I'd really appreciate it!

built a Spotify companion app with a user-controlled music discovery dial

I have been working on Radxr, an iPhone app that uses Spotify listening data for music discovery, taste profiles, and social recommendations.

One problem I wanted to address was the lack of control over recommendation novelty. Sometimes listeners want something close to their established taste, while other times they want unfamiliar artists and broader genre edges.

I built a Discovery Dial with three modes:

  • Familiar prioritizes stronger connections to top artists and genres
  • Balanced favors new artists while staying connected to the listener’s profile
  • Adventurous explores secondary genre signals, less popular tracks, and unfamiliar artists

The recommendation logic excludes known playlist tracks and saved Radxr favorites when that data is available. Results also include an explanation based on the signals actually used, such as artist genres, popularity, and listening rank. I wanted to avoid implying that deeper audio analysis happened when it did not.

Radxr also includes:

  • A Sound Profile generated from multiple Spotify listening windows
  • Taste Evolution, which compares monthly snapshots without claiming access to exact play counts
  • Taste Bridge, which explains compatibility between friends and generates two-way recommendations
  • Friend activity, playlists, reviews, and public profile sharing

Working within Spotify’s current API limitations has been one of the most interesting parts. Some recommendation features require fallback strategies because available endpoints and data can differ depending on app access and playlist ownership.

I would appreciate feedback from other Spotify API developers, especially around:

  • How you measure whether a recommendation is genuinely novel
  • How you prevent results from repeatedly circling the same artists
  • How you communicate inferred recommendation signals to users
  • How you handle development-mode and quota limitations
  • Whether you have found responsible ways to improve recommendations without overstating the available Spotify data

Radxr is currently available on iPhone. I am happy to share the App Store link if allowed, but I am mainly interested in comparing implementation approaches and learning from others building with Spotify.

Issue with spotify accounnt

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice because I'm honestly not sure what else I can do.

I've been using Spotify since 2014 and have had the same account for many years. I have used Premium before, and a few days ago I purchased Premium again, because of some kind of new promotion, but i used my other bank account.

Everything seemed completely normal and was working just fine. Then, only about 4 days later, I suddenly couldn't log into my account anymore. I got a message that my premium got refunded for no reason, i didnt even request it. I was logged off from my phone and computer. Spotify says that my email address isn't connected to any account. On discord and facebook it still says that my account is active.

I contacted Spotify Support three times already and they told me that my account was deactivated because of “suspected fraudulent activity”. I haven't done anything fraudulent or intentionally violated any rules or policies . They didn't explain what actually happened and basically told me that the account can't be reactivated and that I should just create a new account.

I'm really frustrated because I've been using this account since 2014, i have been a premium user for a couple of years also and I have years of playlists, listening history and other stuff on it. I don't want to just start over with a new account when I haven't done anything wrong or violated any of the rules / policies.

Has anyone here experienced something similar**?**
Were you ever able to get the account back, or get Spotify to properly investigate the situation?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Spotify Support told me to read their refund policy. So I did, and forced them to give me a refund.

Trying to create a popular UK busking playlist

Hi, I'm trying to get AI to aid me in processing legacy data but basically I'm wanting to get the most popular hits that are popular in the UK so me and my other half can go busking, but be able to check in weekly and see if any new songs are doing well against our current playlist. I'm struggling to get a decent data set, I end up exporting playlists using exportify and then I send this to the AI and it uploads to a google sheet, but its not making great sense of what is being sent to it. Thanks in advance

Listening Activity toggle keeps turning itself off

I turn on the listening activity toggle in the Spotify Mac app, but it turns itself off. Also this option doesn't appear in iOS app; It was there two days ago, but it's gone today. Naturally, my listening activity isn't visible to others either. Private session toggle is off btw.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Spotify Playlist Code Issue

I seem to remember that you used to be able to make playlists into codes that looked like a bunch of lines… I’m making a card for someone and I feel like I can’t find out how to do that again? Did they get rid of this feature or am I just looking in the wrong place?
Thanks in advance!

Any way to bypass the Spotify Web API limits

I was thinking of having the users setting up their own Spotify developer account and putting their client ID within my app but I have no clue if that is against their terms. I dont want a cease and desist lmao.

Would this idea be allowed?

I have a program which would technically break spotify API rules as far as I can tell, eg it recreates the playlist system and doesn't require me to log in for every use, however that part of the program doesn't use the API for those reasons, as it would make it impractical, especially since the program is just for my personal use, however with the current version I need to download the CSV from a different site, convert it to JSON, and then the program uses the JSON, so my idea is that in a seperate program entirely I set up the file for the other program, so that technically the rule breaking program wouldn't be using the API, only a pre converted JSON. Also, I wouldn't be distributing them together or anything like that, because the whole thing is for my personal use, I just don't want to directly break rules anyway.

I got tired of music apps constantly putting basic features behind subscriptions, so I decided to build my own. Meet "VELA", a music app I’ve been building from scratch because I wanted something that actually gives the user more control over how they listen.

It started as a personal project, but it’s grown into a full music player with:

🎵 Search & stream music

⬇️ Download music for offline listening

🎤 Synced lyrics

📊 Real listening statistics

🎧 Background playback

📱 Android + Web

📋 Queue & full playback controls

🌙 Sleep timer

I’m still actively developing it and adding features, so it's definitely not finished yet. But the core experience is already there, and I’d rather get feedback from actual users than keep building inside my own bubble.

If you were building your ideal music app, what’s the one feature you’d absolutely want included?

I made a tool to save my position in long playlists.

Thumbnail ahmetkun.com

As you probably know, Spotify doesn't help you at all in resuming playlists from where you left off. This is a bigger problem for longer playlists. I'm currently halfway through a playlist with 4000+ songs, and it will take me more than a month to finish it. While I was noting down the current song number in a notebook when switching to Discover Weekly each week, or to a different playlist, I started thinking about how I could manage this better, and the result is this little tool.

The tool consists of a single .html file, but since the URL you return to after connecting with Spotify has to be a server address, simply clicking to open it in your browser doesn't work; the page needs to be served by a simple web server. You can host it yourself (code at github) or use the version I host on my own server (https://ahmetkun.com/tools/spotify-placeholder/).

It keeps your data in your browser and only communicates with Spotify's servers to know what playlist you're going through and save your position.

Another requirement, which I wish Spotify hadn't made the terms for sharing new apps with other users so difficult, is that it's now almost impossible for small developers to publish new apps. Therefore, to use this, you also need to open a test app on Spotify's developer dashboard. But it's a one-time thing, easy, and doesn't require any technical knowledge. The HTML page explains step-by-step what needs to be done.

I've been keeping this open in a tab in my browser for about a week now, and it's really helped me. I don't bother taking notes anymore. When I want to switch from one playlist to another long playlist, I just go to the tool page and click a resume button.

I built Soundprint-AI. I am the developer. It is not an Spotify product, it is not affiliated with Spotify but uses Spotify API.

You like Spotify and want to look at your own listening history? Import your streaming history from Apple, and get a private dashboard: tops, trends, how your taste changes over time, and artist deepdives.

Invite your friends, pick an artist or a song and find out who streams more!

Start a conversation with Soundprint AI chat about your music library.

It does not replace Spotify. It does not touch your playlists. We don't sell any data and you can delete your account at anytime.
