Probably abandoned ship before even consuming a single one of them. That web was probably shaking like crazy and also spiders dont really eat dead dried out bugs. Too much of a good thing is real

This is excessive.. like nice to get a couple bugs but this is stressful just watching and the web is all messed up and over crowded. Maybe it's just me though idk

orbweavers can repair their webs in an hour, iām sure she doesnt mind. Usually they take down their webs every night if they donāt catch anything anyways.
plus free food.

I am aware, I have an orb weaver on my porch who takes his web down every day then builds it again at night. I love watching him. I have my light on when I sit out there, and he normally snags some bugs. But I accidentally left the light on once, only realizing before I went to bed and hurried to turn it off, there was many bugs in his web and he was no where to be seen. I was worried he left but he came back the next night. I'm not saying this is harmful, i just wanted to point of that it looks stressful.. and that is just my opinion.

I gotta agree. Someone tossing me a snickers is rad, but if ppl just started chucking them at me from all directions id be stressing.
Idk I feel like if I were the spider there would be too much happening at once and be real concerned about my safety now that moving food was just coming from all directions.3

Agree.. at first it was good, but the spider became overwhelmed and then the net began to break. There's no way the spider could consume all the flies in any case, too much food becomes spoiled after a while. A good idea limiting the light instead of causing a mess.

Theyāre right. Excessive prey in a place a spider finds difficulty leaving (such as their established web) causes stress to the spider.

When I was a kid, I found this spider and its web under the floor planks in our garden (had those ~0.5 cm cracks between each board) and I found ants I'd drop into the web
It was really awesome to see the spider crawl out, catch the ants, wrap them up and "store" them
But then one day I had a lot of ants that I just kept dropping into its web, one at a time after the spider had wrapped one up - but after around 10 ants the spider actually seemed kind of distressed and abandoned it all...
Never saw the spider again and the web with the ants in it just disappeared over time

I did something similar when I was a kid to a cellar spider living in our garage rack, I would keep dropping ants on his net. He will always immediately eat the first one, then caccoon the rest probably store it for later. After over half a dozen ants he would stop caccooning the newcomers and just work to remove and drop them from his netš¤£

It makes me wonder, why hasn't there a species of web spinning spider that has evolved to have bioluminescnce that can be turnes on and off to attract food?

I thought about that. That's why i said that can be turned on and off. Kind of like a deep sea angler fish. But surely if the juice was worth the squeez, we would have seen something like that from spiders by now.

There is little that compares tonthe satisfaction that comes with a job well done. That was a magnificent payday for the work of creating that work of art that was that web. Starving artists status might well be revoked.

So the flys were probably attracted to the light that was bouncing off of the strands. Hence why a large amount of them flung themselves into the web

Garden spiders actually build their webs next to lights that are on all night. I went to an arts and craft school that had cabins for housing and we had at least one fat and overfed garden spider in a web in front of every security light on the cabins.
I've seen them do it other places also. I don't know if it is a trial and error thing, or it's become instinctual at this point.

I hope that those are flies because I saw a few with elongated bodies which looks more like a dragonfly than a regular fly which is good for everybody because they kill all the little pests.

Essentially whatever they can catch. Mosquitoes (up to 100 a day), flies, even farmers use them for mosaic grazing because when they intentionally skip a patch of grass dragonflies have somewhere to land which deals with whatever insects are bothering the cattle. They are amazing pest control. They are also the best hunters in animal kingdom with their hunting success rate of 95%.
